WOW!! What else can one say? They are beautful; of course, one of you with a more experienced eye may detect a problem but I don't see any.

It looks like those two have been removed from e-bay? Must have been something fishy about them?? Thoughts? Jeff

Didn't catch them the first time around. They have a reserve on them now--did they have one earlier?
The one sold recently was #93 as I have #91 for sale and another CF member has #92.

I pulled them up by searching Harbour Lights, then showing the list in highest price first. That gave me both pieces, but I don't know if the listings were the first or revised listings. In any event, Daniel's links supply the newer listings, but I'm curious if there's been any change(s) to the listings as seen now. Seems strange that seller would have removed them and almost immediately relisted them without any changes (initially thought s/he may have originally listed them without a reserve, but apparently that's not the case), so chances are s/he left something out of the first listing.
Stan says eBay charges a percentage of the opening price as their "listing" fee. That would explain why the seller is listing them at such a low opening bid. The "reserve" guarantees the seller that the item won't be sold for less than s/he wants to sell it for while, at the same time, providing an idea of the highest price people are willing to pay.

I was watching these also. The original listings had a "Buy It Now" price of $5,000.00. Seems the seller removed those. I'd love to bid, but their a little out of my range.

Both listings were removed by ebay because of the seller violating one of ebays policies. The seller was able to relist his lighthouse by making the corrections. The only differance that I see is that the $5000 buy it now was removed. Must have been some conflit with the limit and the buy it now.

Hello,
What are the differences in the tips? Are those just variations? Way out of my price range, it will be interesting to see what they go for! Jeff

Jeff,
Color of tip. White was used on most of the 266; dark green was used on some. I understand there were some black ones done, but haven't seen any on eBay, nor have I heard that someone has a black tip.

Sandy I think that 'black tip' thing was a conspiracy by the old secondary market dealers (myself included) to see if we could find people to buy THREE of the most expensive Harbour Lights! Black shoe-polish! (Just kidding everyone.) But seriously, dimly-lit curios and a very, very dark green paint was mistakenly identified as 'black' methinks.

John,
It apprers that you might be incorrect. Mister Younger told me that there were only black and white versions.

I checked my earlier Survival guide and Rutherford has noted the three versions. Then in his last Survival Guide he mentions just the Green and the White tip. I have always assumed that the black and Green was the same one depending on how much light was in the room. Even though the green has been the excepted color, looking at my collection of CH-1 pictures that I have gathered from ebay I would have to say it sure looks black.
You CH-1 owners tell us: Is it black or is it green or Are there three versions?

My green-tipped CH1 is most definitely a deep Hunter green, not black. I would love to know for certain whether black-tipped CH1s exist.

Here is the info from Rutherfords 1997 edition
White Tip <150 Black Tip <40 Green Tip <75
Below is the info from his fifth edition:
White Tip 160 Green Tip <105
Rutherford got most of his info for his book from Harbour Lights. Somehow his information changed over a couple of years.

In the "Variations" section, Rutherford does say that "some of the quantities are very imprecise". He also says that "not enough information has yet been gathered" and that "as I gain reports and observations, the precision increases". Obviously there is a lot that is still unknown about variations and will anybody ever know them all? Part of the fun of collecting HL!

Maybe we should call the two variations light tipped and dark tipped...
Harry and Bill, both told me that there were only two different tipped lighthouses... Maybe someone painting some of them didn't change brushes and had some green still on their brush when they painted the last few black tipped..
I am just glad that mine is a California produced version..
Onward to The Land of the Midnight Sun!

Obviously there is a lot that is still unknown about variations and will anybody ever know them all That may be very true. Many Collectors has tried to catalogue the many variations and has fallen short of being able to complete this large under taking. Besides being able to identify the early variations the first task is to find them. With the first and second year of Harbour Lights being absorbed into the populous it is almost by chance to find one of these. Except for one new tool. EBAY!!!. With ebay we have seen collectables that we would have never seen otherwise. All we need now is to start seeing some CH-1 with numbers between 120 and 180 and maybe we can identify this mystery of the black verses green.

As I recall the story, it was told to me that the original painters all had a bit of leeway in their color choices as long as the outcome was about the same as the paint sample. Perhaps this is just the result of 2 different painters making a different choice for the tip color as they looked at it from across the room.

One is up to $3,000 and has met reserve, the other is just over $2,000 and has NOT met reserve. #94 102 is ALSO listed on ebay with a broken ventilaor ball and a chip in the lantern room area: This one is number 94 of the couple hundred plus that were made. Although it is in good condition it does have a very small chip as seen in the photos. Also, the top dome where the antenna was has been ground. Also a few light paint flakes on the roof. Bid at $102 From Lansing Michigan. Was this the same seller of the last one? Was this the same #? Now with a broken ventilator?
