The Harbour Lights Great Lakes event will be held on Saturday, August 23rd at Cedar Point, Ohio.

The specifics are still being worked out, and I am waiting for confirmation from Cedar Point that they will host the group. (they have given preliminary approval)

I expect to have some add-on activities for Saturday and/or Sunday to view other lights in the area. I will also be setting up a group rate at an area hotel.

This event will be within range for many collectors. At this point it is expected that there will be 10 or fewer total signing events this year, with the regionals being two of them.

More info as it becomes available, just wanted to let you all know to start your thinking process.

Dave...John and I are interested in attending this event. We would be interested in any side trips in the area since we haven't seen any Ohio lighthouses.

Delta has a direct flight into Cleveland from SLC so that looks like the best airport for us to fly in to. As soon as you get a confirmation on the date, we'll book our flights.

Thanks for all you do in planning these events. applaud

Cleveland is closer for flying- but don't neglect looking at Detroit. The difference in airfar might be worth the slightly longer distance to Cedar Point.

For flying, try Continental to fly into Cleveland, Northwest to fly into Detroit. Those are hubs for each, so there'll be direct flights to more cities into there, and it'll possibly be cheaper.

Unfortunately, I can't come, since I'll be on the Outer Banks at that time. But I wish I could be along!

Southwest flies into Detroit Metro -- there are several lighthouses to be seen starting at Belle Isle Detroit and following the Detroit River down to Toledo, then around the Lake Erie shore to Cedar Point.

Maybe a few of us could meet in Detroit rent a van and do the lights before the weekend. Anyone interested?

As per our phone conversation, Cedar Point sounds like a good place to gather.

Great news Dave. A regional practically in my back yard. For those of you not familiar with Cedar Point it is the roller coaster capital and is very busy traffic wise so plan to get there early as traffic can back up for several miles. We also have numerous water parks in the area.

The August 23 date looks to be a keeper. I will be working to add some extras around the gatheringm, so stay tuned. No hotel set yet, but those who have expressed an interest will receive the information when it is arranged.

This event will probably involve a picnic on the grounds. This regional will require pre-registration to participate.

Am working to get stuff done for New Orleans first. Will be working to provide some other LH related stuff from Friday night - Sunday, depending on when people will arrive. I know that a number are planning to do some roller coaster riding while they are in the neighborhood, so trying to work around that.

Those that have sent me an email indicating interest will get info when it is available. I will also post a general summary here.

I will be sending some information concerning hotels and such to those who have indicated an interest in participating in the Cedar Point regional. If you have not requested information, but would like to be added to the list, please send an email to lighthouse-events @ sbcglobal.net (without the spaces, of course). Please use a subject line of "Cedar Point regional".

The hotel room block will close on Monday, June 23. After that date you may still be able to book rooms at the reduced cost depending on availability.

There are some extras being planned at this point. On Friday afternoon and Sunday afternoon, the Toledo Lighthouse Society will tentatively take us out to the light for a visit. There is a possibility that we may be able to visit the inside of the light.

I have begun to accept registrations for the regional itself. Cost is $20 per person, which includes lunch. If you are not a guest of one of their on-site hotel properties you will also have to pay a $10 parking fee.

I have recently sent an update to those who have indicated their interest. If you have not received the update, or need to be added to the list please send me a note at lighthouse-events @ sbcglobal.net (after taking out the two spaces - the hyphen is part of the address).

I am considering flying into Detroit. What lighthouses can be seen between there and Cedar Point? Approximately how long should I allow to do the trip if I were to stop and see the lighthouses? In the planning stages and trying to figure out the best place to fly into from Seattle. Thanks for the help smile

Things are coming along very nicely at this point. The two trips to Toledo Harbor Light are about 75% full. Late this morning I heard from the folks at Marblehead that we will be able to have a picnic there, and the ranger will open the tower for our group to climb. The CG has also agreed to host us for a tour of their station if time permits.

I will be sending out a note to those who have indicated interest. If you have not responded to the previous notes and sent in your regional registration ($20 per person) you should be doing so. Also need to let me know if you want to participate in the Toledo tour and/or the Marblehead picnic. Please use lighthouse-events @ sbcglobal.net (after removing the spaces, but leave in the hyphen).

I also am looking forward to hearing about the regional and seeing pictures. I couldn't get away to attend due to having just moved to Kansas City (where there are so many lighthouses - wink ), but I am going to see the Cedar Point lighthouse in October. Any hints about traffic, best places to eat, stay, etc. would be helpful. I've seen all the lighthouses in Ohio except that one, so trying to check it off my list...

Maybe someone could also fill us in on the trip to Toledo light on Sunday that drove Dave and Sandy "up the wall" trying to get organized, mostly in finding a boat to take the group.

Max, I will post some pics of the trip out to Toledo as I get some time (will be in a different post). I'm kind of surprised to see you posting under your normal ID. I would have thought the witness protection folks would have told you that was a no-no. I am presuming they are working on a new identity and relocation for you?

Don't think word of my Regional "crimes" is out yet and I'm not advertising (bragging). Maybe I'll hide out in the bathroom again if it helps.

Best Regional yet for me!! Thanks for all your work Dave to plan this special event at this amusing place. Special trips before and after a regional also make the trip well worth it.

Tony decided to also award a gold signing event piece (Loon Island) for someone who had brought their gold entry tickets. Tony had to leave early, but drew a name before he left - Max. A little while later I looked over at the prize table and noticed my gold regional piece (Sapelo Range) was missing. Not sure who took it off the table, but I looked over to where Max was sitting and he was admiring the piece at his table. I wandered over, and whispered to Max that the piece he won would have to be mailed and was the event gold, not the regional gold. Max understood and I returned the light to the prize table.

Well, it came time to draw the gold regional winner and Harry drew the card. When it was announced, the winner was . . . Max. Holy smokes, two individual gold pieces the same day! I remember when the same collector won two gold pieces at the same regional back in the days when five were given out at each regional, but this is a major coupe for Max.

As people were bussed over to the Cedar Point Light for their visit, collectors were allowed to leave items in the room until they got back. I noticed that Max carried his gold piece with him. Several very nice collectors offered to help him by carrying the package for him, but he declined those offers. I did suggest to Sue that she and Max might want to stop and purchase a lottery ticket on the way home . . .

To say the very least, Max has had a good collecting year. In addition to his double winnings on Saturday, Max also won the #1 Wisconsin Point and also one of the monthly drawings in the post and win contest.

After I win something very special, Dave always reminds me to buy a lottery ticket. So, I've got mine for the 130+ million. Haven't had any luck in this, but can't win w/o at least one ticket bought. Supports Michigan education too.

Good summary of the Regional drawings too Dave. I bought tickets for the others drawings too from Rip and Roy but no luck. Just more support for Toledo light. I was impressed with all the AP's in the drawing--that got my interest up!

As I was reading Dave's post on what Max did to be called "regional crimes" and finding out his name was called twice for prizes, I thought Dave was going to say Max stuffed the entry box with only his name and eventually got caught. Good to hear that wasn't the case.

Congratuations Max on your lucky day !!! applaud
