Daniel,

Would you please give us your eBay/secondary market analysis on this piece.

I can only recall a couple of eBay auctions and I'm sure you keep better notes.

Thank you,
Dan

I have only tracked 6 times the Split Rock has been on ebay.
That is around half the amount of the CH-1. In my opinion the MI is probably harder to find than a Ch-1. The rough estimate of how many MI there are is somewhere around 200. You may asked how is the Split Rock MI as Rare as the CH-1. There are more MI Split Rocks but they are well absorbed into the public. I feel that majority of the owners don’t know what they have while I believe most owners of the CH-I do. I have a split rock MI with the number 191 and I tracked a corrected spelling on ebay with a number as low as 249. The amount of 200 goes all the way back to the days of Jim Rutherford where he quoted 200 in his survival guide. At this time I have not been able to prove him wrong and sounds like a reasonable number. Somewhere after 200 and all the way up to at least number 304 or possibly 350 are corrected mold versions. These are flags that have been caught with the error and was hand corrected. In the past these have been past off as MN but if you look closely you may see a M|\. Those of around 200 and below are the MI, or MT version. MT being the rarer of the two of which I am an owner of. (Sorry John the time I realized I had a MT version it was to late to get you a picture). And there may also be an M| version, which I have never seen but did hear that at least one exists.

The value of a Split Rock by ebay is probably going to be a hard one to figure out. Out of the six MI that have been listed on ebay three of them were grouped together as a package. So that leaves us three bids to work with. One had no box and a slight nick in the side the size of a pinhead. This bid was back in 2002 when collectors were stricter on their expectations of quality and would pass up one with a slight imperfections and wait for a perfect one with box. This one went for $360, which is so ridiculously low I am not evening going to consider it. So that leaves us one at $1275 in 2004 and a more recent one that went for $590 in 2005. I do know that the bid back in 2005 that went for $590 would have been a lot higher if someone on this forum didn’t miss the bidding. Seen I only have two bids to judge the MI’s value I would have to say that its ebay value is between $600 and $1200 and I would lean toward $800 to $1200 as being the next ebay outcome.

Since the MI is so rare I don’t see me being able to track down the different letter variations on ebay anytime ever. So for the first time I am asking for forum participation. For anyone that has a HL124 split rock with numbers less than 400 I would appreciate your help. Of course any info I gather from this forum on the Split rock will be available to anyone that helps.
I need to know if the state initials look like a
MI
MT
Ml
M|\
Or other
And what is its number. You can volunteer openly or email me privately. If you request your numbers to be withheld that can be done also.

I have a number:

191 SPLIT ROCK MT with green felt and sold green roof.

304 SPLIT ROCK M|\ with green felt and sold green roof.

WOW !!!

Thank you Daniel. Sadly, I am unable to contribute to your database. I doubt I'll ever find one on eBay. Have to trust to luck.

Thanks again,
Dan

67 SPLIT ROCK, Michigan with green felt (almost to the edge) and mottled light green/copper roof.

1216 SPLIT ROCK, Minnesota with green felt (to the edge) and solid light green roof.

Sandy

Daniel,

Did you mean Minnesota (MN) or do you really have an MT (Montana)?

Daniel,

Your initial statement is shown below:

Quote:
I have a number:

191 SPLIT ROCK MT with green felt and sold green roof.

304 SPLIT ROCK M|\ with green felt and sold green roof.
Do you really have #191, SPLIT ROCK MT (Montana),
or did you want to type MN (Minnesota)?

My #67's flag shows Split Rock MI (Michigan)

#1216's flag shows Split Rock MN (Minnesota).

Yes
What it is, the bottom horizontal line on I is missing thus creating a T. I will have to post a picture. It is a very strong prominent T.

Strong and UNIQUE. . . .

Sandy

P.S. What was the M| supposed to be?

I gather you don't have an MN (Minnesota). Is that correct?

Got two of those.
Canadian and a Malaysian.
But I was just focusing on the MI varieties.

Daniel asked me to respond. I have numbers 105 and 141. As those of you who know me would anticipate, I can only find #141. It is the MI variety, but it has the flocked green and brown roof paint. If I stumble across 105, I'll re-chime. Frank Carbone NELL

Thanks Frank
That helps.
When you say brown roof paint. Do you mean the spotted roof version?
