On my recent trip to Northern Europe we spent a couple of days lighthousing along the southern part of Sweden - basically the area across the Kattegat from Denmark down to the southern tip of Sweden. These pictures were all taken last month and I will post them in geographic order beginning at the most northerly ones we saw and continuing south from there. Some of them were taken from ferries so they are quite distant - hopefully you'll be able to see the lights in the photos.

First is the island of Vinga and what is referred to as the Vinga Lighthouse Village. There are actually five lights (some of them no longer active) and one day mark in this photo. The main light is the stone lighthouse at the right of the photo next to the pyramid shaped old daymark. The red and white tower to the left of the pyramid is the old Vinga light without a lantern. To the left of the "control tower" (I'm not sure what this really is) is a black and white light which is the rear range light for the small white light in front of the red houses. The cone shaped white light in front of those is Viten Light.

Next is Buskars Knote light - the red one. I assume the white tower is probably the old light.

Gaveskar Light sits on a small rock island with the old keepers house. I was not able to identify the green and white light on the left of the picture:

Botto Light is on an even smaller rock island. The old light can be seen atop the keepers house and the new green and white light is seperate from the house. The light to the right is Vasskarsgrund:

Now on land, next is Morups Tange Light:

Unfortunatly, Kullen Light, the most powerful light in Scandinavia, was covered with scaffolding making it not very attractive. If you look closely you can see the first order clamshell lens in the lantern:

More photos will continue in the next post.

Next down the coast is Svinbaden Light:

Helsingborg Light is at the harbor entrance in the heart of Helsingborg, Sweden:

Haken Nedre Light sits at the southeast end of the Island of Ven - about 2.5 miles from the Swedish coast and about an equal distance from Denmark:

Back on the mainland, Malmo Light is near downtown Malmo:

Falsterbo Light is quite interesting. It was built in 1795 and to get to it you have to walk across several fairways of a golf course and hope you don't get hit by a golf ball:

To be continued in the next post.

Smygehuk Light looks alot like some of our US lights but the keepers house looks Scandinavian. It marks the southernmost tip of Sweden:

Ystad Light is in the center of Ystad, Sweden:

Finally, Sandhammaren Light:

I hope you enjoy this little bit of Sweden lighthouses.

Larry,

Thanks for the travelouge. It looks like we were in diferent parts of Sweden.

I actually never made it to Sweden- i just passed along it's coast for a bit on our way from Bergen, Norway to Copenahgen, Denmark last year on the cruise Esther and I took.

I think my favorite, most distinct light, is Helsingborg Light. If only HL were making 'foreign' lights still.

Great pics, Larry! Definately Helsingborg Light is the coolest.

Lighthouse Svenska Högarna in the outer Stockholm archipelago yesterday morning. We were hiding for some choppy weather on the Baltic Sea with wave heights up to two meters. The rocky islands provided us with some great shelter.

Lighthouse and pilot station Sandhamn in the outer Stockholm archipelago. This wooden tower, attached to a 1 1/2 story building, displays a directional sector light to guide ships through the narrow sound between two rocky islands.

Thanks for sharing! That sectional light looks like stained glass.
