Three non-HL collectors have seen my Fresnel Lens on display in my main curio. All three asked the same two questions about the lens:

What is it?

Why doesn't it have a label on it telling what it is?

I stood back and took a look and thought how nice it would be to have a brass label on the wooden base of the FL. A nice engraved brass label noting the order of the lens.

Does anyone else feel this is a good idea? Could future FLs come with the brass label? Could HL make a label for the current FLs and make it available as a moderate cost to the collectors who have FLs?

Let your thoughts be known! I vote for a nice brass label similar to the ones that appear on the wooden base of the Anchor Bay boats. It could be self-adhesive so you could just press it on the current FLs.

Bob

You know what.......that would be a great idea. I have had a few people ask what it was as well. I wonder if HL could retrofit a label of some sort.

I think it's a great idea. Hopefully, it could be done after tne fact. Or at the very least planned for the rest of the series.

Great idea Bob!
I have had a few people ask me what it is also! They thought it was a neat item, but didn't have a clue of what it is! A plate of some kind would be a big help! I can see why people who know nothing about lighthouses would be confused as to what it is!

Well... here I go again... "Dare To Be Different Torchie"

I like the lens just as it is. I know what it is, and believe it or not, many (not all) non-collectors who have seen it knew as well. For those who didn't, I got the privilege to expound upon my vast knowledge about the lens. "What is it? Well... I'm so glad you asked..."

We posted this message back on October 28th and received no comments:

"Today we picked up both the Fresnel Lens and Sister Island from our dealer in Dallas. They were both well worth the wait.
On the Fresnel Lens, the flag number is on the bottom of the base and there is no reference to the edition size. A small plaque
on the side of the base with the flag number and edition size, (similar to Anchor Bay), would have been a nice touch. Maybe on
the next lens."

We just had our carpets cleaned and the cleaner said what a neat prism you have on the fireplace! Would be great to have a nice brass namplate.

I must agree with Tim. The fact that there is no label creates an opportunity to talk about the lens and the entire collection, and I'd be willing to bet if there WAS a label that said "Fresnel Lens", you'd still get a question - "What's a Fresnel Lens?"

What Mike said and Tim too!

Everything in this world doesn't need a sign on it. I work in Television News and I hate that we beat people to death with font! Let the picture tell the story and in this case study up or put the nice leaflet right next to the Fresnel and just hand it to the person to read about Fresnel Lenses. Of course, Bob this means you will have to remember which order lens this one is.... hint: if most people take off one of their shoes and their sock or hose and count the number of toes on that foot then it is.... a 5th odor lens!

I think it sounds like a great idea, but am I the only person that uses the "tent card" with all of my pieces?!?!?

LOL Paul... are you making references to that flat foot who started this thread? {G,D & R}

BTW Bob, you ol' storm trooper you. The base is actually a resin compound painted brown. FYI.

As I said last month in comments to Bill's review of the first fresnel model, "I'd like to have seen a small brass plate attached to the base describing the lens."

I'm inclined to agree w/ Paulie that 'not everything needs a sign' and I'm thoroughly delighted with the job HL has done in concept and execution. Though, imo, this piece would not be diminished in any way by a small brass plaque. But I vote against having animated gifs on the model - g,d,& r, :-).

If HL takes my suggestion and model the next lenses in the line after real ones, the plaque could state the name of the hosting lighthouse.

I don't think it needs a brass name plate. Bill Younger has to have somewhere to sign this lens. The place where you would put the name plate is where he signs the piece with his special gold pen.

Besides you can explain all about the lens if someone you have at your home doesn't know what they are looking at.

you're not alone gebbyk- I use the tent cards with all my harbour lights pieces. But for the record- I really could live with it either way- with or without a brass name plate. Though, I think a brass name plate would be pretty classy looking- but really the piece is classy already!

I don't really need a brass plate with mine because my base is still in the box and the lens sits on a new base which has a beautiful rotating light with changing colors that shine up through the lens and reflect off the prisms.I really love to watch it this way.But to each his own, looking forward to more lenses especially a nice first order.Bill O'Brien oseabee

Does anyone have any information on "the next lens" in the series? What, when, style etc.

I asked Bill at St.Augustine about more lenses and his answer there will be more.
Maybe we will know more after Chicago.
