John,
I would like two of the thumbnails.
Does this thumbnail have a Harbour Light production number?

I will open up the order form today after I talk to the Sea Pines Gift Shop. They've charged by account, but I don't have the thumbnails yet.

Check back in this thread this afternoon.

The Thumbnails have NOT arrived yet. But you can place orders via this page:

www.johnchidester.com/forums/

Rod Watson is acting as treasurer and minding the till on this project. Your order will be filled by myself (as soon as they arrive). Fill in the form, choose your method of payment and click on "PLACE ORDER". You can then fulfill the payment method you chose.

Thanks for the orders, everyone. They are coming in nicely. I talked to Sea Pines today - they had an incorrect address and UPS should be delivering them tomorrow. I'll have them out in the USPS on Wednesday if they arrive tomorrow.

Half of the 100 are spoken for now. But not to worry, I can get more. Just keep those orders coming in.

The order arrived from Sea Pines.

Now I've got to tell you that it is NOT a thumbnail - it is a Spyglass size lighthouse - probably the same one as in the Spyglass Southern Bell Set.

The confusion started at Harbour Lights - who told me they had done a custom "Thumbnail" and continued with Sea Pines - she had never seen a real thumbnail.

So I'm going to ship one to Paul tomorrow, take a quick photo of one tonight myself and email everyone who has ordered so far and offer them a chance to back out.

If you used the online order form, look for my email tomorrow and please reply.

If you want out and you've already sent Rod a check, he'll get the word and simply void it. If you used PayPal and you want out, he can refund the payment.

If you want to reduce the number you ordered, you can let me know that tomorrow by replying to my email.

Remember it's still a good cause and most of what you paid will go to Bill's Thomas Point Screwpile if you accept the order.

I do have labels printed for everyone who has ordered and padded envelopes + the pieces are individually bubble-wrapped.

I'm still in, John. It's too bad that it didn't turn out to be a thumbnail, but the money goes to a very, very worthy cause. Plus it's a pretty little light. I'm looking at my Southern Belles, and it is such a distinctive little light. AND, now, we have another tale to tell about our lights - "the thumbnail that wasn't!" wink

Here's a comparison of a true Thumbnail (right laugh ) and the Sea Pines Spyglass:

There is no bottom label except a clear "Handcrafted in China one."

It's a really pretty and different lighthouse; I hope everybody will still want it despite the fact that it's a little bigger than anticipated. Remember that the thumbnail is about the height of a penny, so Sea Pines isn't very big at all.

Just looked at my Sea Pines from the Southern Bell Spy Glass set and there does seem to be some difference from the one you picture John.
So maybe it is a variation.

It does seem to be a little different from mine but it could be the angle from which it is pictured. I think it may well be a variation, though. Somebody else, take a look at your Belles and tell us what you think.

Mine looks skinnier than your photo John, the palm tree also. And the leaves (fronds?) seem a bit different.

Sue, I think you are right; the palm is a little higher than the second white stripe from the bottom, too; in the picture it looks like it only goes midway on that stripe. There's a hedge in the Southern Belle but it looks more like a bush in front of the palm in this picture. Again, it may just be the angle. Can't wait to get mine so I can compare them. smile

I've already got the Southern Belles Spyglass Set and do not need a duplicate Sea Pines miniature...I've cancelled my order...why doesn't the "new" HL pick up the Spyglass Series where the "old" HL left off and make us a LE Great Lakes Set?

Perhaps this thread should be renamed "The Thumbnail That Never Was"...

I already have it, too, but I like the idea that it's a variation, and, as I said earlier in this thread, it's another "tale to tell about our lights - 'the thumbnail that wasn't'".

With Tony C saying at the Regional that future editions will be smaller and the number of lighthouses being brought out will be fewer our wish list may become long indeed.

For those who had ordered as of Thursday last, your pieces were mailed on Friday, whether paid or not.

For those who ordered Friday-Saturday, yours will go out on Monday.

If you can't trust lighthouse people, who can you trust?

Thanks everyone. Still have a bunch left.

John,

Received my order today. WIll the production # remain HL415Th ?

I have compared the piece to my spyglass and found a few points of difference.

1. The palm tree is shorter than on the spyglass
2. The palm fronds are a darker green than on
the spyglass
3. The light room roof is a lighter blue than on
the spyglass
4. The Palm frond shape appears to be the same
with details somewhat masked by the darker
shade of green on the new piece.
5. The base tan color is darker than the spyglass.

So far as I know it is HL415Th - that product number came from Harbour Lights. I've quoted a 10,000 quantity, however something that the buyer said seems to indicate that they had to agree to buy that many. They may not have had that many made yet. And if that is the case, there could be more made if they sell out of these.

I'll try to clarify that with HL, but they may not want to publicize that arrangement.

Thanks for your observations, Lonnie.

Probably #1 is the significant difference. The others would just be a painting difference, more or less, slightly darker or lighter mixes.

I received two yesterday. Right now I have them sitting on either side of my spyglass version for comparison sake. I agree with John that all the other differences noted by Jasser are probably a difference in paint mixes, and both of mine do have a slightly darker base.

But, the palm tree...

Jasser noted
Quote:
1. The palm tree is shorter than on the spyglass
One of the two I received yesterday is noticably shorter than on the spyglass.

The other one, to my eye, is exactly the same height.

Mine arrived Friday. There may be slight differences but they basically are duplicates. I'm glad the funds are going towards a good cause otherwise I would have been more disappointed. We probably will use ours to give to kids or for doorprizes at any lighthouse presentations we make.
We don't need three of the same unless it is an original Cape Hatteras LE, Coquille LE, etc. and we don't even have one of those!!!

Your comparison photo looks like you must have walked into my house and taken a picture of mine.

I've already given my two new Sea Pines to a neighbor. She has twin boys and their fifth birthday party is next week. The guys will love it.

I hate to put a damper on this party. But calling a spyglass a thumbnail doesn’t make it a thumbnail.
As I said before, back in 1998, just after the Southern Bell spyglasses came out, Hilton head management made an agreement with Harbour Lights. Harbour Lights agreed to sell the Hilton Head spyglass as a solitary piece to the Hilton Head lighthouse store.
This was to be the only place were you could buy this spyglass without purchasing the complete set of the southern Bells

Since Harbour lights have been producing these Spyglasses for Hilton for eight years we are now seeing a paint variation probably from the fact that a new batch of Lighthouses was just purchased. Possibly from an other manufacturer.

Daniel, I agree with you. It's not a thumbnail it's a one-off from the Southern Belles set. A footnote in the history, but that's about it.

The fact that it is a paint variation from the original southern Bell set, makes it a desirable HL to collect. It also looks like the tree leans Differently than the early version. I know I want both types.

I just jumped in the last couple post. I now have gone back and read all the post. I see that we are calling it a spyglass and not a thumbnail. I apologize for jumping in and not reading all the post first.

I actually love the Spyglass size and have requested more regions be done as sets for years.. The new Sea Pines is sitting in my miniature cabinet next to its older sister.. I do collect and display variations after all!!

I like the fact that I now have three variations, so to speak. As I posted earlier, one of the two I ordered has a palm tree the same height as the original spyglass version, and look like Paul's photo comparisons. The other one has a noticibly shorter trunk.

Kind of a neat reason for folks to order more, I think.

And it was meant to be a fundraiser.

For those who had ordered as of Thursday last, your pieces were mailed on Friday, whether paid or not.

For those who ordered Friday-Saturday, yours will go out on Monday.
John,

I have not received my Sea Pines yet. frown I am assuming they were mailed out on Monday the 24th since we talked on Sun the 23rd to confirm I still wanted them. Is that an accurate assumption? I wouldn't have thought it would have taken this long to go from AZ to CO???

Would you please let me know when mailed? Thanks.

My apologies. I have the pieces in envelopes for Melody, Ron and Rick - meaning to drop them in the mail today.

I'm in Florida until next Monday and any others will have to wait until the 22nd.

Thanks for the info John. I was afraid they had been lost in the mail or miss-delivered. Out here in the "sticks" you never can tell.

Ghost - please email me your address and name and I'll send it out today.

Anyone else? I thought I had them covered.

webmaster@lighthousekeepers.com

need your full address and name.

Apologies...

John

P.S. I'm working on another fund raising idea that may be announced at the Portland Regional - I think you'll like it.

I'll get with Rod and Dave and we'll put together an update on the Bill Younger Screwpile Fund by week's end.

John,
We mailed our check to Rod on July 19th. We received our Sea Pines on July 25th, but the check has not cleared our bank as of September 8th. Hopefully it isn't lost.
Can you help get this straightened out?

Thanks,

Tom & Joyce

I'm waiting for a call-back from Rod on the reconciliation so I'll bring that up.
