NELL recently donated $900 to help Stonington Lighthouse Museum protect and save the 4th order Fresnel lens which is on display in the second floor of the Museum. When the New England Lighthouse Lovers Preservation Committee became aware of the need to encase the lens to protect it (or chance having to give it up) it was added to the list of possible recipients of NELL’s preservation funds.
On Dec. 9th, 2000 Fred Thumm, NELL Preservation Committee Co-chairperson, presented a check to Louise Pittaway, Stonington Lighthouse Museum Curator. Louise has ordered the custom made enclosure which NELL volunteers will pick up from the manufacturer in the Spring and install over the lens. This will protect the lens from damage and help to make it available for all visitors to enjoy.
It was through the efforts of the NELL membership raffles, silent auction, garment sales and your donations in order to obtain one of NELL’s “Bill Younger” buttons (signed by Bill) that this project was realized.
Louise Pittaway was very grateful to NELL for this donation and the fact that the volunteers from the club will deliver and install the enclosure.
I wish to extend that “thank you” to Harbour Lights, for supporting NELL, Bill Younger, for being our guest (and principal speaker) in June 2000 and for signing the Bill Buttons, and to all of you who have given us your support in various ways including your donations.
