I was extremely happy to see that Harbour Lights has announced the Nantucket Lightship as one of the second-half releases for 2003. This is another example of HL listening to their collector's requests. This also proves that the Anchor Bay line is still with us and we can probably expect more AB's in the future.

THANK YOU, HARBOUR LIGHTS!

I'm glad that they got back into lightships. Even though I like the Coast Guard cutters/boats I feel that lightships are more appropriate to the HL/AB line.

It certainly is a nice one and I may add that it will be the first lightship in my collection. Looking forward to getting this one. Now to find and clear a spot for it.

Looks like I will have to get my request in to my dealer for the Nantucket also, but I was really hoping for the Mackinaw. Maybe next year.

I have made arrangements with my dealer to get
the Nantucket. Next, maybe the Swiftsure. It is tied up at the Maritime Museum on Lake Union in Seattle.

"Ask and thou shall receive..."

Put your requests in the "Wish Forum" and drum up some support. I campaigned for the Nantucket LS for quite some time and my wish came true. Harbour Lights listens to their collectors.

If the Nantucket LS sells out quickly, I'm sure other lightships will follow. If the Nantucket LS turns out to be a slow seller, then the wait for the next LS might be a little longer.

I saw it about a month ago - this is the one that is privately owned. Yay for HL!

Hey Roxie, ...Is that the one that was refurbished in Wareham then moved to Nantucket Harbor?

Yes it is. I have photos of it when it was being restored someplace I'll have to post. When I went to Nantucket last month the folks over there didn't care too much for the fact that it wasn't "restored" and that it is a money maker for someone. I guess I see it two ways it was saved from rotting away, although I, too would have like to have seen it restored to it's original glory.

I intend to purchase this one!

And it will be my very first Anchor Bay...which means...I guess I need to go back and eventually pick up The Chesapeake at least.

Ah!...one purchase leads to another...and another!

The NELL folks saw this lightship in New Bedford last fall and say it was being refurbished there. Apparently it got around!

Yes, Mombo it did get around. It's more like a floating Inn now instead of a Lightship... Oh, did I mention that it was an exteremely EXPENSIVE Inn....

Hey Sue, ...There is more than one Nantucket Lightship. I saw the one in New Bedford right next to the USCG Station the same day I saw one in Wareham. The one that was in Wareham has been moved to Nantucket after being refurbished. I think the one in New Bedford might still be there, as well as another lightship with "New Bedford" on the side.

Hmmm, my four other LS and three other craft were all purchased for about that price... but came in a neat case! Where will I find a case?

When you find this one at your dealer, please post it here.

Yes indeed Bob. That "New Bedford" Nantucket is still there as is the New Bedford Lightship. So if the Golden's lightship is currently in Nantucket then the one in New Bedford has to be the WLV613.

So the question is, which one is the Anchor Bay modeled after??? To me they look identical.

They look identical to me too! John...do you happen to know which Nantucket Harbour Lights modeled their new Anchor Bay release from?

Thanks John!

It's become a real curiosity for me.

I'd also been trying to stay away from collecting Anchor Bay...but when this one was announced...well...I've just got to have Nantucket!

Then of course...I'll need to go back and at least pick up Chesapeake. You think it will stop there? Hu...mnnn!!

Oh, absolutely Portsmouth!

Particularly since the real thing sits practically in my back yard.

I had a chance to purchase both a few months back...and...passed it up! Can't believe I did that!

I bought the four older LS's on 'closeout' at 1/2 off or less... really spoiled me! Of course, the list on this case-less LS is ~ what I paid for at least one of my other ones, so it won't be a big shock. Now... what do I do for a case???

I had also emailed HL to ask which Nantucket Lightship they're producing. It's the LV112, the one scheduled to be on display at the National Lighthouse Museum.

Just to help clarify things.

The lightship that is currently in New Bedford is the Nantucket 1/WLV 612. That is the one that is owned by the Goldens who purchased it on ebay. I spoke with Art Motta who is the director of the New Bedford Waterfront Visitors Center and he confirmed this info. He stated that they must be having some further work done on it. He was unsure whether or not it ever made it to Nantucket.

The Nantucket 2/WLV 613 is also privately owned by a John Baker I believe. We think that one's in Wareham.

Now we were in Wareham but I didn't go looking for it as I thought it was the one we had just seen in New Bedford!

So I'm assuming that the one Roxie saw was the Nantucket 2, unless that one was off somewhere else and the Nantucket 1 was there a month ago!

This sure isn't easy. The only thing I know for sure now is that I've seen the Nantucket 1 twice now, once in Marina Bay, Quincy before it was sold and June 28th in New Bedford. And I have never seen the other two Nantucket lightships! eek

I just perchased my first coast guard ship, or ship of any kind this last weekend on a trip up the coast of Michigan. Now I see the pictures of the Nantucket, where I spent many vacations as a child. Oh boy. Perhaps I need a new cabinet for ships also! I need more wall space in my house!
This is getting more fun by the moment! Ships and the Navy were my first love as a child. Duh, how did I end up in the Army!! Just kidding! We have lots of Coast Guard and Navy represented in the family, too! All those beautiful lightships would look great alongside the pictures of all those guys in dungarees! smile

Let's add to the confusion...

I spoke with Harry Hines out at the "Benefit on the Block" today and asked him which Nantucket Lightship was used as the model for the upcoming release. He told me it was the LV612. He added that the LV612 was the only one that was actually the Nantucket Lightship. He further stated the others were only utilized as temporary markers off Nantucket while the 612 was out of service.

Now you know the rest of the story...(I think)

The home office says they are still scheduled for September and I was asked to also pass along to those who collect a certain # ship - that they contact their dealer to make those arrangements.

We're almost halfway through the month of September. Has anyone seen the new Nantucket Lightship at any dealers yet?

I'm getting anxious out here on the East Coast, where the weather has been nice but people, especially boaters, are wondering where Hurricane Isabel is going to go.

Out to sea, I hope! She's a biggee, Bob. My hope that it goes right out to sea! As for the Nantucket, I hope she sails in pretty soon. It's the only lightship I will have and I'm looking forward to getting it.

I journeyed to New Bedford yesterday to get a few new pics of Clark's Point Light at Fort Taber. It was an absolutely gorgeous day with temperatures in the mid 50's with a light SW wind. It actually felt like Spring.

Well anyways, after taking the pics of Clark's Point and a couple of distant shots of Butler Flats and Palmer Island Light, I drove over to the former USCG Base to see if the Nantucket Light Ship was still tied up there. Nay not so, gone!

I ran into a retiree from my job who introduced me to one of the members of the New Bedford PD Dive Team. They just had a meeting and were heading out when I spotted them. The Dive Team member told me the Nantucket had been moved over to Fairhaven by the owner and was no longer docked in New Bedford. Maybe on another day I'll head over to Fairhaven to see if I can find exactly where this Nantucket LS ended up.

One of the members of my Marine Unit told me the Nantucket LS that was refurbished in Wareham, Massachusetts, then moved to Nantucket Harbor, is now in Boston Harbor for the winter. He took a tour of the vessel and told me it was absolutely beautiful inside and out. He told me the owner gets "big bucks" to rent it out for parties. I guess you have to try to recover your investment any way you can.

OK, Bob, I don't know if you know this, but it may make you smack your head against the doorframe..Fairhaven is right over the river from New Bedford. On our big CT/RI/MA trip, we stayed at the Hampton Inn New Bedford-Fairhaven, so I assume that they are thought of as one big city, like Minneapolis-St. Paul. (Great Hampton Inn, BTW...the best one we've been to, and we've been to alot of them.)

Hi Seagirt, ...I was aware that Fairhaven was across the harbor, but I didn't know exactly where they may have tucked the Nantucket in. Unfortunately it isn't a sandy beach which runs for miles with no obstructions. It's probably over there somewhere where the public doesn't have a right of access. I'll pick another day when I have more time and I'll try to search it out. Later in the spring I will use my invite to hitch a ride on the New Bedford PD Dive boat and maybe get some closeup and different pics of the lights in the Harbor. I enjoy my little excursions along the coast!
