... when it's someone's birthday or anniversary? When someone needs prayers or marks some other milestone?

Well basically they have to tell someone else - who then posts this information here. If you've got something to celebrate or are having a hard time, just email or IM anyone here and they'll pick up and post it here.

Heck, you can even post your OWN upcoming event date! Everyone has birthdays, most of us have anniversaries. Most everyone with grandchildren or children have something in their lives they'd like to celebrate.

Just do it! Don't be shy.

I wondered how the birthdays, anniversaries were posted. I thought a while back that we e-mailed those dates to the cruise director. They in turn had their list & posted the appropriate dates.

I vaguely remembered doing that several years ago. But if I did all our important dates have come & gone several times with no notice.

I, for one, would never post my birthday expecting greetings. However, I would post someone elses.

I believe a lot of people on the forums are not going to e-mail someone and ask it to be posted that their birthday is in a few days. But if their was a one time master list created more people would send that info & be pleasantly surprised when their day is recognized further down the line. Just my opinion,

Your memory is correct - at one time people were asked to mail their dates to the cruise director. People acquire dates in lots of ways - sometimes a person mentions it is their birhtday soon in another thread, someone picks up on it and posts. Sometimes friends tell each other they have an important date coming up and the thread gets started by a friend. Same goes when you are going thru a tough period or would like your forum friends to keep you in their prayers - an IM or email is exchanged with a friend who then may post a message.

While many are shy about calling attention to themselves, it is fun to get good wishes from friends all over the country. Of course, there is also the opportunity for a good natured dig at the person - to me a sign of the great friendships that have formed because of these forums.
