I just acquired a mint January 1913 'National Geographic' magazine that has a 53 page article and 60+ photos of lighthouses and lightships prior to that date. I had to share this with you because I think this is a great find.

Be interesting to see what lights it talks about. Any that are no longer around, with pictures and info and such? Think this would be a great reference resource.

I'm not sure if they've put out any yearly updates, but about 3-4 years ago there was a CD Rom set put out by National Geographic.

It had the complete run of the publication up to about a year or two prior to the release date. It suppossedly included all items in the issues, including ads.

I just checked and It's been updated to 2000 and includes everything from 1888 to 2000- only $60.

Last March, Jerry and I went to Gray's Harbor, WA and thru prior arrangements, we were able to climb the tower. When I went to the Coast Guard station nearby to get the escort, I spoke to my contact about the lights where he had been stationed in previous years. He was at one time in another part of WA state and we chatted about the desolate island lighthouses, Tatoosh and Destruction. He then said that he had found an old National Geographic and after reading an account by a Destruction Lighthouse keeper's son, had done the same boat trip using the details he had read.

It would be interesting to know if the article you are telling us about, is the one he had read.
