I have been having a bit of fun watching the Fresnel frenzy on eBay. I decided to do a spread sheet (with the help of Art - thanks Art!) listing the various different bids, what they are selling for, etc. To view the spread sheet, click on the link below. Have fun!

I still can't believe the "feeding frenzy" the Fresnel Lens has caused. I must admit it always nice to have a little excitement in the HL Collector's world.

I wonder how the market price will be six months from now when the chance of finding one of these pieces will be slim. Any estimates on secondary market prices six months from now?

Imagine when these sellers/buyers find out about the color variation!

Hey Sue, ...If every collector tried to get both hues, the prices would probably skyrocket, if it hasn't already. I'll be happy to just get my one and only.

Thursday, 16 NOV 00: There were two Fresnels sold today on eBay, the first bringing the lowest price yet of $165.00. However, the second and final Fresnel of the day captured a price of $190.50. It would appear that there are still those out there who want a Fresnel, and are willing to pay twice it's retail value. To view the latest spread sheet, go to the top post and click on the link.

I'm still waiting for mine. I imagine there are quite a few people out there searching for available ones at various dealers so they can resell it to make a few bucks to add to the collection fund. Time will tell if any of these great pieces will remain after the final shipment goes out at the end of the month.

thanks Torchbearer for making this chart- it's very interesting to watch. I looks as though the prices have dropped slightly- maybe the rumor of that another shippment is still to come, effected the prices??

Friday, 17 NOV 00/Saturday, 18 NOV 00: Nothing exciting regarding big auctions for the Fresnel on eBay the last two days. Friday's one and only piece sold for $177.50. Saturday had three different auctions. One Fresnel was just $2.00 off from the lowest sale yet at $167.00, and another sold for $171.50. The lens that was being closely watched was the "clear variation." It was pictured in another forum and sold by a formite at $174.50. Nothing exciting there! At this point in time, getting twice retail seems to be the norm. Will it continue when the next shipment hits the streets at the end of this month? Only time will tell. Does anyone know how many have been shipped and how many are yet to come? I got mine, then we went looking for one for my friend. We found two today in shops at retail. Too late, you guys, they're gone!

Dixie... the highest number that has been reported on the forums so far is 2024, however, I'm sure there are higher edition numbers out there. Last I heard, the remainder of the 4000 will ship the end of this month. The highest known edition number on eBay so far is 1816.

It appears to me as if there is one person who is trying to buy up all the Fresnel Lens' on ebay. That one name appears as high bidder on the majority of the auctions.

If history is any indication if there is one person who is trying to corner the market, they will be severely disapointed very shortly.

Once the rest of the pieces ship the bottom will fall out of the Fresnel Market. Yes, they will still be a wanted item, but not at the inflated prices that are being paid now.

I think a fine example of this is American shoal. It was very much in demand sold and for a premium when it was first issued. now you can get one below retail on eBay or walk into 5 out of 10 stores and find one on the shelf.

The Panama Set is another fine example. They too can be found still in stores and for below list on eBay.

I hope the speculator is not too disapointed in the outcome.Well, actually I do. Anyone that is attempting to take advantage of others , needs to have a commuppence once in awhile.

While it appears like one person is the high bidder on several Fresnel Lenses on eBay, the bidder hasn't won one yet and all current bids are still under the reserve bids set in the different auctions at the time that I write this post. That means that bidder hasn't bought any Fresnel at this time. It looks like the bidder is just shopping around to find the lowest reserve auction on a Fresnel.

Currently it appears that there are two bidders for the nine lenses for sale on e-bay. One individual is the highest bidder of five and over the reserve on all while the other is high bidder on four and under the reserve on all. I did find that one individual did win the bid on three of the twenty that have closed on e-bay so far. Eighteen of those twenty that have closed met the reserve.

Like I said, "at the time I was writing the post." It looks like the one person put in 4 bids on different auctions while I was posting. If you go look at completed auctions under their profile, they have lost 6 times so far in trying for one. Maybe they are hoping for just one win, in this group of bids.

They just won one and still leading bidder in 4 others right now. If they win them all it will run them around $1000 as the bids stand now.

to update that the one bidder finally winning a Fresnel....

I'm not sure but do you think if i ask nicely one of these guys would send me one of the many lens they are buying for Christmas! I guess since the stock market is down some folks need to try and pick up a buck here and there as best they can. Good Luck!!!! At these prices i am not sure i would agree with thier "investment strategies"

To this date, 20 Fresnels have sold on eBay, and another 10 still for sale. Though the earlier eBay sales of the Fresnel brought in the highest bids (above $200.00), it appears that interest is still very strong. A piece sold this evening (Monday) for $178.50. Many on eBay, which are still for sale, have some very good bids on them thus far. There are a few with closing dates of Nov 24th and 25th with bids in the $150s. One closes on the 22nd with a high bid of $177.50 so far. To view the latest spread sheet, click on the link below.

Wednesday, 22 NOV 00: As I watched a Fresnel sell for $153.01 Tuesday evening, I thought to myself, "Is this the beginning of the end?" But then, this evening a lens sold for $190.50 - it would appear the frenzy is still on. There is no pattern, nor logic in the purchasing practice here. Edition numbers obviously are not a factor as the low price brought in yesterday was number 594, and the high this evening 1473. Earlier in the frenzy, number 184 sold for $187.50, and the very next lens, number 1708, brought in the highest price so far at $292.50.

I still predict prices will fall sometime in early December. The second shipment of Fresnels should go out within the next week completing the total of 4000. However, the second shipment will not be as large considering the first shipment was well over 2000. Any predictions out there? For the latest spread sheet, click on the link below.

I spoke to a 'usually reliable source' today who said the balance of about 2,000 Fresnels will dribble in in small quantities between now and Christmas. One batch of about 500 should arrive any day - and this is expected to be the largest of the dribbles. So scarcity will continue and perhaps the secondary prices will escalate as a result.

Obviously there is speculation rampant here.

As of this time, the lowest auction for a Fresnel on eBay remains at $130.00. However, an interesting trend seems to be taking place. There have been eight no sales due to the reserve price not being met in the last week. It would seem that there has been high anticipation by the sellers. Fresnel sales have dropped considerably during the last few days. As of this posting, there are only 4 left for auction. A typical day in November had approximately 10 - 12 for sale. As predicted by a few, the value of the Fresnel has also dropped. The last Fresnel sold for $128.00.

There have been a lot of "no sales" because reserve prices have been set too high. One particular ebay seller had 5 no sales in the month of December alone because their reserve price was not met. I trust they will get the message eventually. So far, 48 Fresnels have sold, with 4 still on the auction block. For the latest spread sheet, click on the link below.
