Uglystone - thats what the Ancient Mariner (aka Fred Kuhl) called it. I look at the model and think - geez I know the British have built some odd things in this world, and I guess this is just another of 'em. Of course Harbour Lights did a great job capturing all its glory.

Then, looking at the snaps of Digman's superfine painting of this edifice, I imagined the real light in the water as seen by real sailors. It struck me that maybe Eddystone's primary purpose was not as a lighthouse. Maybe its the navigational equivalent of a scarecrow.

Well Winstanley wasn't much of an engineer but he certainly had flair.

I love the scarecrow idea! Maybe his idea was that since the LH was out in "no man's land", he would make it gaudy as all get out, just because he could. I bet he was a tinkerer too. HL would have been accused of making fantasy lights if no one knew that this light really did look so silly. But HL did do a great job on it!
