After going through a mild version of Floyd and being prepared to get slammed from the other side with Harvey, it got me to thinking of insurance.

Do many of you have your collection insured under a separate policy. I don't know if they'd be covered under homeowners. Also, those who do have a rider on them, do you know if I am able to use the HL certificate that is enclosed in the box as proof? I don't have receipts for many of the pieces and I was also lucky enough to buy many under the recommended retail. Also, what about pieces that have appreciated in value. I don't want to submit a receipt for a piece that shows $70 when it is now worth $120.

After last week, this is a serious concern.

Joanne, I have mine insured on a separate policy from the Collectibles Insurance Agency www.collectinsure.com . It's written through a company with a Best's rating A++, they don't require a schedule as my collection changes (I keep an updated inventory in my safe deposit box), and they insure them for fair market value. The price is resaonable IMHO and they are a pleasure to deal with. As with all insurance, read the exclusions carefully on the sample policy.

Hope this helps.

Lamar, thanks so much for the info. It might be exactly what I'm looking for. I called my insurance company and they said I needed to have each one appraised. I'd rather deal with a company that is knowledgable on collectibles.

Thanks again,

Joanne

Joanne, thanks for the question. I had already found out that homeowners did not cover HLs. But I did not know there was a company that insured collectables? Thanks Lamar, this is several times now I have obtained great info from you!!!

Just wondering about those friends in NC and other states that have suffered the flooding aftermath from the hurricanes this month.

How are you all doing?

Just wanted you to know someone is still thinking about you and hoping everything is working out okay.

Joanne,

I think what you need to do is to take a video and or a picture of each piece that you own, and catalogue each items current value and submit it to your insurance company. Then take a seperate rider policy out for cost of replacement on the pieces. It is also a wise idea to keep at least 2 sets of documents in a safe deposit box or a relatives home in case of fire. I am told that this will insure you will get full market value for your cherished pieces if a catastrophe ever strikes. It may cost a little more and take some time, but isn't it worth it?

I do have a list of all my collectibles now in both the safety deposit box and one at work. I have also put all my receipts and COA together.

I did contact the insurance company that LamarB uses and I was very pleased with what I found out about them. I now have my entire HL, Anchor Bay, Gone with the Wind plates and miscellaneous items insured with them for one third the cost my insurance company wanted for the rider. My boss has even taken out a policy on his Swarovski and Lladro pieces for half of what he is paying for his insurance rider.

As LamarB said, they really are reasonable.

I pray that nothing ever happens to my collection, but if it did, I know that I can replace them now.

Jim,
Thanks for the kind words. I am a secondary dealer in eastern N.C. We really came out real well at my home and the downtown business, Water came within one foot of coming inside at both places. I went through Kinston on wednesday and travelled one half mile in one hour and a half. I was lucky as the road (highway 70)
was closed again later. We really appreciate the prayers and kind words said by people like yourself.
Thanks Don www.donslighthouses.com
