You're absolutely right about the great cards, Dave. I've been involved in every postcard exchange we've had so far (at least I think I was...lol). I have received very few doubles and now have two photo albums full of lighthouse postcards.

My fellow members of postcard exchange #9 will be receiving a postcard that I never saw before. When I was at Watch Hill Light a couple of weeks back, I stopped in a small shop in downtown Westerly, Rhode Island. I was purposely looking for cards of Watch Hill and Stonington Lighthouses. I did find some of those but also managed to find 25 cards of another light with a view of that light that I never saw available on a postcard. I was delighted to find them and the other 35 cards I bought. The lady who sold them to be was also delighted to tell me all postcards were fifty cents each. What ever happen to the 25 cents each, five for a buck? LOL!

My cards for PC#9 will be in the mail tomorrow.

Bob

BobM, I was at the same store where I bought my Watch Hill pcs, and they tried the same thing on me. Luckily I pointed out that I took them from the 25 cent rack which I had to show them. They probably moved them after my sale. LOL

Could be, Bob, but there was only one revolving rack of postcards at the store with several different styles of cards offered for sale. There was a small hand-written sign, "All cards 50 cents each". I played the "Mickey the dunce" routine on the sales clerk and asked her how much the cards were and she politely stated, "50 cents each."

Help! I've lost the list for this exchange and I am leaving tomorrow afternoon for the long easter weekend and wanted to send the cards while I'm gone. Could someone please email me the list. Thanks!

Today's mail added another great postcard to the collection I've received from this exchange. This time it was Bryan's Currituck Beach Lighthouse card. This makes 2 in the Outer Banks Historic Collector Series. And a great history accompanies the card.

Thank you Bryan.

While away for the NJ Regional yesterday I received a great card from Judy Rath. This one is the Cape Otway Lightstation complete with an adorable koala and lighthouse stamp.
Sounds like you had a great trip Judy. Thanks for the awesome card!

I just received Derith's card of Tillamook Rock. That light has a very interesting history. I stayed on Cannon Beach several years ago and was able to see it in the distance.

Thanks also to Judy for her cards from Australia. I really appreciate the efforts that everyone puts in to acquiring their postcards.

I show 8 people that I haven't received cards from yet.

I received Derith's Tilamook Rock card while I was away for the weekend. It was nice to come home to such a great card. Thanks Derith!

Lorie, I have the same count. Good to know we came up with the same number. I'm looking forward to those last 8!

I really like the Tilamook Rock card and writeup. It must have been a very desolate and dangerous place to be stationed, especially in a violent storm. Thanks Derith.

I also received Toledo Harbour and today I received St. Charles.
I love the story that goes along with St. Charles. Only a lighthouse lover-wacko would put up with the bugs. Thanks.

Now I'm looking at the 'lighthouse postcard' from Dave and I think it's a faux lighthouse.

The description says "This landmark is located in Cape Charles..."

It looks like a water tower to me. They've added a pseudo-lanter room on the top and painted on some windows.

The only way up to this lantern room seems to be an exterior vertical ladder. The center pole isn't big enough to contain a spiral staircase.

Can anyone else confirm this?

I'm happy to have the card, don't mistake that.

Thanks for that post John. I keep going back to the postcard and thinking the same thing. Especially when I compare it to Dave's photos. It's nice to know that I'm not going nuts today...maybe tomorrow.

OK, John, you caught me. As we left our Cape Charles adventure, I knew I had to use the story as background for a post card exchange. The only card I could find that was even close was the one I did get. I don't think anyone else has tried to "slip" a faux lighthouse into the exchange, except for Harbour Town.

To me the giveaways were the shorter than it should be lantern room (had a 1st order light so it was tall); the current tower has an all black watch room and lantern room level; the legs on my card are too vertical. For the past several months I have searched off and on for anything that would give me more insight into what this really was, but have had no luck.

The lantern room and watch room on Cape Charles intrigue me with their design. I really wish I had climbed all the way, but you know the story about that.

Hey, I included a second card that was very appropriate to HL.....

Dave

I too scratched my head on this one, John. I could not believe a newly proclaimed Saint would portray this spoof. So I gave him the benefit of the doubt? As for Harbour Town, it was duly id'ed as a 'faux lighthouse' in the accompanying documentation. I even noted they didn't even turn on a light bulb in the lantern room at night, which was a real disappointment for me.
I'm shocked and dismayed to be associated with this travesty!(TIC)

I also recieved Laurie's Drum Point card today. Several times during the year they let people "camp" overnight in the light. When Heather and I were there a couple years ago, we were there the morning after they let a group camp; the bad part is that we had camped the night before not too far away!

I also recieved Laurie's card today. Thanks for the info sheet too. I am having trouble getting the card I wanted to send and I am running out of time. I picked one up at a state park but they don't mail items from their store. I called the name of the distributor on the card but they haven't returned my calls. Any suggestions?

To all participants in the PE #8

This is the first exchange in which I have participated. It has been exciting and a lot of fun to receive all the wonderful lighthouse postcards from so many far away places. I have received 19 post cards so far, (plus one from myself for a total of 20) Thanks to all of you. This has been a wonderful experience.

Wheww...I beat the deadline. I sent out my cards (well technically the envelopes containing the cards) this morning. I haven't had alot of time lately to post commments but all the cards, fact sheets and stories about lighthouse adventures have been wonderful. I love the cards, but it is the extra stuff included that make the "in envelope" exchanges a little more special. Thanks to everyone!

So, Doc John is still around! Cancel the search party. Been so long since we have seen anything from John I figured he had taken a teaching position at an island medical school where they had no internet access.

Come by more often, John (tic). Will we be seeing a recipie with this card?

I'm still around Dave...this is just a very busy time of year for me getting grades in, student meetings, academic committees, then the social calender of graduation dinners, ceremonies, etc. Its worse than Christmas!

Sorry...no recipes this go around (BTW did you try the pecan pie?) but I did include 2 trivia questions to get everyone's brain engaged. Answers will be posted here later in the week.

Received John's card yesterday and Denis' card today. Seems as if we are on a southern belle kick this go 'round!

With Dale & Tom and Joyce's cards in the mail, it looks like this will be a perfect sweep for the exchange. And, everyone got them in the mail under the deadline! Good job all. There have been some great cards and write ups this time around. And I still have a couple cards to get, so it will get even better!

I also received Tom & Joyce's card yesterday. Haven't been to that light yet. Hope to make it out that way in the near future. Thanks!

I recieved Dale's card today.

Nice letter and extras.

One question- is it just a coincidence that the stamp was the NJ stamp from those new state stamps?

Dennis

Interesting!? I live in Oregon, Wisconsin and the stamp on my envelope from Dale says Oregon.

I started out putting the state stamp on the card that went to that state. Once a stamp was used I had to ramdomly put stamps on the cards that were left. most of you got your state's stamp, except for the lighthouse ones. I kept those for my lighthouse stamp collection.

Thanks, Dale, for the Old Point Loma Lighthouse pc, the interesting historical information, and the nice book mark.

Tom and Joyce
That was quite a package you sent!
Thanks for the post card of the Matagorda Island Lighthouse, the History of the Lighthouse, the Visitor's Guide to the Texas Gulf Coast Lighthouses, and the Ruler. Gracias!!!!
I do have a question, though. The map shows Bolivar Point Lighthouse at having white and black stripes. When I saw it in 1998 it was black. The HL LE edition is black. Has it been repainted? (Just thought I'd ask.)

Thanks again, JoanieO

Tom & Joyce,

I got your package on Saturday. just opened my mail.

Very nice. thanks for all the goodies.

I'm going to ask you the same question I asked Dale- did you try and match the stamp to the state of the person you sent it to?

I got another NJ stamp on your envelope (along with the stamp for the second ounce).

Just curious.

Dennis

While I was away in Albany this weekend I received Tom and Joyce's great package and the card and book mark from Dale. Thanks a bunch guys. It was nice to come home to a bunch of mail, especially on one's birthday.

I was out of town for a few days in Chicago and came back to some more great cards..a beautiful Morris Island card (looked very expensive Dennis!!!), an old Point Loma from Dale (another favorite I've visited two times) and Tom & Joyce's Matagorda ( a very interesting looking light...like a cross between Bolivar's tower and Biloxi's lantern room).

Here are trivia answers as promised:
1. Cape Canaveral (sister light to Hunting Island)
2. Forest Gump (movie largely filmed around Beaufort SC including Vietnam scenes filmed at Hunting Island)

Congrats to "trivia master" Dennis who emailed me a few days ago with the correct answers to both questions.
