Donna's Summary:
Checked my list today, received seven so far this exchange. Bob's Montauk Pt. which we still have to visit! Ponce from Bill, Sea Girt from Pharologist. Washington state group from Darlene again all we hope to see someday. Plymouth light from Bob, again a future visit. Two from Great Lakes area, White River from Todd, Holland from the Meyers. The Holland arrived the day after Valentine's Day, when we had treated ourselves to the LE Holland courtesy of Randy Kremer.

Got a fantastic card from Mike & Patty today! (well, at least it was before the USPS made significant modifications to it.) Great pic of Point Montara with lightening in background.

Yes I got Mike and Patty's card. Nice picture of Pigeon Point. And, yes the USPS put their stamp of "disapproval" on mine also.

I received North Head Lighthouse from Mike & Patty today. It arrived in perfect condition.

I have my postcards ready to mail. They should go out this weekend.

Sorry Dave & Sheryl -- I guess the larger postcards got hammered during mailing. We sent out different ones to everyone from our trip.

Patty

p.s. I still owe a couple of people a postcard

Hey Patty! Do the larger sized post cards require additional postage, or does 20 cents work for them? I'm talking large as 5 X 7" versus the standard 4 X 6".

I've got some great Pigeon Points and Point Arenas, but they are the larger size.

Rich,

You have to put 1st class postage ($.34) on the larger ones. As I guess we found out, they don't make it through the post office as well as the smaller ones. That's what the larger ones were...Montara, Pigeon Point, & Pt. Arena.

All my post cards were put in the mail today. My son attends college at William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA. I had to enlist his help in locating post cards for me. I hope some of you don't already have the same post cards. Anyway, we tried our best.

Seems like some of the steam is running out of the post card exchange, not the same enthusiasm as the first ones but there are still some great cards coming through.in the last few days I have rec'd 4 new cards as follows, one from Sheryl of chesapeake with 3 screwpile lights, one from Derith of heceta head looks like sunset with the light just coming on,one from Suzanne Murphy of bailey's harbor lights with some unusual lights and one from Mike&Patty a very unusual hillside shot of alcatraz with many flowers in bloom, very distinctive. Thanks to you all.Bill O'Brien oseabee

Bill,
Running out of steam has nothing to do with the slowness. Many of us indicated that we had to "reload" with cards and it would be several months before we were able to. Here is a copy of what I posted in the "sign-up" thread:
Quote:
OK, I'll start it. I had fun with the first. I liked getting everyone's notes! Just don't expect me to be real early getting cards out, 'cause I gotta get somewhere to reload.

Not all of us live in a state with lots of lighthouses where finding LH postcards presents no significant problem. Yes, I could shop on the net, but I choose not to. I intend to wait until my first lighthousing trip of the year to acquire the 50 or so new cards I need for the 2 exchanges.

The exchanges are set up to cover 6 months; we have just passed the 2 month mark. As with so many things, the anticipation of what is yet to come comes into play here. I would rather get a card or 2 a week for 6 months than 25 cards in a 2 to 3 week period.

IMNSHO,

Dave

I agree with Dave. The first exchange was a lot of fun getting mail each day, but now we get to "savor" each and every card. I'm enjoying this one as much as the first.

I kinda like the "dribs & drabs" approach. Never knowing just what trip to the mailbox (and it is a trip by car down the mountain!) will bring more LH cards is stimulating and I get to enjoy each card a little more than when a "pile" shows up. I'll be making another lighthousing trip this summer in which I plan to "stock up" on cards for exchanges as well as trading with other LHouser's. The last trip, I planned ahead and bought a ton of cards for just that reason.

The latest cards we received were from Mike and Patty with Point Bonita on it and Suzanne Murphy with the Bailey Harbor WI lights on it. They have a little wear from the postal service but not bad. They are great cards. It is fun going to the mailbox to see if another card will arrive today or not. They are something to look forward to now that we are in what we call the mud season in Michigan.

I agree that the timing is good over this two month period. I'm letting this runs its course until JUNE 30thcorrected, and start a new Postcard 5 - July 1corrected? 25 pcs over 4 months is a nice way to savor the the mail.

Yes, I like not knowing when one should be arriving. It always makes me smile when I find one in the mail. Got Suzanne's last Friday.. Thanks, very nice. Mine have now all been sent, if someone didn't get one let me know.

Suzanne I love the Baileys Harbor postcard. Some of these are new to me as I am not that familiar with Wisconsin lights. I like the Upper Range Light. Are any groups going to restore the Old Baileys Harbor?

Old Baileys Harbor lantern room is an example of the rare "bird cage" design. It is one of only three surviving on the Great Lakes today. Bird Cage lantern rooms were used prior to the use of Fresnel lenses. An Argand lamp with a reflector was the usual source for bird cage style lantern rooms.

Sadly, Old Baileys Harbor is privately owned and restoration plans are unknown. So far not much has been done. The house and tower are in excellent condition, but the upper portion of the light has deteriorated and is not in very good shape.

The Upper and Lower Range lights are in a beautiful nature preserve with numerous varieties of wildflowers and birds to see. In 1936 there were plans to tear down the range lights and put in a trailer park. Luckily these plans were overruled.

My mistake on an earlier post. It's been brought to my attention that the guide lines for the postcard exchange was established at 6 months. MY BAD! (can't believe I used that phrase. Anyway please recind my previous deadline and change it to June 30th.

I received a beautiful postcard of Pigeon Point from Rich today. It arrived in great shape. One of my friends just asked me if I knew which lighthouse was on the TV show Providence. Now I can show her the postcard. Thanks!

I just got that one also, unfortunately it was chewed up a bit in the process.

At least the portion with the lighthouse was unscathed.

Sorry Rich--I still think Santa Cruz still looks like a library!!

Received Dave's Michigan LH today, anybody have a count on where we are or maybe a summary of who sent what? I really enjoy the pcs arriving at random. It's like a minilighthousing trip with the sender as the tour director.

I have been out of town and came home to 2 more geat cards from Dave and Donna. It sure is nice to see the postcards mixed in with the pile of bills!

In answer to Bob's question...I now have received postcards from 15 on this list. If I count my cards sent out, I would be at 16.

I apologize for not acknowledging the postcards I've received from this group but a crashed computer for two weeks and a family illness has my mind elsewhere.

The postcards keep trickling in and I thank you for them. Each and every one of them goes into my album.

Thanks again!

Our latest edition to the postcards we received were from Derith and Donna. Derith's card had Trinidad Lighthouse on it. Donna's had Sheffield Island on it. It is a real photograph that she made into a postcard. That is a neat trick Donna. They both came through the postal system in great shape. With these two cards our count is up to 14.

All of the lighthouse postcards are fun to receive however, today I received one from Donna that took me back a bit. Maybe she sent the same one to everyone but I was so taken by Sheffield Island Lighthouse, Norwalk, CT. Many years ago I was born in Norwalk, CT. About 5yrs ago Terry & I went back to Norwalk to try to find my place of birth. The old house I was born in was still standing. (hard to blieve) We really wanted to go visit Sheffield Light but there were no boats to take us there during the week because it was closed. When Harbour Lights asks us what light we would like to see made I always say, Sheffield. Thank you so much Donna for the picture, it could not have made me happier.

Hi Ruthie & everyone,

Glad my Sheffield Island photos made it thru the postal system. Got the idea from Derith's Yerba Buena photo cards from the last exchange. In fact, Derith was kind enough to mail me the backings which I couldn't find here in my area. I sent them out in batches so they will be still arriving at some homes. Wanted to use a local (30 minutes away) but not too common/famous lighthouse. Ruthie, it really is a beautiful lighthouse. I'd love to see the comparison of HL doing it now as compared to Great Captain's of the earlier
generation of HLs.

Now my question, received a card from Dave yesterday of a Michigan lighthouse that is brand new to me: Port Austin, what fun! But, which Dave is it? He mentions now being able to start the second round. I check all my cards off on my lists as I receive them. Could this be Dave D. from our very first postcard list exchange?? I already show cards from Dave H. Inquiring minds want to know as Dave D. from CA would be the final card for the 1st list.

The fourth exchange should be easier as the weather gets nicer & we travel to some lighthouse areas to pick up some new cards.

The cards now showing up from "Dave" are most likely from Dave Dutcher to members of the original PC exchange. Sounds like he suffered from the same problem many of us are: "lackapostcardus". Always glad to get a card, though.

I am up to having received 15 cards.

Dave

Thanks, Dave for the update. I was pretty sure the card was from Dave Dutcher as it had a CA postmark. Now my first postcard list is complete as is the second. Almost amazing that none were lost in transit! I, like you, are glad to get them in any time frame. I can understand Dave D's desire to send cards that represent where he grew up. Now that is a bit hard when you reside in CA & need postcards from MI.

Now I've got to get groups 1,2&3 out of the shoe box into some kind of album! Kind of like my photos.

Bill,

I thought you might like to see the Lighthouse in it's original location.

Before Hollywood got into the act and moved it about 3000 miles.

Glad to know they are getting to their destinations.

We received the Point Cabrillo lighthouse in the mail yesterday. What is really amazing about it aside from the fact that it came through in great shape, is the fact it didn't have any postage on it.

Thanks Dennis for the great card.

Glad it came in great shape.

I too am surprised. I could swear I put postage on it. I'm a little surprised that the USPS did not make sure they got their due.

Glad you liked it. It's a nice place to visit, and they are doing a great job of restoring it.

Well, folks, I finally got my cards into the mail tonite (but after the day's last pick-up). Hopefully you will see them by the end of the week. Same light for everyone. There is a slight variation in the cards - I sent some of the older folks a card with a view they might have seen in their younger years.

The next group starts after July 1.

the ones coming now are the tailend of the last group.

Some of us (meaning me) work slower than others. I've had my cards for quite some time- just never seemed to have the time to write the notes.

Dennis, believe it or not, there are still 6 people slower than we are! Don't start with the new ones for a little bit.

It's looking like we are going for the longest thread on record here!

Dennis, got you card today here in Murphy. Looking good. I will be up in NJ (Keyport/Aberdeen area ) in mid July and will probably revisit Navesink and Sandy Hook, and pick up some more cards.

George,

I will not be down at Sandy Hook at that time, but I should be in the area of Trenton if your driving thru.

You could always check out that "faux" lighthouse just south of here in Burlington.

I'll be at Sandy Hook on 7-8 Sunday. i'll be giving tours and my wife, Esther , will be a greeter.

I recently received Point Judith from Dennis Whelan. Today I received Fort Point from Dave. Thanks to both of you.

Dave - My son was in San Francisco during spring break this year and he could not find the lighthouse at Fort Point. I will be sure to show him this postcard! He did find Alcatraz and took photos for me.

Suzanne,

He should have gone to the big bridge and looked down.

There's a nice rest stop with anoverlook just before getting on the Golden Gate Bridge.

You can park there and go look out into the Bay and you can look down onto the fort and see the lighthouse sitting on top of it.

It's a neat place to stop. And , yes, there is a gift shop but the lighthouse souveniers are not there.

The Fort is interesting also. you get there by taking the exit just before the park and wind your way down to the water. You get a good view of the inside of the old batteries, the quarters, etc. they have some nice exhibits on the history of the fort. It's a twin of Fort Sumter in Charleston, SC

You can climb up to the top and get right next to the shell of the Lighthouse. you are literally beneath one of the towers for the Golden Gate.

If you look out to the left of the bridge you can just barely see the remains of Mile Rock Lighthouse.

Alcatraz is a neat tour. Of course it was a triple header for me- my vacation, avocation(Lighthouses) and at the time my vocation (I was a Prison Guard at the time-now retired).

The same company that built the locking system at Alcatraz built the locking system used in part of the Prison I worked in so it looked very familiar.

That is very interesting Dennis. He walked both ways across the Golden Gate Bridge, but he must not have looked down at the fort!

Suzanne,

I don't know if you got the same Fort point card I got, but if you got what appeared to be an aerial view it wasn't.

It was probably taken from the overlook I spoke of.

And Dave I got your card and the previous post should answer you question.

That's my second favorite photo of Fort Point.

I got one (and since have seen a postcard with the same view) of the Lighthouse framed in one of the archways of the stairwells.

I sent mine out Saturday. Nothing like waiting till that last minute! Everyone gets the same card of St. Augustine. It was taken from a plane and gives a nice view of the surrounding area. I bought them at the fort in St. Augustine. The lady in the gift shop thought it was a little strange for someone to buy 25 of the same postcard!

Bill, that of course was our first stop that day! We have been there many times before. I like the new house they built! It gives alot more room for their gift shop. We bought a brick about 10 years ago when they rebuilt the wall around the lighthouse. It's always good to go back and see our names again in the wall!
