Top ten on ebay

1. Cape Hatteras # 102 $501.00

Quote:
This is one of the original lighthouses that were made in Canada at Castle Studios, Inc. It is the revised version 5234 made. Smoke free house hold. Mint in box.
No surprises here, except for the number. The owner did not release the number except for request. No wonder the number is the famous number in Revelation identifying those of the Anti-Christ. The number 666. I have often wondered if any collectors had problems with this number on their collectables and would this number drive down its value. Well this seller wasn’t taking any chances. $501 is the going price for a MIB Hatteras with original box. In fact it may be on the low side since it is a three digit with a white castle studios box.

2. HL108 BURROWS ISLAND, WA . WITH ROD $355

Quote:
Lighthouse is numbered 968/2563. This piece is a Malaysian mold with intact lightning rod. Lighthouse is in excellent condition, with no chips, nicks, flaking paint, etc. Included is the original box and all papers, also excellent.
For a Malaysian made this would be considered very high. The going price for a Malaysian made Burrows is from $150 to $235. This one is in the price range of what a burrows with the wrong-named state goes for. Why so high? Is this another one of those freak ebay bids that when out of control? No. The reason for the high price is that even though this is the more common Malaysian made there is something that makes it Rare. It is a Malaysian Burrows with a lighting rod. Probably only around a 100 to 150 made. In reality there are less of these than a missed name state variety or even possibly less than a California mold.

O ya

Just for the record this number 968 has been on ebay before.

3. Fresnel Lens 5th order #631 $300

Quote:
Harbour Lights' reproduction of a fifth order beehive lens features a brass-plated metal frame with clear resin one-piece lens. The entire lens model may be rotated by hand by means of wheels that ride in a track in the wooden base. Mint in box. Smoke free household. Number #3003 of 9500
$300 dollars!!!! Is this the real thing or a replica? Here are the highs for the past year that I have been tracking on ebay: $135, $177.50, $178.06, $223.55 & $275.17. As you can see this is the record breaker. The most obvious reason that the fifth order lense is doing so well in the secondary market is that more and more collectors are collecting all the fresnel lens. Since HL isn’t flooding the market yet with the lenses the collectors are able to pace themselves and even go after the ones that they don’t have. Thus the increase in the value of the harder to find Fresnels.

4. Big Bay Point #700-Signed $251

Quote:
You are bidding on a Harbour Lights. It is called Big Bay Point #700, 1995. It is a Christmas piece and it is signed B. Younger '96. The artist also put on the names it was given to. It is in very good condition.
This is the going price for a Big Bay pre-Christmas sale (oct. to nov). Back in the summer when they were going for around the low $100’s. I was telling everyone in July that the prices would come back for Christmas and I expected them over $200. Do I know you collectors or what?

5. 05 Reunion Mini Waugoshance & Thumbnail $225

Quote:
Here is your chance to own one of the rarest Harbour Lights yet, the 2005 Reunion Waugoshance Mini, #398. The 2005 Harbour Lights Reunion was the lowest attended to date. This makes the HL 689 Waugoshance mini one of the lowest, if not the lowest, edition size Harbour Lights has ever produced. The New Point Loma reunion piece, edition size of 480, was the lowest Reunion edition to date, but the Waugoshance mini edition size is smaller yet. It is also the first time, the mini rendition is totally different from the full-size piece. The mini depicts the light as it sits now, while the full size was produced showing the light in all its old time glory. Also, I am including a very special gift to the lucky bidder, a Waugoshance thumbnail which was given to everyone at the first night’s dinner. Both pieces are brand new, never displayed.
This is around the price I expected. Don’t be surprised that this still goes higher. The selling of these are tight and there doesn’t seem to be any 2005 reunion dumping on ebay this time.
I think this was an excellent idea for making the mini a different version of the reunion exclusive. Though the mini in reunion history has been some of the rarest HL’s made, they have all been just a smaller version of reunion piece. There are many collectors that collect the mini’s because they are scarce but there are a lot more collectors out there that collect lighthouses because they are different. With this mini a collector can get the best of both worlds. A rare lighthouse that is also unique.

6. New Point Loma 604 $180.29

Quote:
You are bidding on a #604 New Point Loma Lighthouse offered as the FIRST REUNION LIGHTHOUSE to attendees of the 1997 Harbour Lights Collector's Reunion in San Diego, CA.This lighthouse is number 237 of 950 made. It is signed by Habour Lights founder, B. Younger. It comes in the original box with all certificates and packing materials. It was never displayed.
This is on the low side of what it has been doing this year.
$150 to $350

http://cgi.ebay.com/Harbour-Lights-604-N...1QQcmdZViewItem

7.6 HARBOUR LIGHTS LIGHTHOUSES- LOW # $172.51

Quote:
THIS AUCTION IS FOR 6 HARBOUR LIGHTS LIGHTHOUSES. THEY ARE ALL IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. THEY ALL COME IN THE ORIGINAL BOXES, HAVE TENT NAME CARDS AND CERIFICATES OF AUTHENTICITY AND ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. THEY HAVE BEEN KEPT IN A SMOKE FREE ENVIRONMENT.

HL 197 MACQUARIE, AUSTRALIA 1997 RET 12/31/00 PRODUCTION 9,500 # 467 COST $68.00
HL 291 GEORGETOWN, NC 2003 PRODUCTION 5,500 # 286 COST $65.00
HL 292 COVE POINT, MD 2003 PRODUCTION 5,500 #285 COST $65.00
HL 294 ALKI POINT, WA 2003 PRODUCTION 5,500 # 286 COST $65.00
302 MISPILLION, DEL 2004 PRODUCTION 4,000 # 283 COST $65.00
HL 305 LITTLE RIVER, MAINE 2003 PRODUCTION 4,500 #283 COST $60.00
This comes out to $28.75 a lighthouse. That is the going price for HLs that are above 1995

8. Portland Head #125 $171.40

Quote:
It is number 1514 of 5500 and comes with original blue box.
In excellent shape except for some minor paint wear.
This is the going price on ebay. The winning bids have been running from $150 and $300.

9. HL101 Admiralty Head WA $157

Quote:
This piece is a Canadian with intact lighting rod and comes with the white Castle Studios box. Lighthouse is in great shape. There are no nicks, chips although what appears to be a little sun fading on the grass. Also included with this auction is a Harbour Lights Spy Glass of just Admiralty Head. There is a 1989 USPS commemorative stamp of Admiralty Head. Paper work includes C.O.A., Registration card, white tag of person who painted the piece and tent card. The flag number on this piece and the box is 1133/5500
This is the going price for a “made in Canada” Admiralty head. This is the second time on ebay for the 1133. The first time it went for $295.78 which is the highest bid for a Canadian made Admiralty head on ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Harbour-Lights-HL101...1QQcmdZViewItem

10. Portland Head #125 $129.16

Quote:
It appears to be number 706 of 5500 (The number is a little hard to read). This is the real thing, not a reproduction! The base reads 1991 and says that this is model #125. It measures about 5.5'' Tall and 6.5'' Wide. It's in excellent condition but has no box.
This is a Canadian with its sticker. In excellent shape except for the smudged number.
This is the lowest price yet for a Portland Head. The going price on ebay is between $150 and $300. Two things that hurt its value. That is no box and the smudged number. If a Harbour light is made in Canada it has to have the original box to get the expected monetary return. Compare this one with NO. 7, which is a Malaysian made Portland Head with original box.

Nice coverage as usual Daniel. Glad I got those extra 5th order Fresnel's. May just have to put them up soon for a little Christmas money!

Another outstanding report. It's nice to see some of the lights are holding their secondary market values.

Thanks guys for the kind words.
Obviously there are many Harbour lights out there that are still sought after and will bring in a good price.

The trick is for a seller to know exactly what light will bring the best price at the right time.

Good report (as usual), Dan!

Another great report, Daniel! Even though I might not be able to swing this much for an HL for years, I always enjoy reading your reports to see what the market's like. Your knowledge of prior sales is amazing...you always seem to know when the last sale was, how much it was for, whether the piece has been on eBay before....wow! eek

Thanks again! smile

Great information, Daniel. I have been looking for a SE Block that I can afford. Thought I found one last summer. Bought it from a guy who is putting his kids through college and needed the money. Totally ripped me off. One chimney top was missing and the grass below it was gone. Obviously something was dropped on the chimney and hit the grass below, too. The package was perfectly packed and a second lighthouse was in excellent condition, as well. The damage was definitely old. Buying from forum members has worked great for me, though, so I will stick to more reliable sources from now on.

With all transactions ask the seller the following:

1.Is the lighthouse in perfect condition?
2. Are there any chips on it or broken pieces?
3. Is there any paint nicks or paint rubbed off?
4. Has it been touched up with paint or any pieces repaired or glued back on?
5. (if it is suppose to have a lighting rod?) Is the lighting rod straight? Is it broken? Is there any paint missing at the rod?
6. Is the felt in excellent condition? Are there any tear or wear marks?
7. Is there an original box with matching number to the lighthouse?
8. Is the box in excellent condition? Are there any marks tears, punctures or water marks on it?
9. If this lighthouse doesn’t meet up to my expectations can I return it for full refund?

By no means do not buy a lighthouse if it doesn’t meet all the above answers. That decision is up to you and maybe the lighthouse should be priced accordingly to the answers you receive. Many collectors don’t care if there is no box or damaged felt, but you shouldn’t be paying the going price if it does.

Just because the seller is posting on this forum. I would not blindly trust him. There are many members that become a member just to sell lighthouses. Check the number of post. If you see only a few posts under the members name it is a sure sign that the seller is just registered to sell lighthouses. Still that doesn’t mean not to buy from him. Just ask the above questions. If the forum member is at Saint or super wacko status I would feel that is a very good sign for a good reference. But sill ask the questions.

We have forum members that have been selling on this forum for years and have had great feedback
They are:

Daniel, thanks so much for taking the time to list the questions I should ask. You are very thorough, as I will be from now on. A couple of years ago I bought from Randy and had wonderful luck buying from another forum member. I bought about six lights from her but only because she was kind enough to give me a break; I asked her for a layaway plan and she agreed. She just wanted her lights to go to a good home. I will pay closer attention to what you guys say from now on. And I do mean "guys". There don't seem to be a lot of women posting these days.

Grace - I think at any given time the average seems to be about 33-40% ladies to men. Your posting will definately help this average. Keep it up.

Hello Daniel,

Just wondering what you make of the 1133 showing up twice? Does that mean there are 2 of the 1133 which I doubt, or did someone get it and then re-sell it?

Just wondering

Jeff

The 1133 would be the same one.
Many times a lighthouse is bought on ebay and then resold. That is why some seller don't post the number. laugh
