I know - 'Latest Models'... Well, having arrived here Friday from Collector's World in Cape Cod, (Thanks to a 'Retired @ Retail' tip - great service, too.), it is my 'latest arrival'.

Simple question: Why is there a cow, along with hay & poop, lying on the porch? As an animal lover, where is his water? Now, I am an old Auburn U. graduate, so I am accustomed to finding cows just about anywhere - but on a lighthouse on stilts? Actually, those prominent horns make me think he is a bull....

I am sure that there is a story here...

Thanks for your indulgence!

John

John,

History (or is it legend?) has it that the keeper's wife was pregnant and the cow was brought to the lighthouse to provide milk for the baby.

True Story:

The Keepers wife had a baby and could not produce enough milk for the baby herself. And being that there was no refrigeration at that time on the Lighthouse for storing milk. The Keeper kept a cow to provide milk for the baby.

Cool ha?

Hi Stainz--
Poop! Can you believe poop!?
My daughter is a cow lover, so we just had to find this HL. I came late to the gang, so I too had to find this piece at secondary.
When it came, my daughter was elated and she even pointed out the poop! That piece was a turning point in my collection- I realized the incredible detail that goes into each and every HL, even if it is poop!

Can you imagine what that must have been like! Not only to the Keeper and his wife but also to the cow! The walk around the lighthouse is so small and so close. But there was nowhere else to keep it. And remember that there was no A/C at that time so the windows would be open all spring, summer and fall. Oh, the smell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is a great piece and shows what the keeper and his family endured at the time.Bill O'Brien

Hmmm. Hay. Poop. Water? No water trough? Ah ha, an error! Gads, imagine that in the summer, indeed. I know how bad the smell of chicken coups is - just drive up US-231 and cross the county line from Blount to Cullman - the county in Alabama bestooned with chicken coups. Always test your A/C before that trip in the summer. I hate to think about a cow on a 'porch' with the windows open. I thought cleaning a cat box was miserable... Those 'keepers were indeed special folk.

The detail is great - even the sailboat's sail is properly inflated. Glad to see the sailor waving at us instead of the cow, too. Nice touches... how about a Sand Island (Alabama) lighthouse??
