Good Thursday Morning!

I'll first post a bit of sarcasm .... REUNION? In the past three years, support of the Regionals has been very disappointing!

The 20th Anniversary of the founding of Harbour Lights will soon be upon us!

From past experience, I know it will take at least eighteen months of planning, defining a location, negotiating prices, "bulding" commemorative lighthouses, catering etc.

I am not suggeasting you pack you bags yet BUT ....

As I do research, I can aassure you Disney is not in my vision!Sorry, enough of Minnie, Mickey, Daisey, Donald and Goofy! I am hearing the call of Horace Greely... "Go west young man .. go west."

So if the REUNION is in 2011 what about regionals in 2009 and 2010?

Tony - The old west has already seen one! How about a little bit of "Southern Charm" and mint julips and consider Charleston, SC? The war is over with down here and we should be considered. You've had one in San Diego, Providence, Great Lakes and Baltimore(it's not the south because they don't mix grits with their eggs or know that iced tea is supposed to be served at supper)so what about us? Charleston is centrally located, plenty of nearby lights, reasonable accomodations, large airport and lighthouses that could be toured by a boat excursion. The early or late spring time(before hurricanes) or late fall(after hurricanes) is the perfect time.

Good Thursday Afternoon!

I can also assure you SanDiego is not in my line of vision! Been there done that!

Honestly, while Harbour Lights has not had a Reunion in Florida - there have been several Regionals - we need to move on to the extra-ordinary!

I am researching and working on something a bit out of the ordinary! Something Harbour Lights has not done or been to before!

No it is not in Nebraska!

I know your not happy with Florida and after thinking about it, I would not be suggesting Florida. I'm talking about Charleston, SC in the spring or late fall when everything is beautiful up there and it's 300 miles away from the northern part of Florida. Daniel did a survey about a year ago and I think that Charleston was a heavy favorite of the Forum members which comprise a good random sampling of HLs collectors all over the United States.

Of course it's your call and HLs is footing the bill.

Alaska would be cool (no pun intended). I wonder if I could get a loan for it.

Seattle would be the logical choice. lots of Lights in the area and lots of other things to do. We could hold the meetings in the restaurant of the space needle, that would be something we haven't seen HL do. :p

San Francisco or Seattle would be my choices for the very west.

Duluth or the Apostle Islands would be my choices for the mid-west.

I think an Alaskan Cruise Reunion would be an EXALANT idea! Could that be????? I would without any doubts be on that one!!!

All accommodations would be covered in one easy sweep. Plenty of rooms available, a very large auditorium and several large lounges for events, food 24/7, parking at the dock, airport at the departure city, and lots of Lighthouses to see!

Tony, I don't know what you are thinking about. But I think this would be a winning idea!

This is so exciting!! Wow! The west would be super. Another reunion would be terrific so just give us plenty of time to save up and save the date. Some of us don't even care where it is held as much as when it will happen. If it's a Harbour Lights Reunion we're there!

There are two approaches for Harbour Lights to go.
Pick the most interesting and exciting place or pick an area were the collectors are. Not saying places in the mid-Atlantic to Charleston is not exciting but most of us have been there and frankly I don’t think there is a place on the whole east coast as interesting and beautiful as Oregon or Washington State. But using the forum as a reference the majority is on the east coast and great lakes area. And a place near the mason Dixon line would be the most convenient and cost effective for the majority to travel. If Harbour Lights picks this fantastic place that is 2,000 to 3,000 miles from the majority I would think that the turnout would be lower.

If HL is trying to get a big turnout maybe Harbour Lights need to consider a more universally centralized location for the many. If Harbour Lights wants a place that is different and individual cost is not the main concern then the North West coastline would be the best choice.

I have given up in fighting for a reunion for the South. It just not going to happen.
Maybe you can give us Southerns a nice big fat regional in Charleston.
If not that’s okay too, I am thinking of switching my collecting to Sea Shells and Florida License plates.

The possiblity on another reunion will have us socking money away now to pay for it. The chance to attend another reunion is more important to us than where it is held. It gives us a chance to visit old friends. Plus, HL has NEVER put on a bad reunion. They are always fun and exciting. Start your preparations now.

I think the most important factor is letting people know far enough in advance to make plans.

Tony mentioned that the regional events have not been that well attended but...we still don't even know where they will be held this year and we are already 1/3 the way through the year. I have missed them in years past because I had already made my travel plans for the year.

Just my 2 cents worth.

DITTO - I am with other forum members, aka Harbour Lights Collectors, for the weekend and we are in the planning stages of a trip for 2010........ Have been asking for regional info for month, also we were both, in separate emails, promised an answer by a certain date, which has not been forthcoming! Not very impressed with planning - If they have deciced not to do a regional they should just say so, so that we can all get on with our plans.

Will the possible reunion be in 2010 to celebrate the 20th year of Harbour Lights?

Or might it be in 2011 to celebrate 20 years of Harbour Lights?

I really like the idea of an Alaskan cruise. Could we get enough folks so that the boat was only HL Wackos?? Wouldn't that be great!

Okay...Wanted - Female Roommate for HL 20th Anniversary Reunion - non-smoking only, but snoring okay! laugh

A regional in Charleston in the early Spring or early Fall would be nice, and would be one I would like to attend - given enough advance notice.

Need to know with advance notice so I can save the dollars and also be sure that I can get the time off from work, along with planning any other travel I want to do for that particular year.

With regard to Regionals, not being retired and only having x number of time-off days available and given the distance I would have had to travel and the expense of airline/hotel/car rental, I have only been able to attend one Regional (Portsmouth). Portsmouth worked really well for me becaue I was able to combine the trip with a visit with my family since they are just across the river from Portsmouth.

My retirement dream is to be able to travel more when I don't have to worry about limited time-off from work. That dream has been pushed off given the state of my 401k, but don't get me started...

I agree! For an adventure like this the average person needs at least one year to 18 months in-advance notice.

1. To save up the money needed to attend, and the money needed to travel to the event destination, as well as other expenses.

2. To make vacation arrangements with employer. Some employers require a year notice for a week or 2 week off vacation.

And personally if I'm going to drive let's say from (Mobile, AL to California), or (Mobile, AL to Maine), or (Mobile to Michigan), etc. I'm going to do some additional Lighthouseing along the way. And I need that additional time and money to do it!

When we did the 2005 Reunion on Mackinaw Island Joe and I took two weeks off for that 3 day event. We drove up to Cleveland, OH and visited every lighthouse from there westward and up the east coast of Michigan. Did the 3 days in Mackinaw and then visited every lighthouse from there down the west coast of Michigan and across Indiana. We also do all the National Parks along the way too!

In 2006 when we did the Regional in Portland, Maine, Joe and I took three weeks off for that 1 day event (plus 3 days Lighthouseing Maine with Dave). We drove up to the NY/CN state line and then visited every lighthouse possible and National Park up through Connecticut, Rode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine and into Canada before the Regional and came back by way of Pennsylvania to visit Gettysburg and other National Parks.

Now let's just say that maybe (as good a guess as any at this point) Tony is thinking about an event anywhere along the Pacific Coast. Joe and I would need at least a MONTH maybe more, because we would want to drive up the entire coast line from southern California to Vancouver seeing as many lights as possible. As well as the NP's all the way across from south Alabama. Now that's a lot of time and a heck of a lot of money in addition to the time and money for the event itself!!! But hay if your gona go that far and know that you may never go back again. You may as well go for the GOLD! (yes that's a pun on words) wink

Tony,

You have got our attention! A 20th Year Celebration should give us all plenty of time to save up if 20 years is 2014! I'm not sure when it would be but I wouldn't think 2010. If it is then we need to know in a hurry.

Reunions are so much more than regionals and definitely better attended.

And as Judy said:
Quote:

What did we have at the 2005 Reunion, somewhere around 500 people wasn't it? I'd call that a good turnout!

Judy,

Where did you get 2014? The first Harbour Light was released in Jan. 1991. So Jan. 2011 would be 20 years.

Whenever it will be, or wherever it will be..... Tony's little attention getter will have me saving up starting tomorrow!!!

It would however be nice to know ASAP as to the when and where. (More the when, than the where, because we will go wherever you want us to go!)

Stephanie,

I guess I was thinking 1994 and 20 years would be 2014. Since I didn't start collecting until then I lost track of when the original year was. So.... is it 2011 or 2010? I guess either time would be fine but if it is going to be in 2010 we need to start saving now. We have been to all of the reunions so we definitely would not want to miss this one.

Something a bit out of the ordinary that hasn't been done by Harbour Lights sure makes this a most exciting venture.

Those of us out west also love to hear those words!

Not to get too picky with this but I think it's a little obvious that 2010 is the 20th year of Harbour Lights.

If 1991 was the 1st year it's pretty simple to figure. The last digit of the year lines up. 91=1, 92=2, 93=3, etc. Then 2000 was the 10th year, then 2009 is the 19th year, so 2010 is the 20th year for collecting HL's!

1st year 1991
2nd year 1992
3rd year 1993
4th year 1994
5th year 1995
6th year 1996
7th year 1997
8th year 1998
9th year 1999
10th year 2000
11th year 2001
12th year 2002
13th year 2003
14th year 2004
15th year 2005
16th year 2006
17th year 2007
18th year 2008
19th year 2009
20th year 2010

Of course, that doesn't mean HL can't wait till the 20th year is history to have an anniversary in 2011, the 21st year of production.

I know, I know, this is getting a little too detailed !!! Just doing it for clarification.

If you got married in 1991 would you have your first year anniversary in 1991 or 1992?
A whole year needs to pass before you can celebrate a yearly anniversary. Harbour Lights couldn’t have their first year anniversary the very same year they started, so we start with 1992 as the first year. That is the time for one year to pass.

The easiest way to figure out an anniversary is to add the amount of years you are celebrating. If harbour Lights started in 1991 and they want to celebrate their 20th anniversary just add 20 to the date. 1991 plus 20 equal 2011. If the Youngers started their business in Febuary 22 of 1991 than their 20th anniversary would be Febuary 22 of 2011

Daniel, Look at anniversaries however you want, but it's a fact that 2010 is the 20th year of collecting Harbour Lights.

Business anniv's are different from wedding anniv's. Wedding anniv's are to the day. Business anniv's are only to the year. I don't know the offical first day HL started. So we might as well say it was January 1, 1991, so December 31, 1991. Is a whole year. One anniversary!

Some company's have it the same year, some the next. That's up to the company.

I think your talking anniversaries and I'm talking years in business. Where both technicly right. Whatever !!!

Actually Dennis your post of the Eddystone link answers my question. Since HL celebrated the 10th anniv in 2001, then they should celebrate their 20th in 2011.

2010 is still the 20 year !!!

No; then January 1,1992 would be the whole year. One anniversary.

An anniversary (from the Latin anniversarius, from the words for year and to turn, meaning (re)turning yearly; known in English since c. 1230) is a day that commemorates and/or celebrates a past event that occurred on the same day of the year as the initial event. For example, the first event is the initial occurrence or, if planned, the inaugural of the event. One year later would be the first anniversary of that event. The word was first used for Catholic feasts to commemorate saints.

Loon - Hope you don't have anyone in your family that celebrates any special days on a leap year because the way you calculate dates is a first to me.

HL's 10th Anniversary Piece came out in Jan. 2001 and retired in Dec. 2001. The entire year of 2001 was their 10th year of exhistance. HL will celebrate their 20th year of existance during the entire year of 2011. The exact date they started business is their anniversary date and it was sometime in 1991 but their 10th year of existance was 2001 and their 2oth year of existance will be 2011. Their 20th anniversary date will be the date in 2011 that they actually started their business in 1991.

Ok I think this is getting weird. But since you'll won't see it both ways lets make it real simple:

If you take one release from each year Harbour Lights made a replica and but them on a table, since this is 2009 how many pieces would you have? 19 so next year you would have 20, correct.

That's all I'm saying. I am talking years in business, not how we celebrate anniversaries.

I fully take blame for starting this banter, I just wanted to know if the anniv celebration was in 2010 or 2011. Shoot me !!!

No, I think we should keep you around. Don't let Social Security know that I'm only 65 because I have them convinced that since I was born in June 1943 that I'm turning 66 this year.

Actually, 2010 would be their 20th year of existence, in 2011 they will celebrate their 20th anniversary.

Since HL has yet to finalize a regional event for 2009, I would expect the earliest you might see a reunion is 2011 and they had better be starting to plan it fairly soon.

The previous reunions have normally been announced around 14 months out, with registration starting about 11 - 12 months out.

Attendance at the Mackinac reunion was right at 400. There were about 520 each of the full sized Waugoshance and the Cheboygan Crib Light produced. Those that chose to purchase them could purchase two per attendee. I was able to get Kim to agree to match the Crib light number to their mini, full size and Mark Sherman print number (another first).

Randy is correct in that the Mackinac reunion had to be the first reunion to fully fund / support itself.

And you are the master planner of reunions! They need to enlist your expertise, Dave, on this next one again. 2011 sounds like the most reasonable if folks are going to save up for a big event. I like the payment plan like we had at the Mackinac reunion and the Nova Scotia trip!

My two cents worth!!!!

If there is ever another HL Reunion, it should be funded by those who attend, but Harbour Lights will need to provide the "goodies" to build the interest above and beyond the get together status.

2010 or 2011 no matter, as long as there is a reunion! However, I must take exception Rich:

"Baltimore(it's not the south because they don't mix grits with their eggs or know that iced tea is supposed to be served at supper)"

We keep two gallons of ice tea in the fridge year round. I eat my grits with cheese and they do get on the eggs! Do you know where the Mason Dixon Line is? When at the Baltimore Reunion you may have noticed the hill across the harbor. It is called Federal Hill because the Union was encamped there with cannons FACING the city to prevent secession. I could go on but I'll resist the temptation in the interest of staying on topic. E would love to go to a Reunion in Charleston. Such a beautiful area!

ginnyanne - Your point is well taken, however, you might be the exception to the rule. After spending 8 years stationed in Washington DC and traveling to Baltimore more times then I can count, I still consider Baltimore as mid-Atlantic and not the South regardless of where the Mason-Dixon Line is. I loved the Maryland-DC-Virginia area so much so that if our children didn't live in Florida, Northern Virginia would be my 2nd retirement choice. This is my opinion after being there for those 8 years. I'm not trying to insult the State of Maryland, I'm trying to build a case for Charleston.

Hey Rich,

I don't know how far south the mixing of grits with anything starts. I've always had my grits on the side next to the eggs, and have never seen them mixed, not in my native Virginia or on any visits to Charleston.

But would love a reunion in Charleston!

I'm all for a reunion or regional in the Charleston area. Sounds like a great place.

Given that lack of attendance at regionals, and I've been no help(yet), maybe they should have them only every other year? Make it a two day event to make it worth while to travel to.

Then have a few in-store events the years you don't have a regional.

Reunions could be every six or eight years replacing that years regional.

Judy - If you've never mixed your "over easy eggs" in your grits you have got to try it one time. Then add salt and pepper with a little bit of butter(salt, pepper and butter to your taste) and you've tried them the "Redneck Way". I learned this from my late Father-in-law the first morning that I ate breakfast with him. He was a native Floridian and my Mother-in-law was from Georgia and she said that is the way all her relatives ate them. My one Brother-in-law is from Birmingham, AL and he said that is how he ate them growing up. I also know a couple of restarants in Dale City/Woodbridge VA area that reccomends in their menus to eat your eggs that way. Try it and let me know how you like it.

I believe you are mistaken. It was named Federal Hill long before the Civil War. "Federal Hill Park was given its current name in 1788 during a citywide celebration of Maryland ratifying the U.S. Constitution; some 4,000 Baltimoreans came to the hill to celebrate."

I'm with Judy, I have never heard of mixing your grits with your eggs either. I grew up in Virginia, and my people (for those who don't know this means relatives wink ) are from North Carolina and Virginia.

The butter, salt and pepper definitely or sometimes a little red-eye gravy.

I don't mix my grits with my eggs, but I do like my sweet tea with the sugar mixed in while it's still hot. Sugar just does not desolve well after the ice is added.

I knew that! Another senior moment! My point really is that Maryland was truely divided. It was indeed a clash of cultures and a "brother against brother" time.
I would love to have a reunion in the beautiful "Southern" city of Charleston!

Charleston would be great and there are lots of lights to see before and after the reunion.

People don't consider Florida the south but I was raised on grits with butter and salt only--my favorite breakfast food! I never like mixing them although my nephew likes cheese in his. I introduced grits to my husband (born in NE and raised in CO)when we got married and he has been eating them ever since! I remember my first teaching job in Brooksville, FL where the superintendent had a huge fish fry with grits for all the teachers, administrators and staff. That was a treat!

I've lived in Maryland all my life, eat grits with my breakfast eggs, and prefer iced tea with dinner. Had a wonderful time at the HL reunion in Baltimore, and would try to attend a reunion held in Charleston. 2011 would be my choice of year.

By the way when talking about a reunion how many days are we talking about? Is it a weekend or a week? Just curious.

Thanks. That helps. If I remeber reading there was a caravan throughout MI. Everyone tried to go to as many lights as possible and thanks to Dave they got in to some that was hard to see?

Fran, if you click on the 'Reunion 2005 Forum' and change the view setting to 'Show all Topics' you will get all kinds of threads about before, during and after the 2005 Reunion.. You probably have the default setting of "Show Last 30 Days" now and won't see the old threads until you change it to Show All..

or try the following link, hopefully it will give you all of the threads..
