Spent the last week visiting the Outer Banks area and obviously visited the the associated lighthouses. Here are pictures taken from that trip. You will note the burned out pillings at Oak Island. The entire structure surrounding the lighthouse burnt to the ground last year or so. They expect to start construction of the new buildings soon. The only lighthouses that could be climbed at this time were Currituck and Bald Head. We hit Bald Head on Saturday; Currituck/Bodie/Hatteras on Monday; Ocracoke on Tuesday; Cape Lookout on Wednesday and Oak Island on Thursday. Lots of driving but well worth it.

It was a wonderful trip and TS Kyle didn't get in the way. We were done by Friday. wink

Thanks for sharing the pictures, Jim. Looks like you had pretty nice weather in spite of the approaching storm. You sure did get a lot of ground covered during the week!

Beautiful pictures. We are going to Virginia in a couple of weeks and maybe head south to banks for a quick look. I see there are some good things to look at. Thanks for showing the pictures.

Thanks for the pictures, Jim. You had some terrific shots of many of my personal favorites. I have been to Bald Head, but not the others. Your pictures have motivated me to make a stop (or two) on my way to Florida in November. Am I correct in assuming that the majority of the lighthouses are not open to the public at that time? Thanks again for sharing your adventure.

The only Outer Banks LH that is open to climb is Currituck. They are open thru November, I believe. Bodie you can go inside the tower and look up. I believe the volunteers are trying to keep it open as long as possible. Hatteras is closed to climb, and I presume the entire tower is closed until repairs are complete. Ocracoke is not open to climb at all. Cape Lookout tower is not open. Don't know how late in the year the boats run across to it. You have been to Baldy; if you have been there I would think you have been to Oak Island.

Each of these lights is in a beautiful setting and you should plan to visit whether or not you can climb them. Use the links in the Internet Index to determine the season and hours for each of the lights.

Be sure and get the ferry schedule if you are planning on going over to Ocracoke, especially if you go over rather late in the day, as the ferries don't run all day and night. Unless you plan on spending the night there, you better know what the last ferry off the island is.
The NC DOT provides all the ferry schedules.

Jim,
Thanks for the lovely pictures. I have always wanted to go to the Outer Banks, but unfortunately have not been able to so far. Hope to soon!

Just caught bits of a Weather Channel Atmospheres program the other day on the Outer Banks. Caught a glimspe of Cape Hatteras and a couple shots of Ocracoke, as well as an interview with one of the ferry captains.

While I was at the Oak Island Lighthouse one of the station attendants gave me a lightbulb from the light as a souvenir. I thought that you might be interested in a couple of pictures of my display of it. I took one with the dome on and one with the dome off.

Now that's a souvenir that most of us will never get. Thanks for the pictures.
