I was quite surprised to receive my HL today #77. It is very neat tall tower with a great keepers building that I must now find the time to visit, and climb.

Geez, Bob, we've been there and you haven't??? And it's not that far from your neighborhood. Oh, wait, no golf course nearby . . . .

Bob,

You may be able to see it from the street but it's unlikely you'll ever get to climb it- at least not until the lady next door moves on in some manner.

The NJLHS organized a trip to the Lighthouses of Staten Island. It was so popular it filled up for the Fall trip and a Spring trip was added.

The Fall trip got to climb the lighthouse but ahd to listen to the caterwauling of the lady next door the entire time they were there. She yelled, cursed and complained loudly the entire time- or so it was reported.

I went on the spring trip and we only got to see it from the street (I had already done that previously on my own ) because the coast guard would not allow anybody onto the grounds of the Lighthouse or to climb. You have to step onto about 7 feet of the neighbor's driveway to access the Lighthouse. Technically speaking she cannot block anybody from accessing it but we were told by the Coast Guard it just wasn't worth it to them to push the issue so we were not allowed access to the ligt.

That's life- we survived. It's a beautiful lighthouse with a unusual Keeper's house and some interesting looking houses around it that have nothing to do with the Lighthouse.

It's definitely not a low income neighborhood.

What street is it on, Dennis? The HL history describes it as being in a park. I think my cousin just moved in on that street. He keeps telling me there's a lighthouse a few houses down. He has no interest in lighthouses but knows I do.

Bob,

The park is on one side of the road where the lighthouse is- including a golf course.

Here are the directions from the Lighthouse Friends site-

From Interstate 278 on Staten Island, go south on Richmond Avenue 2.0 miles and then turn left on Richmond Hill Road. Follow this road for 1.4 miles into La Tourette Park and turn left onto Edinboro Road. The lighthouse will be on your right after about 0.3 miles.

There is also a Lighthouse Rd on the map of the area- right behind the lighthouse.

Here's the link for the info on Lighthouse Friends-

http://www.lighthousefriends.com/light.asp?ID=584

Maybe your cousin can get cosy/friendly with the caterwauling lady and get you access!

Come on Bob, Even I have been by to photograph it. And if memory serves me you may need a wide angle lens as the places to take a picture from are not the best (your very close to the light)

Thanks I thought it was clever myself.

You are right it is difficult to get a good picture with nothing in your way- like wires, etc. Here's one I took on the NJLHS Trip.

Staten Island is a place I'm commuting through at 5am heading south or trying to beat rush hour home to LI, Mark. My cousin had his wedding there last summer but I was in Michigan at the Reunion. I just saw all the NY Harbor Lights in July so I'm getting close. lol  I've also been waiting for the National Lighthouse Museum to get their act together?????? frown

There are programs that you can use to edit/straighten pictures.

The one I use may very well actually do that- I'm a creature of habit. I tend to find out how to do certain functions in a program and don't think of others.

I'll have to check and see if it has that capability.

Bob,

At this point I wouldn't bet on that ever happening- at least in the forseeable future.Thier timing was just bad- they were looking for mucho funds right after 911 and got lost in the shuffle I believe.

If your program does not have that function. E-mail me and I will send you on a very easy program I use that you can download from the internet.

It's real easy to straighten pictures with those programs.
The one i have is "Microsoft Digital Image suite." I've done a lot with it and I need to play with it some more to see what else I can do.
One feature,that I like a lot, let's you remove
unwanted things from your pictures.

Judy,

I didn't see it but there's one listed on the map just around the corner from the lighthouse.

I don't have the capability of straightening or erasing with the program I use but I'm a creature of habit and I like what else it does so i'm sticking with it for now.

Works perfectly for a woman, too, Bob, esp. if she's fairly good with her Photoshop software... laugh

Dennis, you don't need to fix a thing with that photo. I enjoyed seeing it.

I think Bob Scroope should check out that golf course and give us a report. Any golf course near or in sight of a lighthouse is worth checking out. I've only visited three other courses that meet this criteria, at the Highlands and the two at Hilton Head. Oops...forgot the Currituck Club course, so four, or Fore, a word needed a lot if I'm hitting the ball.

Well, Judy, there are others . . .

Point Pinos backs up to a golf course. I know at least one person, who shall remain nameless, that took life in hand and went out onto the golf course for his picture.

Then there is Wind Point which is also next to a golf course.

I'm sure there are others (and probably some that my feeble old mind isn't remembering...)

Dave,

The Wind Pont golf course only has nine holes -- at least it did. Of course as we age a tad every year, maybe nine is plenty.

Possibly as some of us finish #9, we forget what happened on #1, and start all over again.

Judy,

To get the view of Wood Island (Me) Lighthouse you need to walk around the Abenekee Golf Club ... you then walk along the Audobon Club Trail ... then come to the viewing spot to see the lighthouse across the inlet ...

Must have pass very close to this lighthouse over a hundred times on my way to and from relatives homes. Didn't know it existed until HL made this years model.

I was going to visited and climb it the next time we went into NYC. Bummed I can only take a look from the outside. frown

Hilary,

We were in Kinsale this past month. Unfortunately we did not have time to get out to that lighthouse.

We did get a rear view of the Charles Fort Lighthouse which is just outside of town. Unfortunately I forgot it was there until it was too late to go into the fort.

We only had a 10-15 minute photo stop there. I would have paid the admission just for the photo of the whole lighthouse- I'm just a Wacko.

AND, be sure and take photos of each of you at some of your stops. I usually get so caught up in the scenery that I forget to do that.

This could be the start of yet another hobby...collecting photos of golf courses that are graced by a lighthouse. laugh

Don't worry, we'll be taking pictures all over the place. I even bought a nice new light tripod for the trip. One that will fit into my suitcase. I just hope a gust of wind dosen't come along and blow the whole thing over with my camera on it as it is very light. Unfortunately with the new security rules I won't be bringing the NELL banner as planned as it won't fit in the suitcase and it can't be folded to fit. I don't think I can take it as carry on as I'll have my 2 bags already. frown As far as posting, I'm trying to get caught up with the pictures from our Niagara - Seaway Trail trip. I still have a lot to go and would like to get them all up so all I'll have to do will be Ireland when we return.

smile cool

How did I miss this thread? This is some classic CF going on here...

I actually thought that this was new until I noticed the August dates halfway through. I've decided that all forum software must give a red background to posts over one month old.

I'd like to get to Staten Island - especially considering that the lights there are closer to me than those in Monmouth County. Thing is, I need my parent(s) to come with me for at least another year, since SI is, after all, one of the five boroughs of NYC - a place I cannot drive in until I'm 18. frown

But when I do get there, it's about 6 hours home-home for all the lights.

collecting photos of golf courses that are graced by a lighthouse.
Highland Light on Cape Cod is also in the middle of a golf course.

We did get to Charles Fort and Tom managed to smooze the gate keeper of the golf course at Old Head of Kinsale, he even called the lady at the lighthouse who would have let us climb had she not been on her way out to pick up her child. Also go to see the ruins of the two previous lights and keepers house which sit on the seveth hole of the golf course. In all Ireland was a great trip. We saw and photographed over 70 lighthouses, range lights and lightships. Got to climb 5 lighthouses almost 6. Pretty cool considering only one light in Ireland, Hook, is open to the general public.
Hopefully Tom will post pictures, sorry I have not learnt how to do it. Judy I could always e-mail you some!
We also saw Warren Point located on Greencastle Golf Club.

If you are looking for lighthouses on golf courses, the light at Cromer on the east coast of England is also on a golf course smile
