September 20 - Regional Event on Long Island NY

NOTE NEW DATE - previously was gonig to be Sep 27.

See my post of 2/28 for the new location and times and a map.

I expect that collectors and/or the LI Chapter of the USLHS might plan some lighthousing events around this Regional.

Who's planning to attend?

This is Rosh Hashanah, one of the most holy days of the Jewish Year falls on this date. It's too bad since that excludes our Jewish collectors and hobbyists.

If we haven't run out of vacation days and funds by then I hope to drive out to the Regional and then drive up the coast and visit West Point Lighthouse on Prince Edward Island and do some leaf peeping on the way back to Indy!

It's the first I've heard of this one.

I'd say I'm going to try, but I have not had much luck with Long Island based Lighthouse adventures.

This is right around the corner, so it's a strong possibillity.

Count me in! Long Island is a great place to visit that time of the year. You can even pick up some great Long Island potatoes while you're there.

Now let's see what the location is going to be...

Fire Island has said they will have special times for attendees to climb and view the lighthouse on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Some even at night.

Bob - What?! They still grow potatoes on Long Island?...and people come here just to buy them? I thought they built houses over all of those farms. I don't even know if I've ever eaten an actual Long Island grown potato?. I'd be thinking more of pumpkins...and still our great corn (or what's left of it) at that time of the year!

Basil & Geri are the famous Harbour Light Collectors(featured in the last Legacy) who won the Oregon lighthouse trip in the Collectors contest. The are also very active lighthouse enthusiasts from LI and play an active role in the Long Island Chapter. They were also in Baltimore for the last Reunion.
We'll have to coax them a little more to jump in here! Only 5 posts eek .

Hi Kristin,...I bought a fifty pound bad of Long Island potatoes near the end of August and they were some of the best potatoes I ever had. They lasted very well. They were so good that I had a friend pick up another fifty pound bag later that fall. The price both times was $10 for a fifty pound bag. That's about one-third of what we normally pay for new potatoes.

Well, since the topic here is the LONG ISLAND REGIONal(ok, I stressed all the letters but the last two, so I can claim to stay on topic)...Bob - I have to ask - where did you buy these potatoes? I would bet somewhere in the Riverhead area...or east of there?
I'm planning on getting some of these when they are in season - I live here, and all I know about Long Island potatoes is that the legendary Levittown was built on a potato farm...my parents' house was built on a potato farm...Stony Brook university was built in the middle of potato fields...and that there's a very fine line just drawn (right around where I live now) where the county starts testing well water for particular pesticides associated with potato farming that continued during a certain period of time (whereas most potato farms west of that line had greatly disappeared by that time).
By the way - LI Regional - I'm there.

Hi Kristen, ...I stopped by a small farm stand near Green Port. I was traveling from west to east and the stand was on the right just before you take the right to go to downtown Green Port. It was right near where the road splits a marshy area. It was definitely a seasonal stand and not a year-round produce store.

I gave some of the potatoes to my folks and didn't finish the bag until November (roughly three months from the date of purchase). They really lasted very well. I would definitely buy another bag while I was attending the Fall Regional.

Dave - You are quite the trouble maker, aren't you? laugh ...I would imagine the poor potato farmer sold the property to a developer to get some $$$...who then built an entire housing development...used to be called "Pleasant Hills" - lots of houses, not just one...so we can't just blame my parents.
Bob - Thanks for the tip on the farm stand - I'll be in Greenport on Monday - too bad they are out of season - I'm definitely going to have to get and try some LI potatoes in the fall!

Hi Jake and Gloria,
It seems just like yesterday that we met you in Baltimore.
I'm sure we can figure something out as we get closer. I'm sure HL will be using lots of our time to help them. In the mean time, check out these sites for ideas.

Hi Bob & Mary Ann.
It has been a long time since Baltimore. I'm ready for another great reunion. Sure would like to see a bunch of lights on a cruise ship. Then to be able to take day trips and see lights up close.

Would that work on Long Island.?

Thanks for the links I will need the information one of these days. Will let you know if and when we are coming that way.

Hope for the regional there, if not a Reunion.

Keep in touch

Jake & Gloria

NOTE THAT THE DATE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO SEP 20 a week earlier than previously announced. Location and time still to be announced. Lil Red reports she is firming up details.

If you are planning on coming to LI for the reunion, keep in mind that the Long Island Chapter will be holding their 4th Annual "Beacons of the Night" cruise on the evening of September 20, leaving out of Greenport. On the cruise we see the Long Beach Bar (Bug Light), Orient Point, Plum Island, Little Gull and Race Rock lighthouses.

Also, I think that weekend is also Greenport's annual Maritime Festival.

Lots of fun stuff to do on LI that weekend! laugh

The latest location is Merrick which is in Nassau County on the south shore. It is 45 minutes from Fire Island.

Latest time for the LI regional is 11am - 3pm. This will make it possible for attendees to leave the regional immediately eek to get to the Beacons Cruise. After consulting with Bob Muller, he stated, he would change the start of the cruise event to 5:30 pm. laugh
We've also invited the Harbour Lights staff as our guests to help ensure the transition.
Nothing is locked in stone yet but I wanted to let you in on what we're trying to set up for extra lighthouse activities for regional attendees. cool

Third week-end of the month. Why, oh Why do they always pick the third weekend of the month. It has to be a popular weekend. I was so happy when it was the 27th, I was free. Now I've got to see how I can rearrange my Saturday Schedule so that I can make it. Oh well, Been there, done that before, will do again.
