I read almost all the posts in these forums and about half of them run off my screen. I have streched the window open as far as I can to no avail. there must be a simple answer but I do not have it.

thanks don

Hi Don -

2 solutions.

1. Set the resolution of your monitor to a higher number - such as 800x600 Pixels. You do this through the control panel for monitors. Your hardware and monitor must be capable of handling the higher resolution settings -- but most can do 800x600. Some can go much higher, but unless you've got a big screen monitor, the type may be too small to read.

2. People who post pictures can post them in smaller sizes.

It's usually the images which end up forcing people to scroll left and right. On the lowest resolution monitor, the width is 600 pixels and the height is 480.

Any image wider than 600 pixels will force the window to scroll left and right.

And if the image is saved at any higher setting than 72 ppi (pixels per inch also shown as dpi), your image may be much larger than you think.

For example, if you scan an image at 150 dpi and save it as 450 pixels wide, it will actually be 900 wide because the resolution on monitors is about half the 150 ppi you scanned.

Photo editing software will let you resize images and reset the resolution (ppi).

Saving an image for the internet at anything higher than 72 dpi does NOT improve the image and only takes longer to load the image in the browser window.

AFTER choosing 72 dpi, set the longest dimension of your image to about 300-350 pixels. Don't set the longest dimension until you set the dpi.

Also beware of long URLs while posting links. If the address is longer than the screen is wide, it will not wrap and will cause the same problem.

Solution: The poster can use the syntax:

[ URL=http://whatevertheheckthelongtroublesomeurlmightbe.html]Insert a short nickname here[/URL]

I have inserted a space between the opening square bracket and the "U" to prevent this from acually working this time. The poster must omit this space. When done correctly, only what appears above in blue will appear in the Forum, and since there are spaces between words, it will wrap correctly and prevent the problem.

If the person adding the URL does not do this or take some other preventive action during posting, there is nothing that the reader can do later on.

My initial postings contained a GIF in my signiture that was 700 pixels wide!! It caused the problems you mentioned. I have reduced my GIF to 300 pixels just to avoid what you stated!!! It sure makes life more bearable for all,, myself included!!!!
