I've searched the forum for any previous entries on Nantucket and cannot turn up what I want, so I am posting this question. Is there anyone that has taken the Great Point Natural History Tour which includes a visit to Great Point lighthouse amongst what appears to be an interesting tour of that stretch of the island?

My wife and I are leaving in 15 days for Cape Cod area for a week, but only spending 1 day on Nantucket itself and really want to add this lighthouse to our growing list. This is our first visit to this area and have a wealth of info from previous visitors posted here and from the Links page, but any info would be great.

My husband & our boys made our first trip to Nantucket this past June. (We vacation every year at Cape Cod but had never gotten to the islands). I, too wanted to see all the Nantucket lights. But time didn't permit that. The ferry from Harwichport got us there later morning & we had to board to return at 4:30. Took a van tour of the island which took us out to Sankaty. We walked to Brandt Point. The Great Point trips are approximately three hours. I know our van guide/driver does one for sunsets/lighthouse.

Another trip & we'll get to Great Point. Be interested to see if anyone else has done the tours. Good luck!

Donna

I appreciate the info. Really looking forward to Nantucket; almost wish we were spending more than just the day, but since it's only a day trip, we wanted to take the high speed ferry from Hyannis early in the morning. We're hoping that will give us enough time. It's supposed to make the trip in an hour.

You all know that great point is a rebuilt light the original having been destroyed by the winds and tides and the new one has a built in solar panel but a great light it is in a hard place to get to.Bill O'Brien

Bill, as it turned out, too far remote for us to take a journey to. Overall, the Cape was a nice place to visit - 24 lights in 5 days but Great Point eluded us - save some long distance photos from the ferry.

We did know the current light is a rebuilt one, but several pictures that I've seen on the web looked stunning - hence my original post. Despite really wanting to venture out to it, once we got close on Nantucket (the wife and I), the decision was made to just see the sights (along with Brant Point and Sankaty of course). There is always a next time.... :-)

I've visited Great Point on several occasions. If you are going it alone, you must rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle for about $150 for the day, and the vehicle must have the proper beach permit. There is also a $20 per day charge to drive out there. Utilizing the services of a local tour would be far more inexpensive.

It is a wonderful experience though, and well worth the cost. The landscape is a true thing of beauty. The lighthouse is very well maintained and checked often by the USCG.
