Way back we had a thread going on just how or why users of these forums chose the 'handle' they did.

Since we've gained a whole lot more participants, let's start again.

JChidester is simply my first initial and last name. Somewhere in a chat long ago someone thought that 'Chidester' was a nickname because I was always 'chiding people' so it as a name like the Jokester.

Ladybug has been a nickname of mine for quite some time now. As a teacher I have always had a love for science and have tried to instill in my "charges" the importance of protecting all living creatures including the smallest of bugs. I particularly like the ladybird beetle and have used that as a sort of logo on notes, etc. During summer camp the kids refer to me as Ladybug and in addition to lighthouses, I enjoy collecting things with ladybugs on them. It seemed appropriately when I joined the forum to choose the handle LADYBUG since that has become my "middle" name to the younger generation. aka Darlene

Mombo is a name that my daughter's high school X-country coach gave me. That was a long time ago now but it's stuck.

All lot of you had a name with the word"keeper" as part of it. All the "keepers" seemed to be taken. Then I thought of the HL set that was made of the lighthouses were ladies had been keepers. I had recently bought that set. So "Ladylightkeeper" sort of fell into place. Then I met Connie Small afterwards and she epitomized the courage and spirit of these lighthouse ladies, and I was glad that I had chosen that name, to remember the females' role in our maritime history.

That left my husband searching for a webname also ----- the foghorn building seemed to be an important part of the lighthouse complex. So I called him the "foghornkeeper" and that has become his handle here on the Forums.

I think these symbolic names add to the fun of reading your posts. But I wish someone would put out a "directory" of Forum names and your real names side by side, so we could remember who is who. Any takers for that project?

Barbara

"Torchbearer" came along after I retired from the Coast Guard. While I was active, a few of my duty stations consisted of "working" aids to navigation. I have repaired many lights throughout the years which included the replacement of lamps at these sites. So, in a way, I was a torchbearer.

Not much to tell here. As you can see, my handle is my name. Not very flashy.

If anyone should ever have the opportunity to e-mail me, my address is FFEMTR1@aol.com. The FF is Fire Fighter, the EMT is Emergency Medical Technician, and R1 is the fire apparatus which I am assigned.

Not much exciting in my 'handle', either. That's my first name and the first letter of my last name.

I know! I know! You're a dealer, in the business brokering or buying and selling the physical manifestation of other's creativity.

I have to admit I wasn't very creative. This is my name. At the time that I registered I was working full time and taking an accounting class at night. I had accounting entries on my mind and couldn't think of anything but my name to use. (I had three exams in the last four weeks of class.) I guess I am lucky I didn't use some financial term that I would later not want to be reminded of. I couldn't wait to finish that class! This forum was a great escape!

Well, digitalman isn't my real name but it does signify my being. It was actually derived from two sources: 1.)"digitalman" is one of my favorite songs from my favorite band "RUSH", 2.)In this "digital" era of computers, cameras and communications, I find a need to be involved with all of the above, and more. So, I guess you could call me a "Digital-man", sorta!

Oh! BTW, my real name is Mark, not quite as elaborate as "d-man", but i'll answer to both!

Well I've told this before, but here it is for all those new "folk." Weasel58 was dervied from my original nickname of "Wyllde Weasel," on one of the first BBS's that my group hung around on I was user Wyllde Weasel user number 58. As time goes by the "Sysop" changes software and we are limited to 8 charectors way to few for my old handle, so I just start using Weasel and adding 58 at the end of posts to say it was the same old me. As other BBSs came and went I started signing up as Weasel58 from that point on.

Mine comes from way back. I started hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire in 1950 at the ripe old age of 11 and have been at it ever since. Something that I always have enjoyed and had the name long before the internet. It's kind of stuck with me through the years and I can't part with it. I even have it on the number plate of my pickup truck. I get carried away with things every once in a while. OH BOY! When I'm not the MtnHkr they call me Bert.

Mine is not very exciting either. My full name is Christine, but in 7th grade one of my teachers started calling me Chris. It has stuck ever since (too many years to count). When I was in college, I pledged a pharmacy fraternity. Yes, I am female, but oddly enough, all professional Greek organizations are known as fraternities, regardless of the gender of their members. During the pledge period, we were required to write our name in all lower-case letters (pledge chris ettling). I've since married (now Chris Grass) and just find it very convenient to use the handle of chris g. Nothing special- just who I am and the lower case letters remind me of a fun time in college!

Well my choice came from my husband's name which is Terrance L Cooper thus TLC. We tried to get a license plate with that name but it was already taken so my next choice was MMTLC which stands for Mr & Mrs...

The pump don't work cuz the vandals stole the handle ... ooops wrong forum.

Mine is a carryover from the name I used on the old AOL Lighthouse Collectors forum. AOL rejected most of the 'screen names' I tried, so here we are.

It will get much more interesting once we upgrade to avatars. ;->

My nickname was given to me by my grandmother's cousin during a trip to Portland, Oregon with my uncle. I was the designated driver. Everyone we were visiting had been retired for several years and they just couldn't believe how happy I was all the time. All of them called me Sunshine until the end of our visit. Using Sunshing just seemed a fitting tribute to relatives that took me to see Tillamook Rock.
By the way my real name is Judy.

My son, Jake (Stephen), made me use Jake's Mom. He thinks just because he's a Cruise Director he has some kind of special authority. I actually wanted to use Go-N-Postal. But he said people would think I was crazy. I said hey, who would notice. Everyone on here is or wants to be a Wacko anyway. Since I'm not a collector, I was going to use HL MoneyTree. But he said no to that one too. So that's how I got stuck with Jake's Mom. My real name is Cheryl. Oh yeah,I'm not crazy.

The 'drwhok9' handle comes from the British science fiction/adventure show Doctor Who. This show was about a Time Lord who could travel in space and time. At one time he had a robot dog called K9. I just combined the two since many variations on 'drwho' were taken when I set up my first e-mail account.

Just call me a 'Wacko' for Harbour Lights and Dr. Who, as well as just being 'wacko'.

P.S.

Alot of this information about names is also found in The Fog Signal Building forum under Handles if anyone is interested is going back and searching.

It is nice to run into a Dr. Who fan here.

Now I don't feel so strange being a WACKO and a Whovian.

Well, I didn't choose a very exciting handle for myself - just my first name. But my last name often causes a big stir. I never used my last name here because I was concerned about putting it out on email.

Many of you know it already, but here goes --my last name is Sinatra.

Mine is first name, last name. OregonNed is the AOL handle I use where I house my webpage, and it pretty much describes location and name. I'd have to say that AOL's best feature is that they give me a total of 84 meg of free webspace, enough to put up quite a few pictures!

Pharos built the 1st lighthouse, and thus Pharology is the study, therefore I tried to name myself "pharologist", but to no avail, as that name was already taken. So I phoneticaly shortened it to "pharologst" , without the "i". Many of the unenlightened (non lighthouse people) think its some sort of doctor!!

Now everyone here knows why I chose Nana. But, just in case you don't know, it was to celebrate my twin granddaughters. Actually, they call me "nanabanana". For the life of me, I can't imagine why they would call me that. All of you who know me know I act very sophisticated...Right? Oh my, have I just opened myself up to all sorts of comments...or what?
