On October 14th, Sue Brady will have a lumpectomy. At my request, she prepared this information for all the women who frequent these Forums:

Quote:

The Good, Bad and the Great!

The Good news is that annual mammograms do a wonderful job in catching breast cancer early in its course when treatment is highly effective.

The Bad news is that I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.

The Great news is that the mammogram caught my cancer in its earliest stage (in its site of origin before it spread) and I will recover completely after treatment. I will have a lumpectomy on 10/14 followed by 6 weeks of radiation therapy.

The message to all of the women out there is to get those annual mammograms..... they may save your life!!! Men - make certain the women in your life get their mammograms!

Here are some facts:

During 2002 an estimated 203,500 new cases of breast cancer are expected to occur among women in the United States. One woman in eight either has or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime.

If detected early, the five-year survival rate exceeds 95%. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month encourages all women to recognize the importance of early breast cancer detection by participating in National Mammography Day on October 18, 2002.

Visit the site http://www.nbcam.org/ for more information.

An estimated 13 million women in the U.S. are 40 years old or older and have never had a mammogram. Visit the "Breast Cancer Site" below and click on the button to help provide free mammograms to women who need our help.

http://www.thebreastcancersite.com

Please remember Sue and Paul Brady in your prayers and thoughts.

Sue I will remember you in my prayers! smile

And yes Mammograms are good to have if you have health insurance that will cover it! For those like me who don't, that's just wishful thinking! frown

Sue and Paul, I will certainly be thinking of you both during the weeks ahead and wish you all the best for a complete recovery. Thanks for having John post this important message.

Stephanie, call your local county health department to see if they have a clinic where you can get a mammogram! I believe they have such things here. Don't run the risk of being that 1 in 8!

Stephanie:

Go to www.google.com and search for "free mammogram" + the name of your state. you may need to do some searching on the results. I believe that there is a program in Mobile.

I hope that all of the men who participate in the forums read Sue's message, also...

I have been a photographer all of my life and have worked at WISH TV8 in news for the last 30 years... and the single most important thing I have done professionally was a hour long show about Breast Cancer that I photographed, edited and co-produced with our female co-anchor at the time, who's mother had died from Breast Cancer.

We profiled four different women who had Breast Cancer in the show. They were of different ethnicities and spanned a wide range of age groups, from 22 yrs to almost 80. We worked with the local Methodist Hospital on the project and they used the show as an informational tape for women who had been diagnosed with Breast Cancer. The show aired four times on the station. The second time was in prime time during a ratings period. It was one month after it had aired the first time, because the response was so great to the show. It then aired once each of the next two years.

As I said before it is the most important work I have done, and just maybe it was to sort of pre-ordained to help me know what Sue is about to through... A lot of technological improvements in the diagnoses and treatment of Breast Cancer have happened since then but being informed about Breast Cancer is still the most important weapon.

The title of the Show was almost as an important message as the information that was in the show....

"I'm Still Me"

and Sue's still Sue

and Most Important of all... I Still Love Her!

Paul

If you have your health, you have everything. I am a cancer survivor and I know the importance of early detection of cancer. The earlier the Doctors find it, the better the prognosis. It is of the utmost importance that everyone visit their Doctor at least once a year.

Another procedure that everyone seems to dread is a colonoscopy. Most every Doctor recommends this procedure when you turn 50, or earlier if you're having problems. My sister didn't have the procedure until she was 58. They found colon cancer. Had she had the test eight years earlier, she wouldn't have had an eight day stay in the hospital and six months of chemo.

A colonoscopy does not hurt. You don't feel any pain. Like a mammogram, it very well could save your life.

Are thoughts and prayers are with you, Sue & Paul.

Sue and Paul,
Please know that my thoughts and prayers will be with you both in the coming days. Like so many other times of our lives, it is so comforting to have loved ones close by and friends who are thinking and praying during the procedure. Thank the good Lord above, Sue, that you have been faithful in getting a Mammo every year.

Dear Sue and Paul,

What you have together is lots of love and teamwork!

My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1980. Mom has had her ups and downs with cancer and other health issues since then, and she is a fighter, and going strong at the age of 81.

I was 30 when I had my first mammogram, and have had many since then. After I turned 40 eek I have been having mammograms yearly. Next one coming up in a short time. This is something that I have to do, for myself, and my family.

Will offer prayers for you and your family thru our Prayer Chain!

Take one day at a time, and hold on to each other!

God Bless!

Mary

Many of us have often said that the best thing about these forums are the friendships that have developed over the past few years since we came together. Paul and Sue Brady have certainly developed into close personal friends and our thoughts and prayers are with them as they go through this together. Hang in there guys-this too shall pass.

Just to let you know that I had a meeting at church tonight and your name along with Paul was added to our prayer chain. God does not give anything that we, along with him, cannot handle. You two will be in our prayers and I just ask God that if it be his will, he would lay his healing hands on you and remove all of the cancer from your body. God bless you both.

Sue and Paul,

Jeff and I will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. You are correct in saying that women need to have annual mammograms. We are only given one life and need to take the tests that help to keep you alive and healthy.

Keep up the postive attitude even when you don't feel well because it can't hurt.

Sue & Paul, my wife and I will share a prayer for you. My wife, Joyce went thru two breast cancer operations in 2000, one in April and the other in August. It was a rough year for both of us. Our lives have changed forever, but don't let it dominate your lives. My wife will forever be "high risk" and is still on chemotherapy. Catching it early is the key to success and a continuing happy life. I have always told my wife I will always love her as much or as little as there is of her, she is still the same person .

God Bless,

Geo H.

I just spoke with Sue. She is home, her operation having been done on an out patient basis. She sounded tired and is feeling the after effects from the anesthetic but is optimistic as her doctor told her that he was sure that he had removed all the cancer.

Your prayers and continued support will, no doubt, help the Bradys during Sue's recovery and further treatment.

Sue, my birthday was 10/14 (yes and I've been circling at 39 for a long time!) and the best birthday present I could get would be to know that everything went well with the lumpectomy and that you've recovered completely!

Sue and Paul. I'm sorry I missed out on the news until now, I have been away from the Forums for quite awhile. I'm so glad they caught the cancer early on, and am very happy to here the positive response from the surgery. You both are great friends to Becki and I, and we pray that the news stays positive for many years to come. Sue, you hang in there and stay positive. You need all that strength to keep that husband of yours in check!
