Would like to go but once again we'll be gone. Have a trip to China scheduled for mid-June to early July.

You all thought I forgot about things, didn't you?

Well, thngs are coming together pretty nicely to this point. The weekend (June 24-25) seems to be a workable one. Boat is on hold for us, buses are being reserved. January 2 I will be going to Norfolk for a couple of days to do site work and visit the potential hotel. Pending a good site visit, I will have details ready to post shortly after that. Then the registrations can begin!

Dave - Are your plans to have it a package deal like at the Reunion(tours, boat ride, hotel, eating) or will you be able to get a place to sleep and eat on your own? I have friends up there that I might consider staying with and I would like to know if there is going to be an option.

Rich, no final decision at this point, but my thinking is that I will separate the activities and hotel.

Dave,

Even though I'll probaly use your suggestions for both it probably would be best not to link it as one take it or leave it package.

Just my opinion and or vote whichever you prefer. laugh

Dave,

I agree with Dennis, especially because Stan and I will probably make the stay an extended one, using the RV as our "hotel" and travel by rented car to wherever and meet up with everyone else and/or strike out on our own.

Because of various travel plans and agendas, it seems that the more options to join in (or opt out) the better. That being said, I realize that Dave doesn't want to have to bring a CPA along to keep track of things. It would be nice to be able to take the boat on Saturday, without having to commit to the bus on Sunday if you have to leave to make it back to work on Monday. Perhaps some form of advance payment to Dave for some options would help him make his minimum commitments.

What you all need to understand is that the more options there are the more you will pay per option. I would say the weekend will probably be a package - if you want to sell off part of your package, that will be your choice.

Should I decide to not "force" the hotel choice, and you choose to stay elsewhere (which is fine), you will probably pay a small additional fee to help pay for things like meeting / hospitality room at the hotel which is subsidized by people staying at the hotel. Anytime you stage a large gathering, hotels look at the number of rooms you will use when they decide what to charge for a meeting room - don't use enough rooms, and the meeting room gets charged not comped.

All this said, nothing is finalized at this point. As I said earlier, that will happen after I make a site visit and meet with the various "players" that will be involved.

Dave,

Totally understandable- sometimes you have to pay for convenience and sometimes you get a deal to make things convenient.

I'm sure most will be happy with whatever you decide- and those that aren't can choose to do it thier own way or your way or no way. laugh

Dave and Dennis,

Package deals always cost less money. Eliminate one or more of the pieces naturally increases the price to accept the rest.

It would have to be an individual decision. I just hope that we have a huge turnout.

I'm looking forward to the concept...hope I can make it. As maybe mentioned before, I'm thinking of a "lighthousing week," going sailing to Newport right after school gets out (19 June if we don't have any more snow days), take three days to do the sail, come back on the 23rd, and head right down to VA. Five days of pure lighthousing!

And I could drive down there, too...so if you see the grey GMC Yukon XL (replacement for the Landy, which we still have sitting in the driveway, possibly awaiting a conversion into the first-ever Land Rover Discovery pickup truck) barreling down the highway, change lanes ASAP...in fact, get off the highway at the next exit. eek

Greg,

I'm sure the Virginia State Police will be more than happy to greet you on the way down. MD Police, also.

Just look at this way, you would get meals and lodging free of charge. laugh

Yeah, Greg! Free lodging and meals. We'd prefer to see you at the Forums Reunion, though. Dave, whatever you can work out is fine with me; of course, I prefer a package deal because the trip becomes more affordable and because all arrangements are made for me. Don't have friends or relatives in the area, will be flying in, and don't intend to rent a car.

Dave, mark Joe & I down on your list of those interested as well. This sounds great!! Can't wait to hear the outcome of plans and prices. Will start saving now so that we can afford to join in. Don't know where we will be working come June. But we will make arrangments to be there no-matter where we are working.

I know that I sent Dave an email, when this idea first surfaced, letting him know that MJ and I were interested. Ron & Shirley Drummer also expressed their interest in an email to Dave. I just thought that I should post this as a reminder that the four of us are still interested in the details once they are finalized.

Dave does such a super job of putting these trips together and we always have a wonderful time seeing all of you lighthouse lovers.

Count us in!!

Dave, I just found out about this trip from Fran. I'm just starting to make my travel plans for the new year and you can count me in. I'll probably drive down with my rv trailer and stay in one of the many campgrounds in the area. Maybe make it an extended stay.

Yes, but I wouldn't have without your help. Now that I'm starting to be a little more comfortable navigating things I'll probably be posting more. I just have to find the time to get on the site a little more often.

Saint Dave will be traveling to Hampton Roads in the next few days to check out the facilities and opportunities for our proposed gathering next June.

Here's wishing him a safe journey and that all the details work out on our behalf.

Hey Dave,
This really sounds like a great trip and it sounds like it is getting bigger and bigger! We, too, are interested and like the Brady's and the Watterson's would plan a vacation around this great venture--keep us posted. I'm not sure how far we are from that area now that we are Florida residents but it can't be any farther than it would be from Indiana. It would be wonderful to see everyone again.

Details will be posted later this week so stay tuned.

With that, I'm going to close this thread that if not the longest in history is one of the longest ones.
