There are several people who expressed interest in touring with our group on Sunday May 16th during the Door County Lighthouse Walk.

If people want to have a chance to climb Cana Island's tower, we will need to go there first. If it doesn’t take too long at Cana Island lighthouse, next we can go to Baileys Harbor range lights and Old Baileys Harbor for some quick photos.

Then it is on to Eagle Bluff, where we will need to car pool in Wisconsin cars if possible, so we don’t need to spend too much money on state park stickers. If everyone brings a sack lunch, we can eat at Eagle Bluff while others tour.

Next, we will go to Sherwood Point. This is the first year that the inside of Sherwood Point lighthouse will be open to tour.

The last lights we will visit will be at Sturgeon Bay Canal Station.

The Lighthouse Walk is over at 4:00 p.m. but our group has been invited to go to the Door Peninsula Winery for a tour and a chance for someone in our group to win a door prize. They are open until 6:00 p.m.

Door Peninsula Winery http://www.dcwine.com/

Please let me know who is interested in going along with our car caravan tour of lights.

Please also let me know if you are interested in going to the Door Peninsula Winery at 4:30 p.m. so that I can give them an idea on the number of people planning to tour and wine taste.

I would love to join your caravan, but Thad and I will be on the 10AM Fish Creek boat tour. I am pretty sure we will be back around Noon, becasue they have another trip at 1:00 PM. I really would like to see Shorewood Point and then go out to Cana and MAYBE, get a chance to climb the tower. In which order do you think we should do these? Cana or Shorewood first? Maybe we can catch up with the group later in the afternoon.

Suzanne, I'm sure you know the best route to take on Sunday to see the land based lights so may follow along with your group. Don't know about the winery though, kind of hard to know right now if I'd be up for that. Wine is ok but you know what my preferred beverage is! smile

AK and I would like to caravan along with all of you on Sunday. We are staying over Sunday night, so all day is free. The Cana tower climb is high on my priority list (right after taking possesion of my HL Baileys Harbor set) for the weekend.

Please count us in on the winery tour also.

Suzanne,

Maybe I missed it, but what time does the Sunday walk start and where are you planning for folks to gather? I'd love to join you. And Lighthog, you are more than welcome to my share of wine. Too bad we'e not a little closer to Milwaukee. A couple of beers would be nice.

Gee, I wonder if Suzanne set up the winery visit based on the last Wacko outing to involve visits to not one, but two wine tasting rooms. (After our LI North Shore adventure.

NICE ONE Dave laugh

By the way, I have a van that will seat 3-4 more than what I have planned for already if anyone cares to ride along. We will have a designated driver on board too wink
Otherwise, did Suzanne suggest walkie talkies?
I'm not using my cell phone on this trip! I got over $200.00 in roaming charges on the Florida trip!

Geez Dave... John is in all but one of the pictures enjoying the wine tasting. I guess that shows why he is ready to sign-up for the Door Peninsula Winery.

Pam...John and I will have a small rental car and would love to join up if you still have room. Otherwise, we'll be happy to follow along behind. wink

Inside the truck or in the bed? After John spends all that time at the winery, he may prefer the bed of the truck. . . .

Hey...I just traded the truck in for the new van. We can watch videos, dvd's, and as for the bed...yes, I have one of those, we can always accommodate! :p

Sunday Lighthouse Walk hours are 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

I think we should meet at 8:00 a.m. at the Birchwood parking lot since it is at the intersection of highway 42 and 57. We will take Hwy 57 to Baileys Harbor to board the bus to Cana Island. We want to get there early to make sure we all get on the first bus.

Oh yes, if you have walkie talkies, please bring them along. We will use them to communicate car to car.

Canalover - I would suggest going to Cana first after your boat trip if you want to go to Cana Island and try to climb the tower and then to Sherwood Point. Doing this, you will probably miss us at Sherwood Point but might be able to catch us at Canal station or meet us at the winery. If you went to Sherwood Point first, you would have the best chance to catch up with us, but you would miss the opportunity to see and/or climb Cana. Of course you could always visit Cana Island on Monday during their normal operating hours, but I don't think the tower will be open.

Count us in for the whole day. The winery is a great place, have stopped for many "samples" in the past.

Mombo, I also prefer your choice of beverage, and for that I suggest at some point we stop here:

Shipwrecked Micro Brewery

Suzanne,
Thad and I will catch up with everyone at the winery. I do not think we will make it to the canal station, but we are going to try to see it. Cana is a big deal to us so we will stop there first (Thad proposed to me there! smile )

I also wanted to recomend something to everyone that is going and who has a sweet tooth. Door County Ice Cream Factory has the BEST ice cream I have ever had. They have locations in Sister Bay (right on the edge of town arcoss the street from the Christmas shop the Tannebaum) and the other location in Egg Harbor. laugh

Shipwrecked is one of the places I looked at for our dinner during the HL Mini-event. Sadly, they were too small for our group.

Canalover - Do you know if the ice cream place is open mid-May. I know Wilsons usually isn't open that early in the season. Wilsons are famous for their location and their ice cream sundaes.

I know a place in Door County that has fantastic hamburgers, but they only have about 8-10 tables. They can't serve too many people at once unless it is warm enough to sit at the tables outside.

Hi Suzanne,

Carol & I will be staying at the Birchwood and will plan on accompanying the caravan on Sunday. Not sure if we'll have the Taurus or Explorer during this time but, either way, would have room for a couple passengers.

Suzanne,
I will call up to the Door County Ice Cream shop to see when they open. I am pretty sure they are open at least on the weekends in May. I will be really sad if they are closed! That is a must have each time I go up there!! smile
I will place another post after I call.
The Sister Bay location would have enough room for all of us.

Canalover -

I know the ice cream shop in Fish Creek near the entrance to Peninsula State park is usually open during the Lighthouse Walk. They make a delicious Door County sundae - vanilla ice cream, warm cherries in sauce, with fudge topping and pecans.

I was all for that place, until I was there last summer. They run this big thing about it being "home-made", they talk about it being made from scratch, its legendary. So as I am waiting patiently for my praline pecan cone, they open the freezer door. And as I gasped to see that they use the same ice cream mix (or a variation of) that Culvers and Dairy Queen uses. At that point it became just another ice cream shop that charges way to much for a cone.

On a side note. I have entertainment book coupons for Buy 1 Admission Get 1 (Up to 3 for each coupon) Free Admissions to the Door County Maritime Museums @ Sturgeon Bay, Gills Rock and Cana Island and also for the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc. If anybody has a use for these, please let me know and I can mail them out so you can use them, or I will have them with me at Birchwood when I arrive Friday afternoon...

Suzanne, do you have to have tickets if one is making rounds of the lights on Thursday and Friday? Also, if I stop at Sherwood and take shots of the grounds, will I need a ticket to walk on the grounds?

I just got off the phone with the Door County Ice Cream Factory and they will be open the weekend of the walk, but just the Sister Bay location. Friday and Saturday they will be open until 9:00 PM and Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday until 8:00 PM. Even though another post said that the ice cream isn't all homemade, it is still really good and they have some unique flavors that I haven't seen elsewhere (ie deaths door, fish boil, and chambers island)

Canalover,
I guess that's what makes us all unique!! We wouldn't all like the same thing, then we would be standing in very long lines to get ice-cream.

Thank you for your efforts in finding out the days and store hours for us. As for me, I like turtle sundaes, so wherever I go, they better help me out or I'll have to find a Culvers someplace!

In friendship,

Pam

Jen - Sherwood Point grounds are NOT normally open to the public. It is Coast Guard property and they use it as a place to live. During the Walk, the grounds are open to the public on Saturday and Sunday and one needs a Walk ticket to go on the grounds on those days. This is part of what makes the Door County Lighthouse Walk special - access to lights that are not normally open to the public. They do not want you on the grounds at any other time.

The lights that are open on days other than the lighthouse walk are: Cana, Eagle Bluff and Pottawatomie. These are museums. You can walk the grounds at Baileys Harbor Range Lights. You can get photos off the Coast Guard property of Sturgeon Bay Canal Station and the pier light.

Count us in on the lighthouse tour for Sunday. smile The winery tour sounds like fun. If it's anything like the one on Long Island laugh count us in for that one too. We have some radios that we can bring for communication between the cars.

Carol & I plan to leave for Door County this coming Tuesday AM. We will do some lighthousing from Chicago up to Manitowoc and also around Lake Winnebago before arriving at the Birchwood Lodge in Sister Bay some time on Friday.

We will plan on joining in with the caravan for the Sunday tour of lights .... will be driving our Taurus and will have room for several passengers if anyone wants to consolidate. Will stay once again at the Birchwood Sunday night and head for home Monday morning. Plan on driving at present. Looked at possibility of taking the Badger across the pond, but from what I saw it didn't leave Manitowoc until about 2:00 pm. 4 hour crossing time and the 1 hour time change would get us to Ludington at about 7:00 PM EDT and still have a drive across Michigan to get home. frown frown frown
