I have a question on these lights. I saw the Marblehead, OH light advertised as #413, and likewise, on the HL Product History sheet, it's #413 under the GLOW's. On the spread sheet from the dealer that I referenced a little while back, they have it listed as a 413 GLOW or a "HL400SMH" for the stamp set piece. On the other hand, I saw 30 Mile Point advertised as HL414 as part of the stamp series. On the product history sheet 414 is Barnegat!?! confused The dealer spread sheet has it listed as HL400TMP for the stamp series or HL414TMP as an "open GLK"?!?

There is a difference between issue and resale prices: 413 MH: issue = $50, resale per sprdsht = $50; 400SMH: issue = $55, resale = $100 (both issued '95). 414 TMP: issue - $62, resale = $75; 400TMP: issue = $55, resale = $75 (both '95).

Question, How in the Hades do you know what you're looking at, or trying to buy?? eek

Steve...

You're not the first to wonder about those numbers. That's why we put together this valuable page of information:

Okay, so the Marblehead IS a GLOW eventhough it has only the 182 w/o a letter, and the 414 30 Mile Point is the LE pre-184. So which version is worth more (for purchasing or selling), pre or post changeover??

Thanks,
Steve

Steve,

I guess that it all depends upon how much the buyer is willing to pay. Right?

Actually Steve, neither of them is worth a whole lot at the moment, so buy the cheapest one that you can find.

#411B St Joseph’s N. Pier – “B” Prefix- 1500 made

#412A Split Rock – “A” Prefix- 7000 made
#412B Split Rock – “B” Prefix- 1500 made
#412? Split Rock - open

#413A Marblehead – “A” Prefix- 7000 made
#413B Marblehead – “B” Prefix- 1500 made
#413? Marblehead- open

#184 30 Mile Point – no Prefix- 1000 made

#414B 30 Mile Point – “B” Prefix- 1500 made

#414 Barnegat NJ 4000 made
#414R Barnegat NJ open

During the Hay day of Harbour Light collecting the 1995 Stamp series with matching numbers and the “B” Prefix was considered more valuable since it was relatively rare compared to the “A”. But since most collectors didn’t know this, or just didn't care, the value never shot up for the “B” Prefix. This is another variation that wasn’t popular and hence had no secondary Market.
Jim J. is right there is no market difference between the variations when it comes to secondary market value. But on the other hand I think it would be neat to collect the harder to find "B" or No-Prefix. Who knows maybe down the line there may be a interest in these flag variations.

I just ran some ebay checks on bids and the general going price for the individual Stamp series Lighthouses are $15 to $48. I think a more Realistic value would be $25 to $35 The glow of course would be on the low side while the 30-mile point & Split Rock would run closser to the high side.

O Ya Acording to Jim Rutherford there are a few of the backward Lantern for the Split rock 412.
I have never seen one except for the #124. But Jim R. says there out there. Has anyone seen the #412 backward Latern?

Thanks all (especially Daniel) for that info. I'll have to check the so Mile point again but basically I was talking retail + tax for the Open End, Prefix-less Marblehead. Hmmmmm.

You may want to check the Marblehead glow again. I never heard of it not having a prefix.
Marblehead is an open addition and should have a prefix in front of its production Number. There have been a few glows (like Old Point Loma) that had some missing prefix but I never heard of a Marblehead 413 not having a prefix.
Also you mentioned the number 182 with Marblehead. That is the number for Spectacle Reef. I think you need to get a picture of the flag on the side of the lighthouse and verify its number.

Daniel,

To clarify, it's 30 Mile Point...not so Mile point! Also, the 182 was the sequential number; it was piece: HL#413 1995 Commemorative Stamp Series per bottom sticker and the flag says Marble Head OH #182 1995.

If I could only type and think at the same time...!?! Geeez

Steve,

You are not alone--I have to pause and think when I come up against a Push or Pull sign on a door, as well as "right" or "left" when giving directions. Can't blame that on age, been happening since preschool.

Very interesting.
What you are saying is that the Marblehead 413 has a sequential production number of #182. This sounds like a very interesting piece.
As far as I know there are no # 413 Marbleheads (Stamp Series) with a number without the prefix.
But there was a big mix up at the factory over the numbering of the Stamp Series for the first 331.

The story goes like this.
The Cape Hatteras (open edition) came out in 1994 with a prefix of “A”. So when the stamp series came out in 1995 the manufacturer assumed that the next prefix would be “B” They produced 331 With the “B” prefix until Harbour Lights stop them and told them that each new Glow would start out its first year with the “A” prefix. The manufacture finished out the year with the “A” prefix.
For the year of 1996 Harbour lights had the Manufacturer produce the first 331 with an “A” prefix to fill in the missing numbers from the year before. Little did Harbour Lights know that the factory had all ready implemented a fix in 95 and had all ready produced the 331 with the “A” prefix. Most likely there are duplicate numbers of the first 331.
What you probably have is one of the factory fixes that had no prefix put on it. The factory might have realized that there was some kind of mix up and numbered some of them with out a prefix until they knew which way to go.
This is the first one I have heard of. Maybe St John or some of the other collectors have heard of a Marblehead glow without a prefix.

What is the number on the flag of the 30 mile point?

One more scenario could be that when the manufacturer switched over the numbering for the 30 mile point, St Joseph and the Spectacle Reef to the limited edition the numbering started all over again with the number 1. Maybe the factory started numbering a few of the Marblehead & Split rock just like the newly made L.E.

Daniel,

Can't tell by the picture, but I'll let you know as soon as I can on the 30 Mile Point that is marked #414 on the bottom.

Okay Daniel, the 3o Mile Point piece is as the MarbleHead piece (#414 1995 Stamp...) and the sequential number is #1951.

Again the number should have a "A" Prefix on it.
I think I am going to start tracking these on ebay and try to get a feel for the numbering system. The list I gave you above was from the survival guide. Sometimes Jims Rutherfords numbers are accurate and sometimes they are not.

well the one oddity that I noticed was that the number looked as it should on the flag, but the box had a little piece of sticky tape (label-type, about the size of the old pre-UPC price tag sticker or a little smaller) over it with the number written on it "1951"...OOOPS, I just peeeeeeeled the sticker off and it won't stick back!! Underneath it says B0258. Guessing, since the flag looks untampered with, this is one of the pieces that perhaps was in the transition from #414 to #184??
