All right Everyone! Here's the Scenario!
We're All(wouldn't that be nice) at the next Reunion. Cheasapeake area!(a little lobbying)
A drawing is made at that dinner for the(you guessed it)The Statue of Liberty.
And the winner is Paul Brady!!!!!
Now,... does he accept it? Does he have an Egyptian refuse to accept it on his behalf (ala Marlon Brando)? Does he burn his Collectors Society card in protest?
Or does he graciously accept it and say it was all a ploy, and he can now retire his Avon statue? He immediately heads to NYC after the reunion for one of those famous "Saint Paul - HL in front of the real thing photos" but only acknowledges that SoL was one of those disappearing LHs of the past. The Coast Guard immediately reactivates SoL as a navigational aid and all ends happily ever after!
And the hand holding the SoL HL is .....?

Yep, he accepts it.
I think he will use the rationale that legally the SOL is no longer in NYC. I believe it was legally determined a few years back that Libery Island is in New Jersey. NY might have it on their license plates, but it does belong to NJ now.
How's that Paul? Any better?

Actually, the Supreme Court ruling was that the land which constituted Liberty and Ellis Islands back when (sorry, don't know the year) New Jersey agreed to those islands being part of New York is still in New York now. The land which was NOT yet part of those islands at that time, that is the "added" portions of the islands created with landfill (Ellis Island, for example, as been enlarged from 3.3 acres to 27 acres) is in New Jersey. The portions which are in New York State include the statue itself and the main building on Ellis Island (the one open to visitors), which in turns means all of the gift shops and snack bars are in New York, which means New York is still getting all of the sales tax collected there.

Frank B,
That's really interesting. Thanks for the clarification. Once again, the forum proves to be a wealth of knowledge.

They don't call New York the land of taxes for nothing! Interesting, I never knew about the New Jersey bit.
