A little birdie told me this will be the first regional event:
Mt. Carmel Hall
Berkeley, New Jersey
(added 11/9 - correct spelling of Berkeley and the Hall)

Directions:
Coming from NYC area traveling west:

Take route 78 West to Exit 43. (Berkeley Heights New Providence Exit). Bare
right on diamond Hill Road. Follow for 1.5 miles (road changes name to Union
Ave.) to end. Make left on Springfield Ave. Continue for 1.5 miles make a
right on River Road (the first street past Berkeley Florist) The Club is on
the left.

Coming from the Penn. area traveling East:

Take route 78 to exit 40. Make a left at top of exit ramp onto Hillcrest
Road. Continue on through blinking light baring SLIGHTY left to end. Make a
right on Valley Road. Follow Valley (road changes name to Springfield) for
1.5 miles. Make a left on River Road. The first left past Berkeley Plaza.

Route 78 intersects route 287 and runs directly from Newark Airport.

I guess I have another date to circle on my calendar.

I'll have to put in for that day off.

That's only an hour and a half from me. So, if all goes well I'll be there.

Bob, according to my map Springfield and River road run parallel to each other. I do find a Club Road off of River Road that only runs for a block. So what's the name of the Club?

CR512 is the same as Springfield.....

Bob,

It's nowhere near any part of the Jersey Shore.

It's in North Jersey west of the Newark/ Elizabeth area. About an hour from the northern shore areas.

By my Streets and Trips, it appears to be about 20 miles as the crow files from Manhattan and 35 miles from Navesink.

Hmmm Navesink, Sandy Hook, Coney Island, Roosevelt Island, Jeffrey's Hook and lots more. Do I feel a bus tour coming on?

Without me searching the forums, isn't there some sort of event in Atlantic City in April, 2002?

John, on your bus trip don't forget Staten Island light, you also be going right great beds light and Romer Shoals off shore near by. Staten Island light is extremely residential up a steep narrow road, but I am sure you'll find a bus driver up to the task.

I, personally, would LOVE the opportunity to see some of the NY/NJ lights "up close". I have done a bunch of trips to see the CT and RI lights (and some in MA), as well as the ones on the outer banks of NC...but I've never made it to that area.

John,

As the crow flies is not how the bus rides.

It might only be about 20 miles to Manhattan, but it is not a quick trip. The same goes for getting to Navesink- it's about 45 miles and an hour or so drive.

Your right there's a great number of lights in the area- and a great number of cars going to and fro beteen the areas you'd want to get too.

Staten Island Lighthouse is a great one- the effect of the houses around it is different. Mark is right it's a real trip to get up to- even with a map it's hard to find and, but worth the effort.

Maybe you could do the 5 Boroughs trip- Jeffrey's Hook, Roosevelt Island, Weed Battery, Staten Island, New Dorp, Coney Island, Romer's Shoal,West Bank,Old Orchard, Robbins Reef, Great Beds and Shirin could lead us to a view of Prince's Bay.

Thanks for the ideas, Mark and Dennis. I've seen Romar Shoals up close in a boat -- I doubt that you could get any decent photo of it from shore without a long, long lens.

You could have gotten a decent shot when you were at Sandy hook.

There's an observation deck at the end of the hook near the Coast guard base just behind one of the old Batteries that looks out into the New York Harbor with Romer Shoals right in front of you.

In fact you can see the Lighthouse from the Lantern room of Sandy Hook. It's the best view of all the lights that are visible from the Lighthouse.

I'm going there tomorrow and I'm taking my son's camera with me . I'll try and get a shot of it from both locations if the weather coperates.

Then all I have to do is figure out how to post pictures again.

Ah, Princes Bay, now that was a fun one to try and find. I circled the area for over an hour before I got fed up with making u-turns all over the place and looked for the closest beach. Once there I found the skeleton tower that has replaced the light which is up on a bluff. So, up the bluff I went. Others had done it in the past so there was a semi-difficult path to get up the bluff. Once up the bluff, it was just a short walk to the light which is residential and off limits. The trees block your view, but you could just barely make out the Vigrin Mary statue that has replaced the lantern room on the light. It didn't help that the sky was as white as anything that day so my pictures didn't turn out so well. Also, that was almost 2 years ago and my camera equipment and my photography skills have improved since then. But, here are shots of the current tower and the lighthouses.
