In just over a week, I am headed from central NY to New Orleans with my 4-H Club and I am excited. In addition to see New Orleans (I have never been there!), I am going to be able to see Sabine Pass lighthouse on the Gulf of Mexico!!! My host has said that he has a volunteer that might be able to get me right across the bayou to see the light up close and personal. I can hardly wait!! I will tell you how it goes.

I will definately post pictures as I just love taking pictures!! Told the kids I "only" had 30 rolls of pictures for our trip this year. I posted another picture in the "Playroom" to see if I could make it work and I did!!

What a great opportunity!

Some day I will get to the rest of the gulf lights. I have seen many of Florida's gulf lights. But none of the others. So do take pictures.

Sabine Pass is a great lighthouse and hopefully Harbour Lights will make it some day! Getting close and taking some pictures is the next best thing! Have a great time! I would love to see this light and I'm jealous!!!!

I have to admit that I am intensely jealous of all you others who have seen some of the more beautiful lights. Since I am just new, I haven't seen too many out of my area (Great Lakes, ME, CT, MA, NJ, etc.)so I am glad that I am going to see a light a bit out of the way. I will definately share my pictures with the group!

Carol,

I was in New Orelans in November and managed to see several lights. Don't forget New Canal right there in NO. If they are taking you down to Sabine, that is a bit of a trip. Might want to try to get a look at Southwest Reef if you get to Morgan City. Drop me a note if you want some instructions on getting to other lights around Lake Ponchatrain. I just wish I was into lighthouses the 3+ years I commuted to New Orleans for the Navy. Oh well....

Our state 4-H does exchanges with Japan, have not seen one with another US state. Heather isn't too hepped on Japan, but she would jump at the chance to go to NO again!

Have a great trip,

Dave

I wish that I could see all the lights in the New Orleans area since I am going to be there but, unfortunately, my time is not my own and I consider myself lucky to see one. Most of the week will be spent with the group seeing lots of other things in the area. NEXT time I come to NO, I will definately try to see more of the lights. I can hardly wait to go and hopefully, the weather will cooperate.

Carol,

The bad news here is that NO can really leave a lot to be desired in the summer months. How do you feel about matching numbers for heat and humidity? (and not low ones...)

Have fun,

Dave

Well, I'm back and had a wonderful time in Louisiana but, bad news guys. We went down to Sabine Pass to see the light but couldn't get in!! It had been raining for days (and here they were thinking they might have a drought!) and the road was flooded so the caretaker locked the gate. We couldn't get back to the lighthouse and it was 4 miles away so we could only get pictures from a long distance. I was so bummed!! I might never get down to see it again. But I had a great time there anyway and saw nice things.

It's a shame you couldn't get close. This is one that I would like to see in the future and maybe Harbour Lights will make a figurine of it in some day. It's design is so unique! It would be great to see it restored to it's orginal beauty!

No, I am afraid taht there aren't any lighthouses on Bourbon St. - at least, not that I saw. It is way too noisy on Boubon St. for any self respecting lighthouse.
