Inquiring minds want to know why one of the three Nauset Beachs currently available on e-bay has 30 bids up to $391?? What am I missing with this auction action? The other two are $220 range which is the going rate. I already have my Nauset but I always watch it as it is one of my favorite lighthouses. The last few months it has gone $175-$225, with one low of the $130s. Curious Donna

There's no telling DeDo.
Could the high one have a 2-digit number? That MIGHT explain it.
But there are people who are NOT following secondary prices as closely as you and don't know what the going rate is and just "HAVE" to have it.

John, the # is 3947. I wonder too, if the bidders sometimes bid so high and then renege on the deal when they have second thougts?

Donna, Also, never underestimate the power of a good auction and the testosterone that gets released in the heat of battle. Although I haven't looked at this auction, the wording always plays a part in the bids.

You have to admit that the variations of bids make eBay interesting. Patience is ever so important on eBay. Bid low and keep your fingers crossed, unless you have deep pockets. Bob

This piece had a ridiculously low starting bid of $5. http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=287276903 It now has 30 bidders. I think that if an auction starts getting a lot of bids early (as a $5.00 entry on Nauset is sure to do), some get caught up in the bidding (even more so than usual) and in the process get so used to the idea of owning the piece that they throw reason out the window and assume a "win this auction at any cost" posture. Just another useless theory from your Cruise Director. ------------------ -ArtOops, wrong link. To fix it,

Looks like Nauset went for over $400. It wasn't a low# either. Just a regular Nauset in mint condition. How do you figure that out? Bob

Same bidder on this one paid over $700 for a New Point Loma that didn't make it past $350 the last time it was on ebay w/o making the reserve.

We had better invite him to the next reunion and tell him it's appropriate for him to host a large party for the HL Forum people. Bob

$440 for the Saint is not out of line, but I'm watching this one with great interest. We might just see our first 4-digit (price) St. Auggie if the current high bidder's nemeses comes out to play.

I got curious after seeing this bidder go very heavy on some HL's and checked. They have WON 482 auctions since Feb 19th! 11 of these were Harbour Lights (including Ponce, Tybee, Big Bay, Rose Is set, Key West, 2 Nausets, Pennsacola and a Great Captain (at $265!!). Total = $3582 in only 12 days!!. I have no idea what the other 470+ auctions have cost them, but they sure do have an abundance of cash to throw around.( That assumes that the sellers will all get paid.)

The bidder so far has a very good feedback rating. Comments include "fast pay" and "great to do business with", etc. These comments came from 188 unique users. Apparently this person has deep pockets and payment has not been a problem so far.
I wonder what Bill Gates is doing these days since he relinquished control over Microsoft? LOL

That is one the things that I don't like about ebay. Other people can check on what you have been bidding on as well as selling. Almost like an invasion of privacy.

eBay is a public auction that depends upon one user's ability to check the history of another user. Without the ability to check on a buyer or seller, the system would suffer a crisis in credibility. The price to play includes a minimal disclosure of information including e-mail address and public feedback ratings. With appropriate forethought, a user can set up an e-mail address and an eBay user I.D. that preserves anonymity. The only thing made public is the record of the eBay user I.D., and even this cannot be easily linked to any individual who wishes to keep his identity confidential. I don't consider this an invasion of privacy. There is far more sensitive information publicly available about real individuals (not just contextual user I.D.s) than this from other sources.
