The Lighthouse Depot catalog arrived today with a beautiful photograph by Gary Martin of South Haven Lighthouse encrusted in ice.

Yes, I received mine last week too, very nice picture. I assume that was taken during a past winter since we have had an exceptionally warm winter and I don't think there could have been that much ice yet this winter.

Thanks for the kudos guys. Greatly appreciated. That photo was shot last year between Christmas and New Year's Day. Cold last year and plenty of ice - a balmy -15 or so and calm that day as I recall. A whole lot better than about 3 days earlier when it was -25 out there at SH with a wind chill of -55. I was amazed that day that the lithium batteries in my camera kept on ticking! Supposed to be a storm front and cold again this week... maybe some more lighthousecicles in my future!

Gary also had 3 other Lighthouse Depot catalog covers during the end of last year as well!

I thought that photo looked familiar in my mailbox. Congratulations Gary! Great shot! How do you submit your photos to Lighthouse Depot?

Hi Becki and thanks!

LH Digest has an annual photo contest, the deadline for submitting entries was Dec 31. They publish the winning photos in five categories, which always seem to include best daylight, best lighted lens, best foreign, and one or two other categories which vary from year to year. The "other" category this year was best storm-swept lighthouses, which given my fondness for photographing during the gales that sweep across Lake Michigan was the perfect category as far as I was concerned!

The link below will take you to the November, 2001 contest announcement to give you an idea of the rules, etc.

http://www.lhdepot.com/Digest/StoryPage.cfm?StoryKey=1174

Photographs submitted are considered for the contest and also for usage on the cover of the LH Depot catalog. As Terry noted, last year was a very good year for me in the LH Depot catalog cover sense.

You should give submitting images for the contest a try! You've got all summer to shoot and if you're going to Rosemont, you should either come east along the shore of Lake Michigan to shoot the lights here in SW Michigan or go north up to Door County, Wisconsin to shoot the 10 lights in DC and the numerous lights as you go north along the Wisconsin coast.

Good luck!
Gary

Thanks, Digger! Not sure what it's doing today down your way, but it's snowing like crazy here in Kazoo! They're talking snowfall in the 6-12 inch range today depending on where in western Michigan you hang your hat! Could end up seeming a whole lot more like winter by the end of the day. This may call for a trip to South Haven to get some snow photos, which I really haven't had a chance to shoot this year!

Gary
