So far, it looks like it might be rainy for the Door County weekend. How cold does it feel being by the water? Do you need warm coats?

We have been in the 80's this past week. I'm not ready to go back to cold temps. eek

Gosh darn, it better not r...I'm not even going to say it.

Lorie, I would dress in layers. Perhaps a short sleeve T-shirt with a sweatshirt on top, and perhaps a light rain jacket. That way you can always remove layers. Lake Michigan is only in the high 40s for water temperature and if there is a breeze off the Lake, it is usually 10 degrees air temp cooler than the air itself. It will feel more like 15 degrees cooler. The Green Bay side of Door County will probably be a little warmer because it is sheltered with shallower water.

Hope that helps!

On the Island Clipper, plan to bring your winter coat or a coat with a removable liner. Start with a t-shirt as the bottom layer because it can get warm on land on Rock Island and be very cold out on Lake Michigan. Wear a sweatshirt or sweater on top of the tshirt. Bring light gloves or mittens. A throw away poncho would be good and/or a raincoat. Be prepared for all types of weather and bring a bag to put clothes in when de-layered. Also, warm socks and hiking shoes would be good. If it rains, a poncho over the raincoat works well to protect the camera. A baseball cap also helps protect the camera.

Then, listen to the weather reports and see what one actually needs to bring.

The last time I went on the Island Clipper trip during the Walk in May, it was cold in the morning when we left, very cold on Lake Michigan, a little warmer once we reached the Bay of Green Bay, and very warm hiking on Rock Island. I didn't start the trip wearing my winter coat liner, but put it on once we were over water. On Rock Island I was comfortable with the t-shirt and jeans and those people who wore turtle necks were very warm and uncomfortable. Then on the return trip, it got cold again over water and I ended up putting everything back on including the winter coat and liner.

Current forecasts shows lows in the upper 40's and highs in the mid to upper 60's. Unfortunately, living up here that means nothing unless you factor the wind in. If there's a nice 15mph wind blowing off the lake, you could need a snowsuit laugh . Layering indeed is the only way to go, especially on the boat. I'm just praying we don't get rain, especially the thunderstorms that rolled through for an hour this morning.

Winter coat? No way am I bringing a winter coat. I've had enough of that item! I.O. checked the oil level today. He estimates we're down to 1/5th of capacity and our high here today was 52. I was out washing screens in the wind and rain today. We northeasterners are pretty tough! smile

It snowed in Madison Wisconsin last Sunday May 2nd. There were huge fluffy flakes. The accumulation was 1.2 inches. I was out driving in it. At times it was near white out conditions.

Please think Summer! We're tired of the cold and wet weather. As a matter of fact, today May 9TH is the latest snowfall I remember. It was in 1977 when we experienced somewhere around 7-10 inches of wet heavy snow and it broke off many a tree top because all the leaves were out on those trees. The heavy snow also bent the frame on the canvas roof I had on the boat we owned at that time. Snow one day, then summer the next!
