My wife and I are going to the NASCAR race in Dover in a few weeks. I would like to see some lighthouses during our trip. Can anyone give me some information on the lighthouses in the area. Thanks. Dennis

Your closest light to the south of Dover would be Mispillion Light. Definately worth the stop (before this one is gone for good). It is in terrible shape, but very neat looking. Rt 113 south to Rt 36 east. About 25 miles away from Dover.

Closest to the north would be Reedy Island Rear Range Light. A tall skeletal light. The keepers house is in bad shape, but very interesting for photography purposes. It is about 25 miles north of Dover. Rt. 13 north to Walker's School Road east (a mile or so north of Smyrna) to Rt 9 north. It is about a 7 mile journey along Walker's School Road and Rt. 9 to the light. It is located in a small community called Taylor's Bridge.

Beyond that, you would have to travel further north into the Wilmington area. The remainder of lights are front and rear range lights that are somewhat hard to find. Mostly skeletal structures similar to Reedy Island Light. You may want to consider crossing into Maryland to visit some Chesapeake Bay lights on the east or north bank.

Have fun!
