Hey anyone out there with knowledge about any of the lighthouses in Hawaii? Larry and I will be going to Hawaii December 4-16th to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. I got some information off the web but didn't know how many were really worth the effort to go and see. Some just look like cell phone towers, I know we will going to Diamond Head, Kilauea, and Makapu'u, maybe Barber's Point but not sure about any others.

The Shanklins have a nice softcover book on the Hawaiian Lights.

You should be able to order it from their website:

www.thelighthousepeople.com

It was a little hard to find - the link above should take you to the right page, then scroll down a bit.

Do some research right here in the Forums, Kat. Dennis Whelan, Bob Scroope and Lorie Roe have all been to Hawaii and posted reports and pictures. Some of the NELL folks did a cruise in that area last year - Tom K, Jim & Hilari and others.

Speaking of the NELL folks, Ron Foster put together a beautiful chronology of the trip with pictures and explanatory captions. Maybe you can peruse his KodakGallery album.

Kat...The lighthouses you mentioned are all good ones to see. Diamond Head is a little hard to see from the road becasue of all the trees around it. Take a hike down towards the beach and you can get a shot looking up towards the lighthouse. We took a catamaran ride off Waikiki Beach and it sailed past the Diamond Head lighthouse. You need a zoom on your camera to get a close-up shot.

My favorite is Makapu Point. The lens is incredible. I have pictures posted on the forums of all the lighthouses you mentioned.

Barber's Point is in a dumpy industrial area but the sunset from the lighthouse is worth the drive out to it. It is next to a place that has luau's each night.

On Kauai, Kilauea lighthouse is in the National Wildlife Refuge Center. It is also a favorite place to visit on that island. You might be able to spot whales from there. Whale season usually begins the first of Dec. through March.

You are going to love it! smile

A nice view of Diamond Head Lightouse is from Diamond Head itself. There is a trail you can climb to the top. As you climb you go in a tunnel, so it is helpful to have a flash light. You also climb out of a pill box to hike the last part of the trail. A good wind at the top, so be careful.

Also on Kauai is Nawilliwilli which is what I call a real lighthouse. There are others but they are posts or towers with lights on.
On Oahu there is Aloha tower and Ka'ena Point which has fallen over and lies in ruins on the sand.
The Big Island has Cape Kumukahi Light which was left standing after the lava flow destroyed everything around it. There is also Coconut Point and Kauola Point Light. Again there are others to see but they are not as interesting.
Maui has Lahaina Light on the harbour in the town of Lahaina. There are also range lights there.

Thanks for all the help, I am really getting excited after seeing some of the photos; I really love the sunset photo's Bob.
Larry and I are flying into Honolulu, we will be spending 4 or 5 days on Oahu, we will be at Pearl Harbor on Dec 7th, and then we will be taking an 8 day cruise aboard the 'Spirit of America' to four of the islands. The cruise ship itinerary says we will be doing an evening cruise by Mount Kilauea....can't wait to see that sight!!! We have already reserved some of our excursions, one is a bicycle ride from Haleakala crater...downhill all the way. But you go up on top of the crater in the wee hours of the morning to watch the sun rise, you are above the clouds. We leave the ship at 2:45am, hope I don't fall asleep on my bike on the way down. And I sure hope the brakes hold out. Another fun adventure we have planned is a helicopter ride over the active lava flows...the tour is called 'Ring of Fire', I believe that more than describes what we will be viewing. Anyway should be an really awesome and incredible time.

Helicopter ride is a must! We did Kauai. Didn't go down the mountain on the bike but it seems they have a van following you, just in case. We were there for 17 days and island hopped 4 by plane. Every day was better than the day before. If we didn't have 4 kids we never would have come back! wink Really.

This is my dream to go to the islands. Sounds like it is possible to see all the lights as well as take in the other fun stuff. Thanks everybody for sharing trips, suggestions, etc. One of these days... !

I'm somewhere off the coasts of Ireland, england and France as I type this so I'm not going to search for my previous posts about Hawaii at this time.

I'll just add that a trip to Hawaii is a great thing- we've been there twice and I'd have to say of the three islands we visited Kauai is my favorite with the Big Island a very close second and Oahu in third.

Nawillilli is great fun to find and if you're lucky a plane will land while you are there- it's literally at the end of the main runway for the airport on Kauai.

Kileaua is the most beautiful of the lighthouses on Hawaii- the lighthouse itself and it's setting combined. Of course this is subjective.

We spent a week on the Big Island last year and I got to both of the main lighthouses ,Cape Kumukahi Lighthouse and Kauhola Point.

If you intend to go to Kauhola Point you need to rent a four wheel drive truck- the road is very rough out to the lighthouse.

I hope you have a great cruise- I'm on one myself right now and have seen a few lighthouses so far.

More to follow.

Dennis
