I like this one too from a historical aspect but it's a little plain...Cheryl Spencer Collin did this one a long time ago and she included a better piece of the rock.

I think, Rock, that a few years back there would have been a "better piece of the rock" with the sculpture. But with the cost of the materials skyrocketing in order to keep the price down there is less rock, Rock..

I haven't researched this one yet, but I generally would pay extra for more rocks, cliffs, docks, bridges, etc, to give the piece more reality.

While I like sailboats, picnic benches, bycycles, cars. etc, on some of the pieces, these could be left out to cut cost.

Sounds like Old Alcatraz should have been done similar to Egg Rock.

There's plenty of rock on the Egg...I really think it diminishes Old Alcatraz's impact not having it high up on a Split Rock GLOW-type cliff...

Again, I may be in the minority as usual, but I like the piece as stands. I really like the California(West Coast) design of lights and especially like the stacked cannonballs, fence and overall design. I really like the tip/ball on the roof of the lantern room.

I have a special interest in the west coast Cape Cods. I have seen several pictures of this lighthouse with the cannon balls, and the downspout detail, haven't seen a picture with the stone retaining wall though.
I did place an order for this replica as soon as I saw the first picture.

From the pics I've found on the web, the lighthouse was in the middle of the island.

So a true depection was done by Harry. Having it on a cliff or with more rocks wouldn't be correct.

I also read that the reason this lighthouse was torn down was to build the prison, which is not near the shore line.

I stand by my comments...they put the new Alcatraz up on a cliff, they should've done the same with the old...Joe the Average Tourist is going to take one look at it and say "too plain"...

Rock, Do you have any pics or links for the Cheryl Spencer Collin version?

OK, keep in mind I'm no Mr. Brady...but here's Old Alcatraz from Cheryl Spencer Collin, a member's only piece from 1998...the sticker on the bottom of the piece specifies that she is showing the hill as it was in the 1800's before it was reshaped for use as a fortress and prison.

Thanks for the image, Rock, nice job on shooting and posting it..

I would have to say this makes me like Harry's rendering of the Old Alcatraz Light even more. His is much more accurate to the real light. The location and number of the windows and the doors on the front for a start. The Old Alcatraz only had two windows on the front and it had two doors The window on the tower was on the backside not the front of the lighthouse. The chimneys are all wrong. I could go on and on..

Her sculpture is much more closely a of model of Old Point Loma not the Old Alcatraz Lighthouse.

Bill at Old Point Loma, a blast from the past!!

I have several CSC lighthouses, but, my favorite is Ponce Inlet. The only reason I have several is my local Halmark Store put them on sale at 80% off when they went out of business about 10 years ago. They are good reproductions but do not carry the detail that HLs reproductions do. They also have too many animals, birds, etc. on them for my liking. The ironic thing is the first lighthouse I ever got was a CSC Ponce Inlet that my wife bought me in 1993 for my birthday from the Hallmark store that went out of business. I liked it very much as I spent almost 3 years stationed at Ponce De Leon Coast Guard Station which is right across the inlet from the lighthouse. About a week later we were leaving Jacksonville after shopping all day and stopped at a gift shop in Middleburg Florida. I was looking around, and lo and behold, they had a HLs Ponce Inlet for sale at $40.00 less then the CSC version and with much more detail. To make a long story short, I bought the HLs version and returned the CSC version to the Hallmark store.

PS: When the Hallmark store went out of business, the CSC Pnce Inlet that I bought was the same one that I had returned 7 years earlier. I remembered the serial number and it was the same number.

I first started my collecting (1999) at Currituck. I had just climbed and MaryAnn was in the gift shop. We had been to BaldHeadIsland the year before and she really wanted a house there! Very realistic LOL. Anyway, she wanted to buy me a BaldIsland LH. Currituck had at least 4-6 versions of each NC lighthouse. I told MaryAnn that I better make a decision on which brand I wanted cause I knew I’d want more. So I got several catalogs and studied them. Needless to say which I thought was best! So we went to Nags Head Gift Shop to look for a Montauk and was told it was RETIRED! And so it began….

I guess this reinforces my decision - looking at Roc's pic -
