Contined from this thread And you thought the Mark Twain Lighthouse was the only lighthouse in Missouri? Here's the 'Pla-Port Lighthouse' "Pla-Port Lighthouse is the only privately operated lighthouse on any inland lake in the United States. "Lake of the Ozarks - 130 miles long and a shoreline of 1372 miles covers an area of 65,000 acres." Read More About it on the Lighthouse Explorer Database

Here's an unused divided back card of Nix's Mate in Boston Harbor. Nix's Mate is not a lighthouse but it is a navigational aid. Here's the story. Nix's Mate was at one time a twelve acre island. Way back in the 1700's pirates were executed on the island and were hung up by chains as a warning to other seamen who might be considering a life of crime. Another legend is that of a captain who was murdered by his mate and buried on the island. Over time the island shrunk and what remained became a navigational hazard. In 1805 this 25' hollow pyramid of concrete and timber was placed on a two ton base of granite blocks to warn mariners. In June of 2001 it was reported that the Coast Guard was considering replacing Nix's Mate with a more modern structure. Wave action had caused it to deteriorate and tilt. Apparently there was much protest and in late August of that year news reports stated that Nix's Mate would instead be restored.

It was easier to find out old info on Nix's Mate than current. I thought I had heard some news on it fairly recently. Couldn't find anything through searching so just went to the Globe. Their most recent article was the end of August, 2001. Hopefully the plans for restoration are being/have been implemented. I forgot to mention that its colors are most recently black and white. When I went on a LH cruise out of Boston back in 10/99 we passed right by it and somehow I forgot to take a photo of it.

Sue I knew that I read something recently and I found it. It was in the February issue of Lighthouse Digest Keeper's Korner Tid-bits from the Tower By Timothy Harrison
Daymark will be restored
Coast Guard engineers from the Civil Engineering Office in Rhode Island are still working on the plans for the repair to restore Nix's Mate navigational aid in Boston Harbor. Repair was delayed because of other projects. However, it is expected that repairs and restoration will be done this soon (depending on weather) or this spring.

There we are! Thanks Mike. Depending on what I'm up to I sometimes give the magazine a somewhat cursory look through when it arrives, intending to get back to it later in more detail. But then sometimes before you know it the next one's arrived and they just start piling up! (Or maybe it's just that I forget what I've read???? )

I guess I should have said no band on the center of the tower.
"In 1900 Montauk received it's brown band midway up the white tower, and in 1903 the first-order lens was replaced with a 3.5 order bivalve "clamshell" lens. The band is still brown but may appear to be all those derivations of brown/red/maroon you noticed due to lighting or the artists interpretation. "

I agree, John. Looking at the older cards is fun and often gives you a whole different perspective than present day pictures (or even pesonal visits) do. One suggestion is that maybe we keep these threads with lots of pictures a little shorter than the usual 50 posts so those among us who enjoy dial-up connections see the pictures the same day we click on the thread.

The Light House & U.S. Signal Service, Atlantic City Copyright 1905 by J. Murray Jordan The message reads: We arrived here Saturday. How are you? M. E. Baird This shows the Absecon Lighthouse during it's orange and black band period. Well it would if it were in color! Here's the back: It was postmarked at both the sending and receiving location. Aug 20, 1906 at 6AM, Atlantic City and Aug 20, 1906 at ?PM, Norristown, Pa. The photo on this site is very like the postcard: http://www.virtualac.com/lighthouse/
