Not sure exactly where this goes so let me know if there is a more appropriate section. We used to spend our summers at Woods Hole. I've been having my parent's slides scanned and have found a couple of lighthouses among them. These were taken in 1947

This one is marked House and lifeguard Station and it was (I think) taken on Cuttyhunk

The home you describe as "Lifeguard Station" is still on Cuttyhunk and is now a private residence. We've been going to Cuttyhunk since 1968 so I'm familiar with the island. The Public Library building has been replaced with a larger building and is on the left as you start to climb the hill to the top of the island.

Ladder fences around the lighthouse. I wonder why.

I think the referenced Life Guard Station is the red roofed building in the background. I have another photo of that house and may have a couple more that I haven't gotten to yet - this last order is 3822 sides and the one before that was about 1600. It takes some time to figure out what everything is.

I don't know what the most efficent way to do this is - the scans come back in more or less the same way that I submitted them. This time I had bunches of about 25 which are all of the same sequences, but as you can imagine, this means over 150 bunches.

Currently, I am numbering the scans to coincide with the slides.

I didn't even notice that until you pointed it out. Were there any New England hurricanes prior to the summer of 1947?

I think these are very good photos of this lighthouse, especially considering that they were taken over 60 years ago.

There was the 1938 hurricane. I'm not sure how hard it hit Cuttyhunk. The lighthouse looks in fine shape.
They are great photos Rosalie. I was looking to see what had changed, mostly fencing, when I noticed the ladders.

The lighthouse isn't in Cuttyhunk. It is Nobska light in Woods Hole.

Oops! I misunderstood which building you were refering to. The USCG Building in the background is their boat house. Very similar to the one that burnt at Menemsha Harbor this year. The actual quarters for the Coasties was around an eighth of a mile from the boat house. It's also still there but it is a private residence now.

Anyway that's all the ones I know of that are of Cuttyhunk. We used to room with a boat broker named Ed Athern in Woods Hole and he would take us out in boats that he was showing for people. Cuttyhunk was one of the places. Got lots of photos of Woods Hole and area, and some of the Vineyard and I think we even went through the Cape Cod canal in a bass fishing boat.

The quality of these 63 year uld color photos is outstanding. What method did you use to digitise them? Are they color negatives or slides?
I have a color photo of Shinnecock LH that someone lent me that I had digitised 10 years ago. It was an unusually large color slide.

People have commented on the quality of my dad's photos before. All I can say is - he used Kodachrome slide film (for the most part - sometimes he used Ektachrome but he didn't like the bluish tint as well and I don't find that the color on those holds up as well).

I have b&w prints of pictures my mom took when she was young (probably from 1915) and also some that my dad took and developed and printed himself from when I was born in 1937, and the quality of these isn't quite as good. My dad also took 16 mm movies - this one is him at my sister's wedding reception



and about 60 years ago, he also took Polaroids - back when they were sepia. This is a Polaroid taken by my mom circa 1949 of us on the Atlantic City boardwalk



As for the slides, my mom listed and cross referenced them and they were stored in wooden slide boxes in a cool dry closet. Each slide box had 100 slots and my mom stored 200 slides in each box. My pictures stored in a metal box with 25 slides in a section have more of a problem with mold although the color is still pretty good.

My mom threw out the bad pictures, and sometime around her 91st birthday we had a slide discarding session and threw out even more slides. Including quite a few where Daddy was using outdated film which he didn't want to just throw away so he stood near Niagara Falls and snapped away. My mom asked him why he took so many of the same thing, and he said "It's different water". That became a family joke.

I tried using a slide scanner at home, but it took me half an hour to scan 28 slides four at a time and then cut the scans apart and edit the slides. I'd be 400 years old before I finished at that rate, as my mom's list goes up past 9999 before she got to the point where she couldn't keep up anymore - that was probably about 1965.

So I started sending pictures to scanmyphoto.com I started because they had a flat rate for all you could get into a medium flat rate box from the PO. First I sent three boxes of prints - most of the boxes were about 1800 pictures.

Then I started on my slides and found that the quality of picture I got was better than what I could do myself. So that's where I've been sending them.

This was in 1966 - a picture of mine taken at the Sand Dunes NM - my mom and dad both taking pictures

I find all of this extremely fascinating. Thank you for sharing these moments of your life.

Unfortunately, after my Dad died and my Mom moved into a nusing home, my brother threw out all of their old photos when he cleaned out their house. Sure wish I could have gotten to them before they went into the dumpster.

We are planning a vacation trip to SC, Georgia and Florida, I have never traveled in that area. There are many lighthouses to see and to best utilize our time I need to make an accurate itinerary. I have many Harbour Lights lighthouse replicas, one of them being a #10 Dry Tortugas, Florida. When it looked possible that we would be able to drive the Florida Keys highway, I wanted to visit the Dry Tortugas lighthouse. Well, today in looking at the travel book, it appears that may be impossible. Has anyone visited the Dry Torugas lighthouse, or is it not possible to visit this lighthouse? Our vacation will be approximately 17 days total.

You can get to Garden Key - Fort Jefferson lighthouse by ferry. Sunny Days Catamarans From there you can see Loggerhead Key in the distance. I'm not sure how far...haven't been there yet but I've been planning. You need a private boat to get near Loggerhead Key and a permit to land. For the reef light of Florida be sure to look at the maps and directions here Florida Reef Lights
