Great News!!

The IBEW Local 531 (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) union based in La Porte, IN generously donated their time doing the installation for free. This means a great savings and will enable the Hoosier Lighthousing Club to help out the Old Michigan City Lighthouse with other projects.

Next year we will be adding more Christmas lights to the South wall (the ground was too wet to get the right equipment on the property to reach the three stories high wall) of the Lighthouse and the out buildings to finish up the project. Also, Bill Younger hopes to be at the lighting ceremony next year.

The Lighthouse people (Michigan City Historical Society volunteers) are thrilled and delighted with this gift from the Hoosier Lighthousing Club, HL collectors and the IBEW Local 531.

What a great start for our brand new club! The old Michigan City Light is at the edge of Washington Park, where there is a very large drive-though holiday light display. Lighting the light will make it a great part of the show and hopefully help it to become better known to the many visitors.

Too bad the weatherman doesn't have any snow in the forecast for this weekend, as that would be a great addition to the decorations.

Hat's off to the less-than-a-year-old Hoosier Lighthousing Club!!

You set a goal and you reached it. I'm certain the folks running the lighthouse are very happy with your contributions and that resulting publicity will bring more members to the club.

Way to go, guys and gals.

Also if anybody is interested in a little more driving the Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw is currently in Chicago at Navy Pier and will be open for tours over the weekend (chance to get the Mackinaw in the same picture with the lighthouse)

I wish I could be there for the lighting ceremony. Unfornately, family obligations preclude me from attending. My cousin picked today to be installed as the pastor of his new church in South St. Louis County. I am very pleased and proud that he has now been elavated to this level. And to think he used to shot peas across the dinner table at me.

I'll be looking forward to seeing the photos that I'm sure Paul will post.

What a great day to gather at Michigan City! Temps were probably in the low 60's (of course this could be considered a bummer - we were lighthing the Christmas lights and no snow.) A great crowd was on hand, with many club members making the trip. Many club members were able to attend as well as Michigan City Historical Society volunteers.

The lights look great, and Paul even went out to get a Christmas tree to place in the lantern room! Hopefully next year the rest of the lights will be in place.

As a club, we are off to a great start and the Old Lighthouse Museum folks are as excited as we are about being able to help!

I am sure Paul will be along sometime to post some pictures of our outing.

I changed the images to links to the images... to aid in the thread loading up quicker.....

Dave H and yours truly setting up the Christmas tree in the Lantern room...

June M. Jaques - Director of the Michigan City Historical Society
Chuck Edson - Business Manager of the IBEW Local 531
As Chuck helps June turn on the Christmas lights ..

Well-known lighthouse artist (Hoosier Lighthousing Club Art Director) and other club members observing the lighthouse after the lights being lit for the first time.

June, myself and Chuck after I presented them with Harbour Lights Old Michigan City Christmas Lighthouses on behalf of Bill Younger and Harbour Lights..
In the Harbour Lights bag were also lighthouses for the Union Hall, a fellow electrician named Dave (who with Chuck did the actual installation) and a lighthouse for the Mayor of Michigan City and one for the Mayor's office to have on display..

Thanks for the pictures Paul! I wish we could have gone, since I paid for many of those lights! (LOL) The lighthouse really looks great! Good job to everyone involved!

Thanks for sharing those moments with us Paul. I really like the picture with the light turned on. Anyone know where miniature lights can be purchased for the HL Christmas piece??

I was on my 3 hour drive back to Indy before the almost full moon made it's appearance in the sky, Bob. What I am really hoping for is a snowfall in Michigan City before the lights come down for the year... I may have to convince June and Chuck to leave them up and on if it is January before it happens. The 6 hour round trip would be worth getting the picture...

Paul, sure it would have been nice to have snow on Old Michigan City but in spite of not having the snow I thinks it's a beautiful picture. I like it so much I'm using it for my wallpaper on the computer for a Christmas scene. Thanks.

Looks Great. We're going to try to get over there to see it live. The challenge for next year is the Pier Light and the Walkway!

There are way too many elements to fight to do the Pier Light and walkway, besides we still have more to do at the Old Michigan City Lighthouse for next year.

Thanks for posting the picture! It looks great!
Is that a Christmas tree in the lantern room...or am I just seeing things?

Maybe there wasn't any snow but the lights sure looked great last Sunday afternoon. The club members who made it had a good time. This group of people just amazes me as to how quick things can be done if you can just find those special people to help. After seeing the park with its lights, it's a wonderful sight to see this GREAT LIGHTHOUSE lit up the way it is now for the holidays.

I got a call from June M. Jaques the director of the Michigan City Historical Society on Saturday... she said the Old Lighthouse with it's Christmas Lights is quite the talk of the whole community of Michigan City. She asked me to pass along her thanks to everyone who was involved in one way or the other with making it happen. She also stated that she wrote an article which was published in the local Michigan City paper giving the Hoosier Lighthousing Club, Harbour Lights, IBEW local 531 and Harbour lights collectors credit for getting the lights up and on at the lighthouse...

Thanks!!!

We will probably be in MC after Christmas. Just maybe we will get a little snow and then we can truly enjoy the lights. The lighthouse looks great as is (no snow), I know it will have to be terrific when the snow is added. Looking forward to doing more next year. Thanks, Paul, for shepherding this project along. Well worth the effort.
