Just read about the earthquake in the NE this morning. Were any of you, who frequent this forum, affected?

According to my people at GHQ in Framingham, their "911" boards lit up like a Christmas tree right after the quake. No injuries or damage was reported..."back to you, Chet!"

It was felt here at 6:52am. I didn't get up until 7:15 and when I did I.O. said, "I think we had an earthquake. The windows shook and your HL's vibrated." I asked him if he was prepared to save them!

A while later my daughter called and asked if we heard about it. Up to then I was beginning to wonder if it was just a rumbling thunder. It woke her up at 5:30am. Must tune into the 6pm news to see what they have to say.

Think it's the first one felt here since l983. That one woke me a bit as the bed shook and I could here things rattling on the dresser.

Some of the damage that was shown on TV looked pretty scary...glad to know that none of our other folks were "shaken up".

So glad to hear that everyone is safe, and the lighthouses are ok....

Did your beer get all "shook up"?

Plattsburg, Ny - Derith.
It rattled the handles on our chest of drawers.
HL barely moved I take that back. Did not move at all - dust marks intact. lol

I guess I was wondering about the folks in the upper regions of NY...Bob. Not ever having been in an earthquake, when the news says it was felt as far south as Maryland, I take them literally.

You're right Derith, local damage of roads in that area looked pretty scary. And for us to be rattled awake so far away, is something. We had a similar quake a few years back (Mombo says 1983) that was our first that I remember. I did not mean to make light of your concern. The weather channel had a report on the richter scale ratings, saying that each additional point is 10 times greater (expontentially) than the previous point. So that 5 is 10x greater than 4, which was 10x greater than 3, etc. So a 5 would be 100x greater than a 3. (They had bar charts so it was easier to see than explain.) Since ours was 5.1, I think I can now relate to size of some of the west coast earthquakes that may happen in the future.
Interesting to know that after the last earthquake, the newspapers showed a fault line that ran down the center (N to S) of NYC.

This quake and the '83 quake were both 5.1's. Our paper reported yesterday that there had been a couple others in more recent years in the 2.something range. I.O. said we are about 235 miles from this last one, as the crow flys. Here's the latest on the damage:
http://syracuse.com/news/poststandard/index.ssf?/base/news-0/1019466974155970.xml

These quakes were in the Adirondack Mt. region where there is some sort of fault line. One theory, not proven, is that movement is still occurring from the end of the last ice age which formed the mountains (slightly before my prom picture cave drawings.)

During the '83 quake a couple of friends from work were camping and fishing near the epicenter at Blue Mountain Lake. They didn't even feel it, although I believe this was perhaps because they'd had too much to drink the night before! The kids and I had been there just the week before. There's a great museum at Blue Mountain Lake, The Adirondack Museum. When we were there in '83 they had a working seismograph you could look at. When I.O. and I were there in '98 I couldn't find it.

Here's the history of some of NY's earthquakes:

We felt it here in Kendall,NY with floors and walls all doing a little dance for a few seconds. Kendall is northwest of Rochester about 30 miles and the event made for an early wakeup call with no damage!

We were at the gym Saturday morning and didn't feel anything. While at breakfast...we were told about it. My parents said that there was a really loud noise -- not much shaking but Molly (their dog) was tweeking! We were just wondering if our lighthouses did some moving -- got home and everything was fine at home!
