The Colchester Reef piece was referred to me by the Retired @ Retail exchange. That is the best service. The store was in Carlsbad, CA, and they shipped it to me. The Pt. Fermin was a piece that had never been picked up by the member, so the store offered it to me to get rid of it. I guess they found it in their stock room. That was incredible luck! Unfortunately, that was the only one they had.

Congratulations on your latest finds! Cherish every moment in your Treasure Hunt, one day it will end and believe it or not, you'll be disappointed it's over! (I kid you not.)

I had a tremendous amount of luck at Grandma's in Albany. They had many retired pieces still at retail and a lot of stock.

This weekend I found a store in the D.C. area that has a damaged Point Arena for sale at 40% off the retail price.

After examining the piece, the tower was broke off very close to the base. It was a clean break & is difficult to tell. The manager of the store glued back on.

If interest let me know. I don't have the stores # right now.

Found Edition A029 Matched Stamp Set for $200.00 in a local Antique shop. The Stamp Set has taken its place of honor in the cabinet. They also had a couple Alcatraz's at Retail.

Coquille sold awhile back. It should not have been on the list but we are operating out of two different locations and it was a mistake on my part.

Visited an area dealer during my lunch break on Friday. I was surprised to find HL 101 on the shelf for retail. I had been to this dealer at least five times since last fall and never saw it. Turns out it was in the store room and they just put it out to get rid of it. (Nice timing on my part) The best part is I didn't have an Admiralty Head in my collection. It made my day!

Simple but sweet story about not knowing the person you live next to. In my case, I found out at a garage sale 2 houses from me that the owner must of thought about collecting HL's and had purchased a few, and Lo-and-Behold there they were (dusty but un-damaged) shoved to the back of a cluttered table (with boxes)! Below is what I paid for them, pretty good finds I think, especially for a person who hates garage sales, or should I say USED to hate garage sales!

#150 Pensacola - $60
#152 Tawas Pt - $60

And because I bought all 3, he sold me the last one at 1/2 price.

#153 Round Isl. (red) - $30

I was at my dealer picking up my the two latest additions to my collection, Cape Agulas and St. Marks when I engaged the dealer in a little conversation about HLs. While we were conversing, he mentioned someone never came back for their Rose Island Society Exclusive. I asked him if it was for sale and he sold it to me for retail. I already had both Rose Island pieces so I bought it for a good friend. I called her tonight and she was very thrilled that I managed to find one for her at the retail price. This is part of my "cultivation program" of new HL collectors. It definitely was a "win-win" situation.

At one of the local dealers I saw a Colchester Reef with a book for 70.00 If any one is interested I can get you the name of the dealer. I'm sure they would ship. It doesn't really suit my fancy

While on a bussiness trip to St. Paul Mn, last week I found a store that was going out of bussiness. I was able to get a Drum Point Md, for 30% off retail. That was probably the best HL find I ever had. I had almost given up hope of finding one for retail, and was almost ready to look on Ebay. Then boom, there it set on an ulmost empty shelf. I couldn't believe they still had it. The lady said that another person had really looked at it about 2 hours before, but didn't have the money to get it.

Yeah Buyglass, I've actually used it. I just don't remember seeing a drum point there until after I bought mine. Of course I could just have been blind to my on needs. Which I have a tendency to be.

Great Day of searching. Picked up Colchester Reef at retail and Port Sanilac for 10% below retail. Both came from a dealer in MA.

Bill Younger told me of a collector's great find this week. The collector walked into a store and found and bought a Burrows Island, OR. lighthouse. The old story that you dream would happen to you happened. The store had cleaned up the store room apparently and after finding it put it on the shelf. It cost the collector list price of $60. I don't want to know what store it was, because I have probably been in it. Why couldn't they have straightened up then?

Out searching today and found a complete charter membership kit from 1995 with sealed Point Fermin print, pin, binder etc..This came from a dealer in RI, they must have been cleaning the back room.
I also found a redemption form for a Point Fermin Members only piece, Do you think it's too late to try and redeem it.
I paid retail for this kit, another great day of HL searching.

My mom and I went out HL hunting today. I found a Sharps Island @ retail. Now this may not seem like a deal for some, but I've been looking for awhile. We then stopped at another dealer and saw a Red Legacy. We asked if it was for sale and were told no that it was for display only. My mom pointed out that they had two there. The second one said DO NOT SELL. He sold it anyway. He asked my mom if $15 sounded alright. Unfortunately it doesn't have a box, but my mom said there ain't no box worth $50.00. Happy day today.

Jakers,
This is not for you. This is for your MOM.

Jake's mom,
If you're ever out this way, with a buy like that you can go shopping for us. You can even bring Stephen along.

While on vacation in State of Washington last week I found a double digit Old Point Loma (white bottom and original California box) at retail. Dealer found it in back room and had recently set it out for sale.

Well, once again, an old dealer finds a treasure while cleaning out the storeroom and puts it on sale for retail.

Now how can we leverage this?

How about a "National Clean Out Your Storeroom" Day for Harbour Lights dealers?

I could send out post cards a few days before I'm destined to arrive in some distant city, then check with each dealer...

hmmm.

It's much easier than that John. All you have to do is go to the stores, that I don't get to while searching for rare finds.

My dealer has always told to crawl around and look under his display tables and his store room if I find I buy. A true collectors shop I find to be very accommidating and commited to the collector.

A hint to a new collector GET TO KNOW YOUR DEALER, it pays.

It's amazing how many different attitudes you can encounter. I found a few stores that allowed me to look around, and one the manager wouldn't even let me use the bathroom (in dire need). You can bet the latter won't see my business!

Cheers,
Travis

Always ask if the Harbour Lights displayed are all the dealer has on hand. They will usually check stock or come up with an inventory list. It nevers hurts to ask. You never know where the next bargain will be.

At the store event in Warsaw, IN yesterday, we found 2 great pieces at retail. They were Drum Point and Middle Bay. Later, we found a New Canal at retail and picked that one up too, but the best deal of the day was meeting Bill Younger!

Stephen

Oh, and better yet, I had him sign Middle Bay and Drum Point too!

Last weekend was a GREAT lighthouse weekend.
On Thursday Baltimore arrivied. On Friday the UPS man brought Middle Bay and Spectacle Reef from a recent e-bay bid. On Saturday, I drove to my dealers to pick up Assateague and Boston Harbor and stopped at another dealer on the way home and found not one, not two, but three LE Thomas Point lights. (not to mention a Great Captain Island.) 6 new ones for me in three days. Watch R@R for the others.

Went to pick up my Hillsboro at a dealer that I had not visited before and found a Stonington being displayed under the glass covers they use on the Anchor Bay ships. Needless to say I snatched it right up.

Dissapointed that I didn't make it to Rosemont but turned out better in the long run. Picked up Hudson-Athens for $53 and Big Sable Point for $51 on Saturday. Then today I found Colchester Reef for $52. All within 20 miles from home. Turned on a friend to the world of HL's and it turns out his wife is a Hallmark employee. 30% employee discount from now on. Oh Happy Days!!!!

I got a Sea Grit at 15% off this weekend. The dealer is going out of the HL business. All HLs are 15%off. Sorry forgot to write down what all they had in stock. Will be back there July 10th & list if anything is left

On a recent business trip to Tulsa, found Stonington Harbor, Red Legacy and Blue Legacy, all at one store and at retail.

At a Tulsa Hallmark store, purchased a 1999 Society package with Seven Foot Knoll, Baltimore, Pt. Fermin and Sea Girt.

Walked into a store here in Oregon today, (one in which Bill had a signing event in about 3 weeks ago) and found a LE Old Point Loma on the shelf at retail ($50.00) Plus OR has no sales tax to boot. What a great day!
