Could you guys explain the HL history on Alcatraz. Did it start as a GLOW go to LE then reisssued as GLOW. Some of the ebay postings on this have me confused and I do know where to get the straight facts. Thanks in advance

Sure, Orv...

www.HarbourLights.com/modifications/pages/open2limited.htm

This area is under construction and the links from it probably don't work. I'd planned to get it done by the end of last year (!), but it sits and waits for time to do.

Don't worry, lots of new collectors are confused by this issue.

Let me see if I've got this right, Please correct me if I'm wrong. If I have a 407 A**** it is a Limited Edition. Any 177 would be a LE, any 417 would be a OPEN. Is there such a thing as 177 A****? Thanks

I read Orv's latest post differently, Sean...

If it has a sticker with "407 Alcatraz" on the bottom it SHOULD have an edition number that starts with "A". If it has "177 Alcatraz" on the label it should NOT have an "A" as part of the edition number.

In 1998, Harbour Lights issued HL417 is the GLOW version of Alcatraz.

Another contributor to the confusion is that Harbour Lights chose to issue new GLOWs using the previously assigned numbers for items that were switched from open to limited. Thus #407 is now Holland MI GLOW.

Clear as Mudd.

HL417 - GLOW Alcatraz

HL177 (Formerly HL407) Limited Edition

OK, John...now for some real confusion.

I have known individuals (or maybe even a dealer or two?) who felt that somehow having a sticker on the bottom of a limited edition light that says "Great Lighthouses of the World" with a 407 series number (like the first batch), made some collectors think they had purchased an open edition piece instead of a limited edition piece.

Therefore, some may have requested a new sticker from Harbour Lights with the newer HL177 number to place on theirs. This would then create an "A" editon serial number with the HL177 sticker on the bottom. Not a rarity in any way, or even a proper thing to do, but it has happened before. Food for thought!

So I guess the best course is to buy any Alcatraz except for the 417 (unless you want the open version

Oh Almost forgot, I finally was able to reserve a Hillsboro today. Had to call 5 dealers to get one that (A)knew what I was talking about or (b)had any that wasn't already reserved.
