Spent an interesting weekend in Montauk. Got some good snow pictures of the LH and found some post cards. I actually bought 30+ different new photo postcards of Montauk Lighthouse that I didn't already have! (And I have alot.) The best buy was a St Patrick's Day Shirt with the Montauk LH on it. Images to follow. Bob

There we go! Thanks Bob! Any idea of the age of that card?

Has to be before 1900 Sue. "Montauk was originally all white. In 1900 Montauk received it's brown band midway up the white tower..." Bob

I knew I had seen a postcard of Montauk without the stripe and I think this is it! Just look at all the land in front of the lighthouse! It is amazing how much erosion can occur in 100 years.

I know about the 1900 date Bob but Mike didn't give us any info on pre 1900 postcards. Maybe the photo was pre 1900 but the card wasn't produced until later?

Aha, I got you Sue. I don't have the postcard, I gleaned the image off of ebay about three years ago. It went for at least $150, and I don't have an image of the back, John. I wasn't as pc literate as I am now(lol). I'm learnin'. I never have seen another. There is a photo with the white/no brown band on the tower at the Montauk Lighthouse, and if I look hard enough I can probably find an image of that one. Check out the second building in the back on the cliff. Bob
ps Thanks for the info Mike!

Yes that cliff is certainly much smaller now!
The second building in the back on the cliff - don't think that's one that's there now? Unless it slid or was relocated. Probably it fell over the cliff? Was it a FSB?
Thanks for that site Mike. Interesting about the Columbian Exposition.

Keeping with the discussion on Montauk Point Lighthouse at the turn of the Century, I recently acquired these two postcards. The White tower one is the best I've seen yet. And I'm just floored by the Inn postcard. Looks like a lot of fun research ahead. Bob Montauk White Tower Montauk White Tower Back"No. 8741. The Metropolitan News Co., Boston. Didn't I see those postcards on Ebay being sold as a lot? Within the past week...
Marblehead, Mass. Lighthouse, you will always have a very special place in our hearts. ....We've made the journey as far south as New Jersey, as far north as Canada. Over 100 lighthouses visited.... and so many more to go.

I saw that lot on ebay too, Roxie. They were older cards too but not this old or these two. These were on ebay but separate auctions. I've never seen these two cards offered before in my 5 years of collecting. Bob
