As you have seen, I have been naming my paintings as I finish them. I have found that finding an appropriate name is harder than the actual painting. I have came up with an idea to get everyone involved and help me out at the same time. let me know what you think.

Starting with the newest painting of Pt. Fermin I am going to have a "Name That Painting" contest.

The winning name will receive a Limited Edition signed/numbered "Artist Proof" print #2/10.

Please DO NOT leave your suggestion in my guestbook. Either post it here or email it to me.

to add the image of Digger's painting to his post........

If you add a few cats to the painting (black on the lighthouse side of the fence and all different varieties on the outside of the fence), you could name it "The Cat's Meow".

Anybody that has been to Pt Fermin Lighthouse should understand the meaning of my suggestion.

I have had a couple of requests by e-mail about the cat’s story at Pt Fermin, so I thought I would just post my response....

There were a dozen lighthouse cats (9 black), that’s what the group taking care of the lighthouse called them. They said they always stayed inside the fence. There were at least 50 to 60 cats that lived in the Park and on the face of the cliff outside of the lighthouse fence. They said the two groups stay apart from each other. Apparently this (Park) has become a site that people just drop off their unwanted cats. While we were at the lighthouse, there were three older ladies feeding them, down on the edge of the cliff face. The people in the lighthouse said there were 2 main women but almost a dozen altogether that come by and feed the cats on a daily basis. Some of the lighthouse cats are eating along the sidewalk in the picture that I posted. You have to figure they probably don't have a mouse problem in the Park or Pt Fermin lighthouse.

El Faro del Portón del Angel

The actual Spanish name for the lighthouse, translation..

Angel's Gate Lighthouse

or more simply...

At Angel's Gate

Light at Angel's Gate

Angel's Gate Lighting the Way

by the way Digger one of these has to be the winner, since it was my 1500 post (quince poste de hundreth) on the Forums!!!

When do we find out what name you've chosen? There are some really good choices there. The contest might be more difficult than coming up with your own name. LOL.

You are right Joanne! What a tough decision! I think that I have narrowed it down to a couple. I was giving everyone a chance to submit and it seems the entries are slowely coming to an end so I will try to decide hopefully this weekend. It will probably be awhile before I can get the prints made because the company that does the photo work wants me to wait until I get at least 5 paintings done to bring to them. At $80 per painting for the transparencies I'm going to have to save up some money! If the winner is going to be in Chicago, I will probably present it to them there if that is OK with everyone.

AND THE WINNER IS........

As far as I am concerned everyone won. This was really hard!!! I had the whole family involved on the final decision and it still was very tough to decide. I want to thank everyone who submitted a name, it was very interesting to see all the different ideas. I received a total of 75 names with amazingly only 1 repeat!

The title of the painting will be "Victorian Summer" which was submitted by Jakers.

And now my questions to everyone .... Should we continue with these contests, did everyone enjoy getting involved, Should I throw the names into a hat and pick the winner to make it more fair, did it run too long, etc.? Let me know what you think or let me know your ideas on a variation or different contest that you think would be fun for everyone.

Congratulations to Jakers! Great Name.

Digger - I think the contest was a great idea - but only you can decide if you want to do it again - or for every picture.

It was fun to participate and to see all the great names people came up with. Thanks for letting us contribute to your great work!

I think it was fun and that would be neat to do again!!
As to picking the winner I think you should use the same "committee" since pulling from the hat might pick a "loser"" instead of a "winner".
