Did everyone see the Lighthouse on top of the Super Bowl Logo ?? Just above the XXXVIII.

Yeah, I thought that was really neat the way the beacon was flashing. Anyone know why they chose the lighthouse?

Why the Lighthouse Logo? I imagine it was the "Battle of the Bays" that led them to something nautical in the logo.

Anyone who watched the game would realize the referees needed some sort of guiding light to help them out. There certainly was more than one or two bad calls.

The Raiders also needed a guiding light to get them back to Oakland via the river of tears. Boy did they fall flat.

Does anyone know of a light near Oakland or Tampa that might have led to the use of a lantern room in the logo?

Inquiring minds on the East Coast, where it's just about zero degrees and the temps are headed lower in an attempt to set a new record low tonight, would like to know.

The logo was chosen way before the teams were known. My hunch would be that they chose a lantern room - which looks suspiciously like OLD POINT LOMA - just because it was San Diego and lighthouses are quite popular. While the astragals and proportions aren't "right", it's awfully close to the look of the closest lighthouse to the stadium.

There was a building looking remarkably like the top of Hooper's Strait in San Diego Harbor that you could see every night on the Super Bowl Report on ESPN SportCenter. It had the exact lantern room that was on the patch which when lit up at night looked to have 'mock' rays of light coming from the exact replica of the latern room. I think it was a mock LH that was probably a fancy restaurant or Yacht Club.

Here's a response from a local friend "I couldn't find it in writing but there was an article written quite some time ago about who designed the logo. But if I remember correctly the
inspiration of it was from the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. Leading up to the game that was shown for a few weeks was a commercial featuring the Old Point Loma Lighthouse at sunset and a helicopter zooming in and over it as it
revolved with the light on. Gorgeous shot.

Regarding where the ESPN people were, I never saw that, but my best guess would be right the following theory. Next door to the NFL Headquarters Hotel is the San Diego Convention Center. On the bayside of the convention center
is where the NFL Experience was placed. Right at the south end of the NFL Experience is a yacht club that they renovated just in time for the Super Bowl. This club has on top of it a faux lighthouse, much like Tom Ham's Lighthouse Restaurant on the other side of the bay. So, if the background was the NFL Experience then it was the yacht club. If the background was a
faraway shot of our downtown buildings and skyline then it was Tom Ham's. I doubt it would be the latter as it was very removed from the "action" taking place downtown."

Ah gee Never make a bet with your husband about anything that has to do with football even the logo. All I will hear now is, "Hey I thought you were the one that knew everything about lighthouses" (which I have never claimed). So now I have to hear the old "I told you so!!" :p
