Continued from NELL Hot Chocolate & You Day 1 Pt 2

http://www.lighthousekeepers.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=15;t=001145

We got to sleep a little bit later on sunday morning. We went to breakfast at the hotel again- not bad, but not the best breakfast buffet I've been to. Convenient and good, though.

We left the hotel and drove out to Provincetown for our trip to Race Point. We got there and just missed getting a ride out to the LH from one of the 5 volunteer 4-wheel drive vehicles.

This gave us a chance to talk to the gentleman in the parking lot about the lighthouse and other things- like where we were from, etc.

We took the 10 minute drive out. the road was pretty smooth until the last few hundred yards, though.

We were able to climb this light as well. We again had numerous volunteers here giving us all the info we wanted about the various buildings, etc at Race Point.

Here's a shot of the lighthouse by itself-

Here's some photos taken from inside the LH.

Taken through a porthole on the lower deck of the LH- a view of the Oil house.

Here's another of the Whistle House taken from a different porthole. you can also see to the left a wind generator that is in the process of being added to supplement the power from the solar batteries.

Here's a photo of the Keeper's House from the Lantern Room-

You can stay at Race point overnight- a minimum of 2 nights is reccomended by those in the know. There are three rooms in the Keeper's house, bathroom with shower, full kitchen and a parlor to relax in.

They are in the process of renovating the interior of the whistle house to add two more rooms along with another kitchen.

Here's a shot that Esther took of Judy (Castlebury) and me in front of the LH.

We spent about 1 1/2 to 2 hours out at Race Point. We left there and took a ride into Provincetown. We were hoping to climb the Pilgrim's monument but it was closed.

We drove down to the point where you can get distant views of Long Point and wood End LH's. We did walk a bit of a ways out on the breakwater but the weather wasn't the best so we didn't stay there too long.

Here's a long distance shot of Long Point-

Here's a long distance shot of Wood End LH-

I forgot to ask anybody exactly where the coast guard museum was and I couldn't get a signal on my cell phone so we went back to the hotel.

I spent the afternoon watching more football and Esther did a bit of exploring on her own.

We left for home in the rain on Monday morning. all in all another fine NELL Event.

Thanks for the report, Dennis. Looks like dreary weather, but that's the time when lighthouses meant the most to those who relied on them for navigation!

I can't take full credit for those- I got the idea from another person doing it first. I thought it was a great idea so I copied it.

John,

I agree with the above- although I would still have preferred it not to rain. laugh

Secondly- i don't agree that people should wait until the end to comment. It will make it harder for people to know what someone else is commenting on if it's done that way.

If a person comments in the part they are talking about you just have to scroll up- not backtrack to a previous page.

Just my view on it. Guess my view is moot since you already closed the threads. I'd prefer it if you undid that for the above reason.

Great photos. I had not thought of taking pictures though the portholes. It is a neat idea and the pictures are great. I'll have to try it next time we go lighthousing.

Actually, Dennis, I enjoyed being able to follow your threads - almost like a film - without the interruption of comments. Of course, I saw all three in a row tonight. I especially enjoyed the first thread because I love the Three Sisters lights; your shots of Chatham, Nauset, and Race Point were particularly good. smile Still using the Panasonic?

Dennis, I enjoyed meeting you and Esther (finally! smile ) last weekend.
Thanks for posting about the NELL event. Did you take any photos of Jim Walker in uniform at Race Point?

Thanks. It was nice talking with you as well- even if we don't agree on everything. laugh

I did not take any photos of jim in his uniform. i'll have to check Esther's photos and see if she did.

Dennis we really enjoyed your pictures as they brought back good memories of our Cape Cod lighthouse tour, with the U.S Lighthouse Society, 2 years ago.

The pictures through the portholes of Race Point
were very interesting adding that little extra.
We were only able to see Race Point from the water and look forward a return trip to see the lighthouse up close.

Lord knows I don't always agree with Dennis, but this is one time I do. I understand what Grace is saying but still agree with Dennis. Backtracking to see what someone was talking about is not, how to say it, user friendly. As they say you can't please everybody .... so I guess we'll just be bash for a while.

Nice job on the posting Dennis and you can see the contrast in the pictures from the actual day vs the pictures on the web site that I posted per requests from many members (due to the Xmas decorations).
