In another thread I mentioned that I'd been making some cross stitch lighthouse ornaments (a form of winter lighthousing up here in snowland).

I've completed nine of them with the 10th and last one (for now) is almost finished. It was tough getting the right lighting but here's a peek at them.

Very nice, Sue. You say you are going to make one for each of the active posters here on the Collector Forums?

They look great Sue! Are the patterns from a kit or a booklet?

I keep buying lighthouse cross stitch projects and starting them but the many color changes have been driving me nuts so I send them to my father to finish. I have no patience for too many colors in a project.

Thanks guys.

I guess "active" is the key word here Dave, eh? I really don't see myself making 1300+ of these!

Shirin, they're from a booklet called "The Ultimate Book of Lighthouses" by Treetrunk Designs. It's book #1104 from 1997. Most of them are pretty simple, not a lot of color changes. There are 112 lighthouses in all. There are also some booklets that have only the designs by region. Quite a few are too big to fit in the small frames so I tried to pick some in various styles from different areas that would fit. I used 18 ct. fabric which requires that I use 2.75x reading glasses and good light! The frames are from a local craft store. The inside dimensions are 2 1/4" square.

I must have looked at this booklet in stores locally dozens of times and didn't buy it. Then when I wanted it it was gone. I found it on the web, best price from a store in TX! If you're interested email me and I'll give you the info on ordering.

I'm thinking about getting one of those photo collage frames that have various sized openings. That way I can make some of the larger designs to fit the larger openings. If I go to larger count fabric I'll go blind for sure!

I have a couple other non lighthouse projects going so am going to return to them. One I started eons ago but can't seem to stick with it long enough to finish it. Shirin, how much of a backlog does your Dad have? Maybe I should send it to him! wink

I started a lighthouse crossstitch once...Pt. Judith...I couldn't get it started, so I asked my grandma to bring it home and start it for me. I have to remember to ask her if she still has it. I would love to do more of them. smile

I like the collage idea Sue. That would be neat to see done. My dad's backlog...well..I'm still waiting on a couple of lighthouse projects I gave him over Thanksgiving but I know I've got a bit of a wait for them as he hasn't even started to make a frame yet for either of them nor has my mother cut the matting. I'll have to see where they stand.

Your photos have inspired me to get my act together and hang up all of my Dad's finished projects this week. I've been a little slow at getting pictures on the walls of the new apartment but I think I should really get going on that.

Very nice Sue! Well done! Takes a lot more talent than I have to do what your doing, but heck, maybe Shirin's Dad could show me how.

Very nice Sue!

Now we know what Mombo does during the snowy winter months besides trying to dig herself out.

Hi Sue,

I can see the names of the finished nine, but I'm wondering what light is the 10th?

Nice work there, young lady. wink

Be Well,

Dan

Nice work Sue. I wish I could have MJ do things like these but after doing two very large projects with birds in them (which hang on her mother's living room walls) she stopped.

The site you gave us Shirin has many nice projects. Maybe Bert and I could both take lessons from your Dad.

Oh if only Dad knew I was telling everyone his secret again. He does beautiful work, even the back of his projects look good. All I can say is that I taught him how to cross stitch when I was in middle school and he quickly passed me by finishing tons of projects.

Dan, the unfinished (now finished) ornament is supposed to be Sand Island, WI. I had a heck of a time finding a decent photo of that lighthouse to see if the colors were right. But I did find a good one in a book I'd forgotten I had. In that photo the sun was shining on the light and it seemed lighter and the roof a brighter red. But I just figured that my ornie would be the shady version so the colors are darker. smile

(I especially like that young lady! Thanks!)

Hey if Rosie Greer could do needlepoint, why can't guys do cross stitch???

Shirin.

Dad's are very forgiving. But Ron and I won't tell.

Sue, nice work. I used to cross stitch, but now that I have RA, I can't hold the needle. I probably have a couple of lighthouse books packed away in the closet. I'll have to dig them out and see what they are.

Hey Sue...very nice work on your ornies. How big are they when framed? Looks like a nice variety too.
I have purchased material and embroidery patterns to make a queen size quilt with embroidered lighthouses from the Great Lakes area. I look forward to getting it started.
Keep up the good work!

Very nice Sue!

I bought a couple of kits to work on while I was recently recovering from surgery, but they are still in the store's bag lol. I decided to catch up on my reading instead. Also have several stitch projects that I did start before my daughter was born, but they are still not finished and she's 16! eek Maybe Shirin's Dad would like to finish them as well smile

Really nice Sue. I use to cross stitch, but the old eyes aren't what they use to be so gave it up some years back.

Those sure look nice Sue! How many hours do you spend on each one? How do you decide which one to make?

I would want to put them in some sort of display to enjoy all year after I put that much work into them. wink
