Once you've created or accepted an Avatar from the available ones, post here and either tell us what your Avatar represents or why you chose it.

<-- My avatar, selected 8-2-02, is of the top of the Tinicum Rear Range Lighthouse in Paulsboro NJ. smile

This was the first stop on an all-day tour of the lighthouses of New Jersey which I operated prior to the 2001 Reunion. What a sight it was to come down the street and see the huge flag hanging from the lantern room!

If only you could see this image bigger, you'd see that Ron Foster is up on the walkway. Only his head shows above the flag.

Mine is of the Tarrytown Light. My home light. It is also the first light I ever visited and the first HL I purchased. I figured it was the most appropriate light to choose for my avatar since the light is what started my lighthouse obsession and HL collection.

Mine is one of the many purple coneflowers currently blooming at Chez Mombo. I grew these from seed a few years back (one success among many failures!) They are truly amazing plants with their sturdy stems and flower heads. This one has a bee on it but it's harder to see than Ron's head!

Mine are Ponce De Leon Inlet(thanks to John)and Coquille River. Ponce is the first Harbour Lights that My wife bought for me in late 1993. I worked on the elctronics in it during my 73-76 tour at CG Station Ponce De Leon in New Smyrna Beach. Coquille, while never having seen this lighthouse, has been my utimate favorite largely due to Harbour Lights and the allure of obtaining the LE through a large trade in 1997. I will be alternating between these two often

Mine is a pic of an unfinished draught Murphy's Stout. Always cool and refreshing even if only viewed instead of swallowed!

I selected a "spy" (remember the old Mad Magazine Spy vs Spy?) because I spent some 20 years as a member of the Navy / Navy Reserve cryptologic community. We are referred to as "spooks", so the spy just seemed to fit.

Now what can I say about my avatar. I think she has a look about her kind of like my outlook or life. I sort of sit back and take it all in then respond with a smile. laugh

John,

Small correction- your Avatar is in Paulsboro, NJ.

I chose mine (Sea Pines/ Hilton Head- unless my eyes fail me) because it's the first Harbour lights piece I purchased (in the infamous GLOW version).

I'll change it to Sandy Hook or Rose Island if you load them, but each for different reasons.

Voices. Ihe Founder from Los Angeles was staring at Case. "We monitor many frequencies. We listen always. Came a voice, out of the babel of tongues, speaking to us. It played us a mighty dub."

"Call 'em Winter Mute." said the other, making it two words.

Case felt the skin crawl on his arms.

"The Mute talked to us," the first Founder said. "The Mute said we are to help you."

"When was this?" Case asked.

"Thirty hours prior You dockin' Zion."

"You ever hear this voice before?"

"No," said the man from Los Angeles, "and we are uncertain of its meaning. If these are Final Days, we must expect false prophets .... "

'Avatar' is a Sanskrit word that means the incarnation of a god on earth.

I'm tempted to refer the average college grad to English 111 but, I simply cannot yet accept the co-opting of a great William Gibson novel by a bunch of snot-nosed post-modern critical theorists.

Not to put too fine a point on it.

ROFL!!

So instead, I'll refer the average college graduate to here . I don't read Dutch but the opening flash music kinda cranks.

--------------------------------------
Automatically, he picked it up.

"Yeah'?"

Faint harmonics. tiny inaudible voices rattling across some orbital link, and then a sound like wind.

"Hello, Case."

A fifty-lirasi coin fell from his hand, bounced, and rolled out of sight across Hilton carpeting.

"Wintermute, Case. It's time we talk."

It was a chip voice.

"Don't you want to talk, Case?"

He hung up.

On his way back to the lobby. his cigarettes forgotten, he had to walk the length of the ranked phones. Each rang in turn, but only once, as he passed.
------------------------------

Then again, there's this guy - kinda reminds me of Spinoza.

And so I shall post once again - and pick an avatar. I chose this picture because I don't have a clue how to pick one that's not part of the multiple choice set, and sunsets are calming and probably my favorite time of the day.

This sunrise at Marblehead was shot the weekend of April 6th. My wife wants me to post a shot taken later that morning so the Lighthouse isn't in silouette. So I may later, but I really like this shot. I'm only 31/2 hours from there so I'm making more and more trips. It is fast becoming my favorite spot to shoot.

Forgive me, I was just yapping about avatars generally - my messages have no bearing on the one I adopted for myself. The quotes are from a sci-fi novel entitled 'Neuromancer' by William Gibson - the fellow who coined the term 'cyberspace'. A most excellent read which I highly recommend. The move 'The Matrix' is *very* loosely based on Gibson's work both here and in other stories he wrote. The less successful movie 'Johnnie Mnemonic' was also based on a Gibson novel. All part of the cyberpunk genre. Check Neal Stephenson's 'Snow Crash' for another goodie.

Thinking about avatars takes one to the interstices of virtuality and the RW. As a slice of cyberspace, the collector's forums are bigger than any one of us and at the same time exist as a virtual community entirely in our thoughts. (Course - most such communities never manifest themselves in the real world, so we're an exception as occasionally we'll get together in Chicago or for a reunion or some such.) Anyway - if the CF is a virtual world which we are actively creating by our participation in it, then in a quasi-mythological sense we're all little 'god-like creators', and our avatars are our incarnations in that world.

In Neuromancer, Wintermute is solely a virtuality - an AI living in the matrix of data that represents BAMA - the Boston-Atlanta Metropolitan Axis. So just as our little forum pictures are representations in cyberspace of us in the real world, Wintermute's voice is a representation in the real world of him/her/it in cyberspace. A matter of perspective. The Matrix movie, while different from Neuromancer in many respects, also plays on this perspective thing - which are you - the person you seem to be in the world, or 'a brain in a vat'?

Looking at the avatars that have shown up thus far, I'm thinking of a bunch of talking lighthouses all chating at one another. Kinda like the children's show with the tugboats, but lighthouses.

Yep, avatars. :-)

Say goodnight Gracie.

Thanks to John Chidester, I now have my own avatar. It is Selkirk Light in Upstate NY. It is one of my favorites because it is beautiful and I actually spent the night there with Beaconfollower and my daughter. It was quite comfortable and very quiet until 4 AM when the salmon fisherman came to go fishing. Guess their momma's never told them to be considerate of others at 4 AM!! But Selkirk is a beautiful light.

I decided since I've figured out how to upload images I'd change my Avatar.

I chose Sandy Hook because it's my "home" Lighthouse.

I have not been able to volunteer this year, but I hope to next year.

Hello all what a great new look to the forums!!! This is awesome! Also Lainey has a new location!
The coal mine where Joe was working closed somewhat abruptly. Since we had always wanted to be back in Ky with his family he took a Job in Charlestown IN and we relocated! (almost in KY)We have been here almost 2 weeks (almost unpacked) It has been great we are still ironing out a few details school and such but it is working. We thought the mine closing was awful but it really has been a blessing!
Oh and I chose this avatar because it was pretty and I couldn't find an alcatraz pic laugh

Ours was easy to pick. Since we live just 12 miles from Michigan City Lighthouse it is only a natural choice. Also I (John) am a docent at the lighthouse so it has a special meaning to me.

I'm glad to finally get to post something here. Since there aren't too many Arkansas lighthouse avatars out there, I chose a lighthouse from my hometown. This one is Middle Bay Light in Mobile, AL (or in the bay anyway). I also have Sand Island, AL ready for when I'm in the mood for something different.

I picked the Grand Island East Channel Lighthouse located on Grand Island. Michigan. The lighthouse stands right near the water on the bay. When you see it for the first time it seems to say to you, "I've been here a long time and have weathered many a storm" It is truly a unique light. You can see this light by boat from the town of Munising, Michigan.
