Steve -

The CIB guides normally cover a wide range of products and come out twice a year. The prices they gave USED TO BE based on actual sales by recognized secondary market dealers.

Back in 1997-98, I was one of those who sent in price reports that helped set the 'prices'. However, what sets the market today?

It sure isn't secondary market dealers, is it? I don't have any up-to-date knowledge on how CIB sets the 'values' today.

It's probably worth the $10 investment today to at least have someone report to us on what they say.

When I was inventorying for the purpose of getting that insurance... no, not THAT insurance, but the collector's insurance...which I still haven't purchased, I purchased the right to view on-line, receive e-mails, etc., and get a Sears catalog-sized book with alot of other companies in there, among them being Harbour Lights. But revisiting for the first time in quite some time last night, I noticed their availability on site for this guide, which all things considered, probably woulda been my best bet since I don't have THAT many collectibles worth insuring that aren't HL's, and didn't find some of the ones that weren't HL's in there. That being said, especially with the later retired editions and issues, I don't know how up-to-date they are. If interested, you/someone can throw some older versions at me, or I can try and get time and (with my semi-slow typing pace) post at random what they said for early this year what the going rates/ranges were.

The 19th edition of the CIB Collectibles Market Guide & Price Index sold for $24.95 directly from the company. It was the book that the seller used for determining the value of the set of the original 17 with the flag number 103. He felt the prices in the book were too high based on what he had paid for the 17 lighthouses, so he lowered the price to the offer I made to him. I guess I was just in the right place at the right time.

You found a deal in a lifetime.
I haven’t been able to open your pictures that you posted.
You now can post them on this forum.

Once in a while a deal comes along where you can buy a whole set and get them at bargain price. I pretty much put together most of my Canada collection from one seller as one package. Still got a few to complete that set. The Malaysians with rods are more difficult to complete. Many of them are more scarce then a Canadians.

Finding a Matching set of the first 17, I know that will never happen. You, the collector that has the 105 and the Younger family may be the only collectors that will ever have that blessing.

Congratulations again on a great find.

Well nobody really "asked", but here's an at-random sampling of a few of the lights and their published worth from the CIB' Collectible's Market Guide & Price Index (19th ed.):

#236 Old Mission Point $70

#153 Round Island $105 - $221

#148 New Canal $90 - $105

#172 Chatham $100 - $171

#214 Bass Harbor $75 - $130

@219 Gay Head $75 - $219

The one that I inquired about would be just on Harbour Lights and not all these other companies and their products, plus may be a little bit more adjusted (up or down) perhaps!?!

Compare the CIB value with reality. EBAY

#236 Old Mission Point $70 - EBAY PRICE N/A

#153 Round Island $105 - $221- EBAY PRICE $68

#148 New Canal $90 - $105 - EBAY PRICE $20

#172 Chatham $100 - $171 - EBAY PRICE $25

#214 Bass Harbor $75 - $130 - EBAY PRICE $16

@219 Gay Head $75 - $219 - EBAY PRICE $20

Before Ebay and while the internet was still young, the CIB was very valuable in locating secondary dealers and Harbour Lights specialist like John Childester and Mike Richardson. These were the two pioneers that started using the Websites for selling Harbour Lights. Harbour Light Specialist was the term that CIB gave to the secondary dealers that was well educated in the collecting of Harbour Lights. I always like the title “Harbour Light Specialist” and someday I hope to earn that title.

I have to 100% agree with Daniel's numbers rather then the CIB figures. I have always found them HIGH, HIGH, HIGH. Their numbers reflect an idealistic world and not the real world of the secondary market. That is why I have been using the publication put out by Krause entitled Price Guide to Contemorary Collectible and Limited Editions for the past 5 years. The numbers in this publication are close to Daniel's numbers. The secondary market prices are compiled by Matt Rothman and only the retired pieces are listed. The price is $22.00 less shipping. It is nothing like the "Green Book" or publications strickly Harbour Lights but it is the best I've seen on the market today. I found it in the public library 5 years ago and bought it immediatly from Krause(1-888-457-2873). The current issue is the 9th Edition.

I never got a call back from CIB. If they still rely on 'secondary market specialists/dealers" to report on prices, you can see that there is conflict of interest here.

If you are a dealer, you want prices to be higher. You simply report items sold for more than they might have.

Not ethical, of course, but no check or verification from buyers, just sellers.

I'm not saying this happens. Just that it COULD happen. And how many secondary market dealers are there out there anymore?

I'll tell what the real benefit to the book is, Is after your house burns down or house is broken into, you pull out this book and show the insurance adjuster just how much your collection is "really" worth.

On an added note, don't leave the book near your collection.... If a burglar breaks in and see's the book and the "real" value of your collection they will surely steal your best pieces if not all of them.

Keep the book at a location outside your house - no not in the backyard, at your office.

Daniel, to us, you ARE a "Harbour Light Specialist". And who should know better than the community of Harbour Lights collectors?!

Daniel,

I must agree with Grace. And I could not have said it any better.

I realize it has been some time since I promised to post some pictures of the original 17, HL102 and HL103 to be exact. My wife took the pictures, but we have never been able to shrink the pictures down to be able to post them. If anyone can help, I wouldlove to post those two and any others people would like to see. We have already tried everything people have pointed out to us, but nothing has worked. I have sent the pictures to a friend back east, so I know they can be sent by email. Please advise, if interested.

Scott,

Like you, I have tried many times to post pictures, but have been unable to do so without Dave's kind assistance. I'm not stupid, and I'm sure that you are not. But there must be a simple and direct way to accomplish our objective without spending hours in a frustrating endeavor.

There are many others, like myself, who have just given up.

Dave-

I want to formally thank you for your offer of resizing my pictures of HL102 and HL103 and posting them on the Forum. It has taken me awhile to get back to you, but the pictures will be sent in the next couple of days, as I stated in my email to you directly. I hope the pictures don't come out as grainy and blurry as when my wife tried to resize them. Good luck. I hope the members enjoy the pictures as much as I do.

Scott
